Killzone Shadow Fall Review Thread

Alright, I'm about to go through the reviews, reading up on some summaries it seems to be most have a problem with the SP? If the MP is still great as has no problems my hype is still full speed ahead.

Welp. This launch is looking less and less appealing.
I thought K2 and K3 were generally universally acclaimed?
How'd they regress?

what? no lol, they have their fans, and they arent bad games, but they are often mixed with reception, they're most known for their graphics, not the gameplay

Sounds like it's a fairly lengthy single player campaign with at least a handful of really strong levels. And the graphics are gorgeous.

Hmmm...to buy or not to buy.

Greatness Waits.

It doesn't look like we have our killer app at launch. Infamous look promising though. I hope they make a bundle or something.

Is it just me or is very little said about the multiplayer in these reviews? And while I was looking forward to the campaign that was only a more recent thing once they released the videos of different ways to progress through a level and all that.

Prediction dead rising will get a high score. And I bet the reviews will state that gameplay trumps resolution and performance. Even though the game plays just like the last two dead risings.

Off-topic, but since I loved the 2 Dead Rising games, I'd be totally satisfied with the 3rd one playing just the same! This is what I'd personally be looking for in the reviews for that game: "If you're a fan of the Dead Rising series, you'll love this entry" - regardless of the review scores.

Kinda hard to review multiplayer for a game with not many people playing atm...honestly I have no idea how BF4 was reviewed

Jeez, make up your mind, journos.

On a side note: COD really broke the FPS genre.

I love this post. Pretty much sums up how i've been feeling the last few years regarding the FPS genre.

I Agree 100%

Sounds like a great Killzone game! It's not everyone's favourite shooter franchise but it's always been the most cinematic with big effects and a lot of horsepower. This one look no different. Can't wait!

Is anyone surprised by the reviews? SF is all looks and no brain.

I'll still always remember the awesome KZ2 MP matches, though.

This. What was everyone expecting? The Killzone campaigns have always been average at best, why was was anyone expecting this to be a 9-10 single player experience?

I already have the game, so I'll make up my own mind when I play it tomorrow night. I don't trust big name reviewers anymore. They're either fanboys on one side or another, or they're being moneyhatted by publishers. Someone like say Angry Joe and other smaller reviewers not only seem to give you more honest opinions, they actually seem to go into more detail about the pros and cons of the title. I see no reason to trust a site that blasts a game for not innovating (which seems to be a contradiction from the videos we've seen) and then goes on to praise the latest CoD rehash.

Gaming journalism...heh.

No, they have never been universally acclaimed. They've always reviewed "above average" just like Shadowfall has been. And I have enjoyed every single one of them (and I assume Shadowfall)

Disappointed in the scores was hoping this would be a great first game for my ps4. I got the bundle so I guess I'm getting it either way.

Honestly it seems like reviewers are just tired of first person shooters in general. Especially when none of the 3 FPS games available particularly do anything new.

Well, Gies loved Bioshock Infinite (10/10) while its mechanics and gameplay were largely identical to the original bioshock (in my opinion). He railed on KZ SF for being too much of the same. I think he likely didn't like the story, pacing, etc. and listed familiar mechanics to have substance for the negatives.

I can't help but get the sense that Killzone gets to suffer for the fatigue of the entire genre simply because it's an 'also ran' next to the 'kings'. Seriously reviews citing a 'lack of evolution'? Are they serious? Did they even play it?

Didn't he also sable down CoD, but gave it a higher score than KZ Shadowfall?

This game is sitting 7 points lower on Metacritic than Perfect Dark Zero.

I have no idea how to feel about that. I feel kind of embarrassed for Guerilla, I guess.

I'll be very interested to see what Battlefield's scores are on the PS4, as it will no doubt have a worse single player and worse graphics. Multiplayer will probably be better, but KZ4's looks like it's actually pretty good.

People are more willing to give lower numbers these days. 5 used to be a game that was broken in many ways.

I guess I'll find out when I play it. I thought PD Zero looked very unimpressive (particularly visually) when it was released, and I was a big fan of the original PD. This looks awesome on the surface to me, but I am a bit surprised at the reviews. This seemed like the only big title that looked a lock to be highly acclaimed. I don't think any big game will be universally aclaimed for either system now.

Gies should stop writing Playstation reviews. He's just too biased and it is plain to see.

Last of Us - 7.5

Killzone - 5.0

What's next Arthur? Will you be reviewing inFamous: Second Son? We will all be looking forward to your click bait on that one.

I feel like PDZ is one of the reasons for these low scores. PDZ got great reviews at launch and now it's hard to find anyone who even remembers it. Reviewers don't want to PDZ again, and launch titles for both consoles are gonna bear the brunt in my opinion.

So I guess Shadow Fall is the worse in the Killzone series according to Metacritic. Damn I was hoping Guerilla turned the serries around, from early videos it seemed to look like they changed a lot, like more open ended levels in campaign, more personal and focused story, fast fluid 60FPS multiplayer. But it turns out all that is worse according to Metacritic, I wonder if the open ended levels hurt the campaign more if it got worse scores than the PS3 Killzone's, or the 60FPS Multiplayer isn't as expansive as Killzone 3 which had jetpacks or Killzone 2 which had a higher player count.

Last of us was Philip Kolar.

Granted I haven't played the game but I felt GG made a huge number of improvements to the game compared with the previous games. This is why the lowered review scores don't make sense to me.

This is a franchise which has received a lot of flak for being linear, for having no colours, for being a corridor shooter, for having laggy controls etc.

Heh.

Perfect Dark Zero is an affront to good gaming sensibilities. Fuck everything about that overrated piece of launch shit.

81 Metacritic my fuckin' balls, PDZ was shit. I'm sure KZ has to be better.

I can't imagine this game being worse than Killzone 3. And that was a pretty decent game allready. But i would give it a 7-ish.

This smacks of bullshit.

What I read into a lot of this is that Dice et. al can develop MP-centric shooters with consistently awful campaigns and more or less get a free pass on them because the general community/media is aware that MP is the main - and best - attraction; if GG do the same, then stiff biscuits, guys.

I just feel that reviewers are harping on about and letting the SP colour their overall impressions a little too much for what the game is.

So if a KZ game sticks with the normal formula, it's more of the same gray, boring shooter...If KZ tries to reinvent itself, reviewers somehow start missing things from the old games that they didn't like.

Either way, I know better than to let reviewers decide a game for me. Otherwise, I would have missed out on a lot of good MP games this gen.

After I watched the KZSF reveal, I was sold. The game looked so awesome. But the thing is, I'm very, very picky when it comes to FPS:s. So many games the last years that I've bought and not finished because they weren't good enough for me.

With that said.

I just did it.

Just because they made a change doesn't mean they succeeded at that new thing. Personally I kept that in mind to keep hype levels in check.

Making changes and adding new features is not a matter of checking some boxes. It has to be done well to make a positive difference.

I had absolutely no problem with KZ2's campaign. (OK, that's a lie... I had a couple of problems with it... but I mean on balance I loved it.) It was linear, but it wasn't a shooting gallery like CoD. It was difficult. It required tactics. It had an amazing atmosphere and still impressive visuals. I even liked the arc of the story, no thanks to Rico.

I am glad they took a chance to take KZ elsewhere. More developers should do that. However it looks like it did not pay off. Perhaps KZ2 was a one-time result.

Ballsy move. Good that you are making decision though. :D

Nice, congrats. I buy my $400 consoles only for the first day's lineup, too!

I think of it from the standpoint that BF's MP is SO good, it offsets the horrid campaigns those games always have. Killzone's is clearly not up to that standard, and I honestly don't think that is a debatable point. It's not enough to offset what appears to be a very substandard campaign, at the very least.

Allow me to review Killzone.. Not just Shadow Fall but any Killzone game

Pros - A graphics tour de force - Rock solid frame-rate and good multiplayer - Some Good campaign moments.

Cons - The story campaign is basically pretty average and nothing you will remember.

Why buy it? Multiplayer. It will keep you busy until games like Destiny and Infamous Second Son come out. It will also impress your friends with the amazing graphics.
