I could make a single bitmap image of a 100 megabyte texture of tree bark and wrap it around a square box.

This would probably look super realistic except for the fact that geometry detail is missing. It would still be a box just a nicely textured box.

WTF do you know about texture resolution of Killzone 2 compared to Gears. Killzone 2 MP has fucking great textures.

GOW2 doesn't look better than Killzone 2,i don't know about the textures but from what i have see as of now is not that way,and when the topic is lighting animation Killzone 2 is just in a different league.

Having played Gears 2 SP and the KZ2 beta, Gears 2 doesn't have fucking awesome magical brilliant textures, it's just a case of a very cohesive art direction, the texture resolution in Gears 2 was far from mind-blowing, Killzone 2 textures might be slightly better, neither reaches the UNCHARTED!!!111!!!

Technically the Killzone 2 engine running MP is simply pulling off more than Gears 2 single player, that's all.

Im gonna be killed right now, BUT i think that Gears 2 have higher resolution texture....
The draw distance is shorter tough, and the lighting in K2 is beyond of anything else.
You would be surprised how much a low res texture can look with a couple of shaders and post effects :D

K2 has the best art direction (And tech to give live that art vision) i ever saw.
Anyway , its a K2 thread !!!! Dont talk about Gears2 or R2 !!! :P

A texture doesnt need to be high resolution to look good, detail mapping ,HDR and bum mapping can do the trick too.
Uncharted has the best HDR ever !!!111! Sorry Halo 3 you tried but Uncharted taked the price.

Have you played Gears 2? Because it doesn't have higher res textures.

Maybe because they're programming in a very smart-like manner.
No point in using all SPU's if it's not optimized. You'd probably get worse performance than if you had programmed carefully in the 1st place.

Or it could be that a year ago, that they were only using 4 SPU's at the time.

They probably had to lock down the tech for the game at some point, it's not like they can keep making changes to the engine during the entire development cycle.
 
Maybe other spare SPUs are for audio, I don't see any part on PDF or it might be referred as 'game' in the list.

Also 4 + PPE might easy to tweak-able for future games.
 
About the SPU's: because it's already difficult to use all of them, since it requires a VERY high level of knowledge in the Cell processor technology; and it is even MORE difficult to put all of them to work in order, to separate processes and other stuff among these 8 'cores', which are very distinct 'cores' and are made to run some kinds of processes specifically. So if you need to run something different than what they're made for, you need to recompile the code and optimize it to hell until it runs well on it.

Yeah it's a friggin difficult thing.
 
I assume that theyre optimizing the hell of it. or as iceatcs says Audio processing.
And having other SPU doing a half assed job is no good at all.
Or they maybe use it only for streaming and such.
Remember guys CELL have 8 SPUs 1 disabled and 1 reserved for the OS (Every game runs in a 'sandbox').

Well i was watching a couple of K2 videos, yeah im pretty much amazed by how smooth things run and how much stuff there is in screen. (Best dust and smoke ever)

Ok,but the 'blurryness' :D is not the texture 'fault' .
Rest assured that i can make a huge 1024x1024 texture look blurry.
You can make a texture look sharp with detail mapping or HDR. (Or other ways)

I think 'Blurryness' you got confused, it is not visual blur I think you mean aka low resolution in-game on upscaling to high resolution screen.

But Anisotropic Filtering also comes into play here.

Sometimes it seems like parallax mapping. Especially when the gunfire hits the ground.
I dont think it is though...it sure looks like it though.

That's what I mean, I have no idea what it is, but it's quite good. The result is pretty convincing. I'm making a gif of this moment right now.


The only game I saw using this in a good manner until now is Crysis.
