Also, my first post! I signed up just for this thread... though i've been lurking around since MGS4 and that EPIC official thread. (BruceLeeRoy is a beast.) Very excited for this game, cannot wait!

P.S. I also joined to ask Rapping Granny about his avatar... who is the chick in the orange hair... dammit that avatar has me hypnotized :lol
I think Rapping Granny is banned, but the chick in his avatar is from this video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wM-Mk26N6wQ About 1:20 in you'll see where he got it. Oh, and welcome. ;)

The official PS boards have a thread called "The return of: Ask the dev"... where you can ask questions to Seb Downie, QA Manager at GG. A few days back, I logged on to that thread at around 3.30 at night after coming home from a night of partying... and found people asking all sorts of ridiculous questions... some of them even outright trying to downplay the game. Questions like... Why are the face animations so bad in the beta... Why cant we play as 4 different people like in KZ1... etc etc... and in a fit of pique, I posted this on that thread. Also, I wanted to thank Seb for doing pretty much a thankless job... so that found its way in there too.

Agree, or disagree? And if disagree, why?

Seb,

I have no questions. I only wanted to let you know that for every person who writes on this thread, there are 5 others who dont, but still are very interested in this game and keep up with the news and information. I have read almost every impression about this game, and have been absolutely amazed at what people have said. I have seen people who were absolute haters of this game turn into blabbering disciples after playing the beta. I have seen people on Neogaf love this game after hating on it for a couple of years. If you can turn the people who were invested in the failure of this game into fans, I have no doubt that this game will amaze people like me... people who want to see the PS3 do well, and especially people who have faith in GG and want Killzone 2 to be everything we want it to be.

Just a heads up... never think that you are catering to a vocal minority... trust me, there is a silent majority of gamers who try to keep up with Killzone 2 information, and are very interested in the success of your game. On the behalf of those gamers, I would also like to thank you for taking the time from your busy schedule to answer all these questions... Even though this is my first comment on the Killzone forum, rest assured that I have read almost every page of this particular thread with great interest, and have been very impressed with how GG has kept its core audience in the loop and made them feel a part of the process (and even going so far as to have a checkpoint named Wollan's view... That is just sick, its amazing how you would reward a big fan of yours, major props.)

Keep it up, we are rooting for you. And keep answering these questions, you are doing a major service to the community and I have no doubt GG will be amply rewarded come February.

Once again... Thanks a ton for a job very well done.

iamcool388.

Edit: Thanks Fps Fanatic... oh man, I remember that song... memories of high school days!

That did it :D. I was really just trying to figure out where I recognized the kid from. I never actually watched the Willy Wonka remake. Turns out he was in Finding Neverland. Great film.

Just read that 1up preview. The the cover system is just a gimmick now?

I watched a video out of the recent batch that came out where the guy playing literally didn't use the cover system at all, and his screen was often drenched in his own blood. I imagine if they do seriously build the single-player around the use of cover, which it seems they are, then you'll have to use it to survive. I wish Tina had elaborated on what she meant by "gimmick".

Good good times.

First impressions

IGN:
http://ps3.ign.com/articles/803/803129p1.html
The opening was once again fantastic, but we couldn't help but sit there and think, "When are we finally going to see some in-game footage?" The only thing was that we had been looking at in-game footage. As soon as our soldier hits the ground and his gun comes into view, very much like what we saw with the opening to Resistance, we couldn't help but think, "Holy hell, all of that was in-game?"

Indeed, it's quickly apparent that Guerilla has come much closer to the original trailer than most anyone thought possible. It's not 100% identical to be sure, but there are times (quite often) when it's really, really damn close.

Joystick
Clouds dash by as a flying vehicle zooms ahead. Armored soldiers are yelling frantically, as the chaotic sounds of a war zone fill the jam-packed auditorium. Sound familiar? It's meant to be. The opening seconds of the new Killzone presentation bring to life the infamous E3 trailer from 2005-only this time, it's in real-time.

Certainly, the question on everyone's mind is: does it look as good as the notorious it's-not-CG-we-swear trailer from 2005? In many ways, the visual fidelity of the updated presentation matches the highly polished look of the debut trailer. Beautiful volumetric smoke filled the screen, and the characters were alive with animation. However, unlike the deceptive E3 presentation of yore, this one had an aura of believability. A critical eye could note a few rough jagged edges, and textures that are a far cry away from Hollywood renders. The floor textures were no short of terrible. The facial animation system in Were we a little disappointed to notice polygons and texture work so quickly? Certainly. In spite of all the flaws within the game, there's no denying that Killzone 2 provides a visual feast that effectively demonstrates the technical prowess of the PlayStation 3.

The presentation continues with a Helghast that gets burned alive, much to the delight of this blogger. Although the fire didn't look particularly "next-gen," the way it interacted with the flailing body was intensely lifelike. Action connoisseurs would certainly be impressed by the first few non-interactive moments of the presentation, with innumerable explosions that would make Michael Bay jealous.

As the airship landed, we were delighted to see the presentation transition to gameplay seamlessly. The onscreen player moves down a passage, with rows of barricades, and dozens of soldiers being torn apart by Helghast fire. Even if the finer details of the game's visuals couldn't live up to the expectations created by the original E3 trailer, the actual gameplay maintained much of the same intensity. The senses become easily overwhelmed by an apocalyptic feast of aural and visual information: comrades fall, in battle, under a hailstorm of bullets and explosions. The director of the game noted Guerilla's team to create a "hostile theatre of war." They've undeniably succeeded in that.

1up:
What we like: The presentation and attention to detail are key. The game doesn't look as good as the 2005 trailer, naturally...but it looks about as good as any other console shooter. We'd say that Gears of War tops it, and a few other titles are on the same visual level, but the game looks extremely nice.

What we dislike: We didn't see much big-picture stuff in here we haven't seen yet in other games. Given Killzone 2's importance and Sony's hints at online features, this likely has more to do with Sony being very secretive about the features, and less about a lack of innovation in the game. At this point it's hard to pick out one or two big things that will help separate the gameplay from what we've seen in other war shooters.

Based on what we've seen, Killzone 2 seems poised to live up to the lofty promise of its debut on the PS3. The gameplay looks solid and immersive, with some very cool bits of polish in the form of animation, physics, and interactivity that enhanced the familiar first-person action in some interesting ways. The visuals are extremely impressive and rank among the best we've seen on the hardware to date. Aside from the obligatory high-poly models and vast environments, which we frankly expect out of a PlayStation 3 game, Killzone 2's lighting and particle systems are looking great.

Just to nit-pick... when there is no blur... the textures ect... don't actually look that good.

The post-effects are really what makes this game shine. So in my opinion there are certainly parts of this game that don't look that good... and things that Gears of War does better.

Overall though this is the best looking game on next gen I have seen. But not as far and away as I originally thought.

People + Lighting + Post Effects = OMG
Environmental Textures = Okay

it amaze me that this reveal thread has more posts than the official Gear of War 2 thread, i cant imagine how many posts the official thread for this game will get, will it give the Halo 3 thread a run for its money come Feb?

Just goes to show the quality of the writing at 1UP vs elsewhere when they can't get a single thought out without comparing it to Gears, or then nitpicking at insubstantial nonsense when there are other interesting things to talk about.

Nothing has changed.

If the game turns out bad and reviewers give low scores, the official thread will be at least twice as long as the halo 3 thread easily (see the MGS power button thing), if the game delivers in all fronts it will be a very popular thread.

But it wont :) unless somehow the game makes a complete 180 between now and release date.

Hmm, Halo 3 is also in that episode, Shoe has the dog on his lap (real dog, not speaking figuratively). Starts at 13:20

Edit: wow this is where he calls Halo 3 Subtle Beauty. This is where History begins.

23:53 is where the KZ2 talk started, and the first "what" moment of 1up's KZ2 previews. First being the gears of war thing, but it wasn't so big since it's a pretty game as well.

Cover will be essential on the harder difficulties but the preview builds are locked at normal. Also depends on the weapon. Running and gunning with the shotgun or LMG is pretty easy.

To do so it'll have to have legs. The reason the Halo 3 thread is as large as it is is because Bungie's involvement with it and to a greater extent the effort they commit to updating the player experience with weekly updates, MP playlists, and DLC.

I'd love to see Killzone 2 get that kind of treatment but it's certainly a hard thing to do.

Let's dance like it's 2007!

Damn, it's weird to think how long it's been. May 2005 for the original target render, then it was two years (TWO years!!!) until the first realtime reveal in July 2007, which even that now feels like ages ago.

Halo 3 is as it is now because there was Halo and Halo 2.

The Killzone franchise still needs work.

I never noticed that the arm clips through his own torso in the above infamous KZ2 dancing video.

This brings up a question I've always had about the 2005 Target Render when I finally started watching that thing with a discerning eye (which was a month ago?): Did anybody notice that the group of soldiers pops into the scene after the first guy who goes "WE GOT INCOMING ANTI-AIR! HOLD ON TIGHT!!"?

.... visually, its the best looking game to date on any platform including anything on current high end PC's right now. When KZ2 comes out..it will indeed be the most graphically impressive game on any platform to date... Crysis can take a back seat now... seriously, i just got back from playing the beta again and i played the shit out of Crysis on my high end rig since it came out.. KZ2 simply looks better then Crysis overall.... and if anyone tries to say otherwise... i sure hope you played both yourself like i have now..

I just dont get how fanboys are willing to push aside such great games that happen to come out on a different platform simply because they are a stubborn, egotistic fanboy of a particular system and refuse to give another platform a chance..... its better you then me..thats for sure. :)

PS3 is a year behind 360 so we are just now seeing the better half of what the PS3 can produce... dont get me wrong, im still a HUGE fan of the 360 system, i still feel its the best system out this generation..i would give up my PS3 before i would my 360...for sure but i really feel the PS3 is still a system every gamer NEEDS to own... its coming into its own finally. Look at some of the games coming out in 2009 for the PS3... in 2009 there will defiantly be enough AAA exclusive PS3 games to warrant the price of the system... and with a PS3 price drop in 2009, there would be no excuse for passing up on the system at that point..

The extremely negative reaction that pic received was rather hilarious when you consider that the part of the trailer that it was capped from turned out to be one of the most impressive scenes from the trailer.

The bad guys are like one of the most iconic bad guys. You know, when they're coming through the environment you can see their eyes through the dark. It works really, really well. (paraphrase)

And the recent preview says the helgast are a bad thing for the game.

Sweet mother of God that is creepy!!

I think what Killzone has on other games among other things is a subtle suggestion that this could actually happen in real life. The physics are right, the weapons are possible, the animations are real, the enemy is human... Halo, Resistance, GoW and others are so far removed from reality that they are just games. Whereas COD and Rainbow Six are actually set in today's world.

No wonder I had nightmare about Killzone after playing the beta. I will try to refind my post, but its earlier in this thread... It just screams possible and real, whereas other games are just games.

I'm not sure how you can compare the two considering Crysis does what it does in a much, much larger environment.

Eh, even as successful as CE and 2 were, the die-hard Halo 3 community (like those in the Halo 3 Thread) would have abandoned it long ago had it not been for Bungie's community tools and involvement. I think you'll see the opposite with Gears if Epic doesn't get their act together (the thread here is already being abandoned) despite how successful the first game was and how much the second has sold.

As much as Killzone 1 was a mediocre launch of a franchise, it really feels like the sequel is like a whole new game and the proper launch of a franchise that could really go somewhere. It's really in the developers and Sony's hands right now to see if this becomes a blockbuster franchise like Halo.
