Realistic single-player RPG set in the medieval Europe. Open-world sandbox with period accurate melee combat. Dungeons & no Dragons.

A first-person, open world, realistic RPG that will take you to Medieval Europe in a time of great upheaval and strife. A humble, young blacksmith loses everything to war. As he tries to fulfill the dying wish of his father, Fate drags him into the thick of a conspiracy to save a kidnapped king and stop a bloody conflict. You will wander the world, fighting as a knight, lurking in the shadows as a rogue, or using the bard’s charm to persuade people to your cause. You will dive deep into a sweeping, epic, nonlinear story from Daniel Vávra, an award-winning designer from the Mafia series. Our unique, first-person combat system lets you wield sword or bow in both one-on-one skirmishes and large-scale battles. All of this - and more - brought to life beautifully with next-gen visuals delivered via CryEngine 3.

Great blog post you should read if you love RPGs:

Looks great. Like a open world Mount & Blade. Interesting that the decided not to put Dragons and magic into this game. Anyways good to see the KS is already doing great.

I didn't expect much when clicking the kickstarter link but it actually has something to show already. Looks interesting.

Is 300,000 really enough for all those 3d medieval assets though? Sounds like there's a lot of content to be made

I saw the teaser a while ago, and while the music was crap it looked really good. What I didnt realize is the crazy amount of talent on it, lots of Mafia and ArmA people, so you the sandbox nature of it will probably be crazy.

RPS interview.
The first chapter still has nine square kilometers [of map size] and 30 hours of gameplay, so it’s not a small game. We will lower the price accordingly, though. It’s not going to be $60 per episode, but rather $35 or something. That’s our plan.

Eh.

Apparently there is a lot of work already done plus they are counting on some private investor who's on board if the Kickstarter meets the goal.

You know, like it was for Star Citizen at first.

read a bit ? :p

Why Kickstarter ?

After seeing our trailer, you might ask: “why are we here? This is a big, expensive game that’s sure to cost a lot of money, right? Does no major publisher want it? This sounds suspicious.” The answer to those questions might surprise you.

Warhorse is a comparatively small studio. We now have about thirty people, and it took us more than eighteen months to develop what you've just seen. All this time, we’ve been funded by a private investor, to the tune of almost 1.5 million dollars in total. We hope the product you’ve seen reflects that.

Our plan was to develop a prototype, pitch it to publishers, and finish development with the subsequent money. We tried to do it that way (and you can read about our experiences on our blog), but in essence, even though everybody we met commended our work, praised our game’s visuals, and believed in our ability to deliver, negotiations would inevitably hit a dead end at the point where the publishers' marketing departments got involved. Why?

"Your game is too niche. There’s no magic. People want wizards and dragons."

We beg to differ. The response from players has always been great. We think gamers like history – look at the success of Total War, Assassin's Creed, Mount and Blade, and Red Dead Redemption. There is no medieval first-person RPG out there, but it does not necessarily follow that nobody wants one - only that there is no easy box for marketing to pigeonhole it in.

Our investor is strong and capable of funding the complete development of our project. But he does not follow the game industry very closely, and needs proof that publishers and marketers are wrong about our game - that you are indeed interested in a mature, medieval RPG that emphasizes freedom and authenticity. And so we stand, as a studio, at a crossroads. Either those naysayers are right, and there truly is no desire for the game we are making, or we are right. Either way, we think Kickstarter is a great way to find out.

The sum we are asking for is about ten percent of our total budget; for our investor, however, it is proof that there is real demand for the game, and that there is a point to keeping it funded. Every extra dollar will allow us to make the final product that much better because it means more money for development and more support from our investor.

Should our Kickstarter campaign fail, it will mean that we were wrong, that there is no interest to play a game with the atmosphere of Braveheart, and that we will have to start considering working on some mobile MMO, because that's where the money is these days (or so everybody tells us). We are, however, positive that our instincts are right.
So help us to make our vision a reality. Help us to make not the 176th free-to-play mobile RPG MMO Elven village-builder with DIAMONDS™, but to make the kind of unique, engaging experience we think you’d like to play

fucking publishers ...

If you pledge for Baron tier and above, you will be free to choose any platform the game will be released on as your reward.

So £25 for the PS4 version plus the early alpha on PC in six months.
My PC is not exactly top of the line, so that's a pretty sweet deal. Backed it.

Those jifs look wonderful Dennis.

Also I'm not sure it's intentional, but to me your avatars always share a resemblance with those face rendering tech demo's that GPU companies like to make. Must be the lighting.

"One investment banker from London told us in no uncertain terms that PC and consoles are dead, and if we're not making a free-to-play MMO for iPad, we've got no chance. This is, of course, rubbish, but being right is little help to us."

:P

You know, like it was for Star Citizen at first.
Makes sense, a full game like this on that budget would scream scam, but partially developed with other investors, with us basically acting as a collective of pseudo-investors is another matter.

Don't plan to pitch in, but definitely keeping an eye on this.

Good job with the OP, Dennis!

I really hope this game makes it, I couldn't believe what Vavra and his team pulled through with Mafia when that released. I have faith that they can pull of a similar achievement again, hopefully starting with this game.

Backed.

Tempting, but I don't fancy paying now and waiting close to 2 years for a finished act 1. I'll see how it's received when it's out.

Oh hell yes I've been waiting for this kickstarter to start. Let's make it happen! Also let's make them change their
terrible, terrible name
!

But it is a reference to the Lords Prayer (Our Father, Vaterunser, etc...).

I kind of think it fits well :)

This game looks ambitious, but they seem like having a hard time getting to fund this game, even with Kickstarter (splitting into acts etc.)

I hope it works out for them.

Chivalry: Medieval Warfare on a grand scale! Mega ambitious. Microsoft and Sony should be immediately behind this, could be the real next-gen game. If that's 1.5 million dollars on display for a vertical slice, oh wow.

6 months before a playable alpha. Hmm... *goes to check bank account*

Beautiful gifs, Dennis!

I mean, this looks like it could be a $15-20 million budget with the scope they're talking about. Or just amazing budgeting on just 25 people's part.

Ohhh - after reading the whole pitch I see that their 300k goal is just ten percent of their budget. They have a publisher (sounds like one rich guy) who wan't "evidence" that this kind of game is in demand.

Oculus Rift supprt too - well then Kingdom Come all over my face!

All of what you have seen incl startup cost for the studio is about 1.5 Mil so far, and with the Kickstr money they just want to prove to the investor that there is demand for this type of game.
The Kickstr money is not really for paying them or for making the game just for a pre-orderd demand proof.

Because the investor will keep paying them to "finish" the game.

It looks FUCKING AMAZING holy this this is a $25+ million looking game.
But salaries are just so much cheaper in eastern Europe that is why Witcher 3 "only" cost $15 million to make.
