Killer Instinct coming to Xbox One

Man, this is the 3rd F2P fighting game announced this month.

This is crazy.

In theory f2p should mean more people would play it. Full price retail could be hard to convince some people.

Anyway f2p Tekken and Doa5u are coming out this year. Will have to see what their polices are like.

It's pretty weird how many free to play fighters are coming out right now, right? I guess we'll have to see what they're like. I don't really like the idea of it because it seems like it's going to be 1.) more expensive in the long run and 2.) ruin character diversity. a lot of people aren't going to buy more than a couple characters I would think. There's going to be sooooo many Jago vs Jago matches on live.

hopefully there's some kind of "try a character out" option.

does anyone still want to get Xbox one - I think it had a pretty decent showing but that DRM stuff basically ruined everything but I honestly still want to get both consoles

Yup,

I think the F2P model is great for fighting games, but... doing that way would turn the game into 90% of Jago Vs Jago (and you would never meet less popular characters).
I wonder if it would be possible to have a random character for free, instead of the same for everybody. It would guarantee diversity online, and even help increase the sales of other characters.

I think F2P a model could work excellently with a fighter as long as every character can be purchased with an in game currency like LoL or every character's unlocked and you just pay for cosmetics like in DotA. Having only 1 character unlocked to begin with however gets things off to a terrible start.

This. Yes, F2P fighting game are a new thing, but seriously, how hard it is to watch at other successful F2P models? Did they felt KI needed to be the worst F2P ever? Hell, even the LotR MOBA has a better model.

Buying core elements for a fighting game, in this case the fighters, is a slippery slope, but it seems that's where we're at now. You "get" one free character and his opponent(s) you will have to purchase. So next KI installment, they'll give you the ability to move for free, all moves, including special moves and ultras you will have to buy (price to be determined)???
This is bad in my opinion. Really, really bad.

Nah, I think it's only natural for that genre. Back in the arcade, you were paying for each match, so you didn't want to invest into all characters, you only focus on your main and never play the others. It still kept being the same in console versions, most people have 2-3 favorites, and only play the others to unlock things.
Why pay the full package when you're only using 5% of it ?
Your example of selling moves separately wouldn't work, because playing a character means mastering his movelist. That's why even with free unlocks in regular games, you always start with a full movelist. That's the whole point of the game.

LOL LOOKED UP Double Helix because I had no idea who their where.

LOL MS ...................... just LOL !!!!! :O

Not only is KI one of the worst Rare franchises they could have brought back(for me personally) it also looked mediocre at best. I remember seeing KI in the arcade and while I didn't have much interest it did look great at the time.

Saw this post on SFK about Double Helix:

double helix is the result of a three-way merger between three video game developers....foundation 9, the collective, and shiny entertainment. i went digging for fighting game development experience, and found that pipeworks, a part of foundation 9, is responsible for Godzilla Unleashed, Godzilla: Save the Earth, Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, and Deadliest Warrior: The Game.

backbone entertainment, now a part of the collective/foundation9, is responsible for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo HD Remix (yes, David Sirlin). backbone/foundation9 are also responsible for porting Marvel vs Capcom 2 to XBLA and PSN, and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 to XBLA.

shiny entertainment had a fighting game in development dubbed Age of Elements that was cancelled in 2007. shiny entertainment was also sold by interplay entertainment, the company responsible for publishing Clay Fighters 1 (developed by Visual Concepts though), and developing Clay Fighters 2 and 63 1/3. i'm unsure if any of the shiny entertainment guys had anything to do with that series.

so that's.....
-Godzilla Unleashed
-Godzilla Save the Earth
-Godzilla Destroy All Monsters Melee
-Deadliest Warrior The Game
-HD Remix
-ports of MvC2 and UMK3
-Age of Elements (cancelled)
-possibly some Clay Fighters 2 and 63 1/3 involvement

that's all i found. never played the godzilla or deadliest warrior games, so i have no idea what those games are like.

Putting together some video impressions of the game. There's just too much to talk about and it's too late right now. I'll try to have it up as soon as possible.

Went in skeptical because of DH's history. Game is in pre-alpha and feels pretty goddamn amazing. Will report back with more soon.

Very cool. I still have some hope for a fun fighter :)

Interesting the plot thickens...

People look at F2P in such the wrong way.

If there's a "Buy all" option, the final option for getting the game ends up NO DIFFERENTLY than buying a $60 disk.

The only thing really changed here is the barrier of entry required to play the game.

The digital-only nature might be a good thing too. Much like Sony triumphed it's policies for "Disk Based Games" last night, XBO might have a separate structure for Download only.

You can bet they'll start the "new character free each ___"-style rotation, character sales, bundle packs, free updates to the base game, to keep new customers interested, and season-pass like future-content purchases as soon as they have everything laid out.

I'd love it if the open ended structure from F2P also ends up allowing for odd guest characters and stages to be added to the game. Every new XBO IP could have something added to the game as a free / budget promotion, to hype their new products.

And to the whole 1."LoL Double Helix", 2."Why Not Rare?!?" and 3."Farming out IP to odd publishers!" commentary:

1. Everyone starts somewhere. And any developer can do good, with the right people and talent added for the job.

2. I've never known Rare to be a fighter dev. And when they did make KI, it was at a very different time in the industry. Hearing of them making it, or an outside dev with varied assistance, really gives me the same sense of "Could turn out either way!", really.

3. At least it keeps the IP alive. I'd love to see Capcom, or Konami farm out some of their unused classic IP to other dev houses. Even if only 1 out of every 3 ended up fantastic, it'd still be more activity on the brands, than what we have now.

It'd a bit odd, but this is one of my favorite announcements of E3 Day 0. There are a lot of cool looking games for genres I don't care for as much getting announced, but this is the first *mostly* original Fighter announced for this next gen, and will probably be out for a long while before Guilty Gear Xrd can even be considered. That's at least enough to motivate me towards keeping an eye on this.

Rocket Knight wasn't enough for ya?

Rocket Knight wasn't enough for ya?

Not at all. Hey, you forgot Rush 'n Attack & Vandal Hearts! And then we got to the epic Hard Corps. Uprising!

It's better to let such IP's exist, be worked on by different developers, and at least get some steps towards having HD-level assets and pieces for the future. We have SO many ways to produce and publish games now-a-days; There's so much more space to respect the classic games of old with new releases, between "Cellphone card game" and "Triple A Blockbuster".

And this is why every Rare fan is concerned...read from bottom to top:

I feel much better now after reading about how Double Helix is pretty stacked with fighter background and seeing it in action but as a huge Rare fan it still leaves a rock in my gut.

Wait, what? Other than FilthyRich, who's working on the game?

One the gamespot live demo they said a new team was assembled for this game made up of people who had worked on Skullgirls, SSF2, SF2T and Weaponlord.

So, in other words, not really Double Helix at all.

Huh. Interesting. I'll wait and see who before jumping to any conclusions... I would think that anyone notable who worked on Skullgirls is still working on Skullgirls. Weaponlord is a piece of shit. ST does make me raise an eyebrow, though.

Yeah, it will be interesting to see how this turns out as I expect making a good fighting game is a very difficult proposition. You don't really see anyone trying to break their way into the established order of fighting game franchises.

That's why I think MS bring back KI is a really risky move. If it does not end up being up to standard they have wasted money on this game and killed of any potential future earnings from the franchise.

Edit: huh, Weaponlord's history sort of ties into KI.

As the former journalist settled into his new life at Capcom, Goddard was already planning his next move. By 1993, he was becoming frustrated with Capcom's direction for the future of Street Fighter. The 25-year-old developer was ready to try his hand at game design. And Ken Lobb was going to make that happen. Lobb, an employee at Namco, was working on an unannounced project (codenamed "Melee") and encouraged Goddard to join the team. Little did Goddard know that this was because Lobb was planning his own move, and when Goddard made the jump, so did Lobb. Melee ended up in Goddard's hands, while Lobb joined Nintendo to develop a little game called Killer Instinct.

If DIMPS could do justice to the juggernaut of a franchise that is Street MOTERFUCKING FIGHTER i think this team at DH can pull something like Killer Instinct

I find myself amazed in just two days how disapointing this E3 has been for me on a personal level, but then the hits just keep on coming in.

It looks like I'm gonna have a LOT OF TIME to catch up on everything I missed from the last gen.
