Kingdoms Of Amalur: Reckoning |OT| An Enemy-Pounding Funfest

How long did it take you and what's your hit rate on average? Are drops from mobs randomized and only determined upon their death? So you would reload if you don't find a unique or set drop after they die?

I save before each troll and re-load if nothing drops. To be honest I have been doing it on and off. Haven't kept track of time but I have had a decent success rate. It has been a worthwhile venture doing it and I seem to be finishing full sets in there. I am level 25 and have done everything in Dalentarth now so just farming sets before deciding on desert or plains. And yeah the trolls drop different things each time they die, just reload if it's something you don't want. there is a ton of them in haxhi dam too.

Not interested anymore. Around the mid-point it became clear that no enemy was ever going to put up a fight (including bosses) on Hard difficulty. Unless they completely re-balance the entire crafting system, there wont be any difficulty to be had in the DLC either. I'll be there day 1 for Reckoning 2 though.

I'm enjoying the story, so have been playing through and not minding just stomping things. I'm hopeful that they'll be coming out with a difficulty patch soon - I'll be saving my second play-through until then.

Loving this so much so far!!

I'm only up to level six but even still, I just got my first 'mixed' card on my way to a mixed 'Might/Finesse' character.

I'm going for the goal of using Swords + GreatSwords + Faeblades + Daggers + Bow + those flying destructo disc things for secondary (ranged).

The combat system in this game is so much fun... so so so much fun, I keep trying to get myself into situations where I can just find fights more and more and I keep trying to agro mobs so that I can get surrounded by as many as I possibly can and see how many I can survive with. A great way to level is to be fighting a lot of bad guys at once when you use reckoning mode because you get the exp multiplier on ALL the bad guys around you that die as a result of the mod, so kill as many as you can before you use the QTE style kill (at least that's what I think... what am I, a stupid level six doing telling others who are so much further in the game what to do).

I completely LOVE THIS GAME. I thought I wouldn't care for it because of the graphics style but it turns out I actually feel that it gives the game world more life, more feeling, more.... love or something that Skyrim. Skyrim is great in it's own way but only because of what it is, but it really can't compare to this at all.

I'm playing on PC on my Panasonic Plasma with all graphics maxed (it's obviously not the most graphically intensive game as you all known) but with the AA completely maxed using Super Sampling in RadeonPro and aggressive Vsync which gives me a rock solid 120fps at 1920x1080. This is what I get when playing normally:

reckoninghoas4.jpg

Does anyone know how to remove the HUD items in order to take screenshots? Is there a way to make it fade away or just go away? Because there have been some moment in this game that I have REALLY REALLY wanted to take some shots without a HUD?

I've tried it on my 27" iMac Monitor and with 16x Supersampling it can only hold 30fps but MY GOD. If I could bring myself to play it while sitting at my desk rather than with Game-Pad then maybe I'd do it, but this game is a Gamepad game for me even though I'm sure having the KB+M would work really well because the times that I've tried it on my PC screen have been good, I just find it more comfortable playing on my bed.

I wonder if it's 3d compatible... hmmmm

Also does anyone know just off hand, what the best program to record direct feed videos? I got rid of FRAPS since it was causing Skyrim to crash for me. If not, I'll probably just search for it and find myself, or just put back fraps.

It's a strange sensation that I'm feeling, I was so so addicted to Skyrim and I've just sort of gone okay BOOM sick of it goodbye. The morning I decided to stop playing it I was SO miserable (lots of other things going on in my life at the moment) and Playing / Modding Skyrim over the last few months has literally kept me alive, but I don't even know whether I was REALLY enjoying it that much... I mean, I guess I was, but I'm having such a freaking ball with this game it's not funny.

lol, just found out you can "sprint" in the water. A revelation.

Breast Stroke - Overarm... heh love it. Sprinting is one of the best things about this game for me personally - the never ending sprint thing, being able to move around quickly is a big problem with many RPG's, being restricted to the ultra slow pace that they make you move in some games is just ridiculous, though I must admit because I'm burning along so fast sometimes I do miss the scenery, so perhaps the reason developers make you move slowly is to keep your eyes on their artwork?

You know when you were a kid and you used to play with planes and fly them around and make that noise... that 'nnneeeeooowwwww' like a race car kinda noise? Yeah... I just realised that I have been doing that while I've been burning around the world zig-zagging between alchemy plants. I don't know if Alchemy is something that I really care to invest a large amount of time into in this game, although it seems like money is an easy to come by commodity but things are also VERY expensive. I want my darn house so I can start keeping all my collections!!!

Question: Do chakrams count as elemental/magical damage, or melee?

My build is Might/Sorcery, but I rarely use any actual spells, it's mostly defensive stuff like the shields and chakram mastery. Most of my actual fighting is done with weapons (flame chakrams and a charged longsword), so I've been sticking to the Might-based destinies rather than the Might/Sorcery ones. The mixed build lowers my melee damage (which definitely affects the sword, but what about the chakrams?), and gives me more mana regen that I don't really care about, and I don't like the "blink" move, I prefer the normal roll/dodge.

Should I stick with the Might destiny, or would I actually get more out of my chakrams if I dropped into the Might/Sorcery destiny with improved elemental damage? It's hard to tell from the on-screen numbers which one has an advantage.

Chakrams are the throwing discs right? They're one of my fav weapons... so much fun to use, they're fast and effective, but I thought they fit into Finesse not Sorcery... I'm new to the game but I think they are melee.

Nope, they're sorcery, and they always come with elemental damage. They have a portion of their damage being physical and the other portion elemental.

Are they affected by +melee damage modifiers? If they're not, I'll probably switch back to the dual-spec Might/Sorcery, since a +elemental damage modifier would (apparently?) affect them.

Fuck... looks like I'm not using Chakrams then :/

I think Big Huge Games and 38 Studios is making a Kingdom of Amular MMO, in-fact I am certain of it. Is this known?

They should be effected by both modifiers. Look at their damage and you'll see "6 physical, 5 ice damage" or something to that effect. You can worry about boosting one modifier and not the other, or both. It's up to you. They're a wise choice for any build that concerns itself with sorcery, IMO.

...forgive double post, forget to edit in this post to my last one.

Thanks.

I like the chakrams because of the range, and it's easy to hit multiple enemies at once. Good for groups, and several enemy types that I've come across so far are vulnerable to fire, so it works out.

Chakrams are medium-range melee weapons. They're also 50% Physical / 50% Elemental damage by default, though I guess that's an unnecessary detail.

And, yes, they're Sorcery.

Has anyone had any luck finding unique daggers? I have been using the Shine and Shadow daggers that I got from a quest for 20 hours now.
They're around, but very weak. I sold the Shine and Shadow daggers once my other weapons surpassed them easily.

Wish I didn't even bother with the finesse perks.

So I'm really conflicted on the "difficulty ordeal" with this game. Playing on hard, level 8 now, 12 hours in, did the first quest of House of Ballads in the tree (Gorguath). I play full finesse and I don't have access to crazy gear with hp regen or anything like that yet, so I rely on minor healing potions for now to get me back to full. There's a fight in the tree after you rip out the heartvines that's basically a giant thing spamming ranged attacks and some smaller enemies coming at you. Now I'm fairly good at the combat and used to my build, but the Thresh was orange and somewhat of a challenge..that is until I get low and pop a potion, and repeat if necessary.

See in my opinion the difficulty is just right, stuff does take me down if I'm not careful, but this fight reminded me how easily I can pop a potion to negate all that. I also can't really "limit" myself with potions because I do need them to refill my health after a fight. I dunno..it's not that I feel cheap using them, they're in the game, use them, it's just something as simple as a cooldown would make the combat much more dynamic.

I know, not saying anything new, but figured I'd throw my feedback out there too.

You're only level 8. Once you reach the half way point of the game, or around lvl 20 - 25, you should be a powerhouse. Though straight finesse can still provide a challenge, the difficulty drastically drops at that point due to the gear you've obtained (assuming you've been looting everything and doing sidequests).

I thought hard was just right for me in the beginning area too, but once I hit the plains I was already level 19 and everything was a cake walk from that point on with just a few battles during the rest of the game that presented a challenge.

I have a question about respecting skills. I am trying to run around to the trainers and get all the ones I missed that I can. But I am stuck in a situation where my skill is only 3 and I need it to be 4 to train. But I can not spend partial points by leveling back up after the respec. So how do you go about handling this?

Also once you use a trainer and you respec, do you have to go back to them every time? Or just the first time you use them?

Thanks!

Edit: Do I have to do this the hard way by skilling up some all the way, so that I can have a few to use trainers with. Then respec, train the previous skills up all the way and get the trainers I missed the first time? (Did that make sense? Haha)

Any other vendors in Klurikon that may have Prismere? Just found one in Mel Senshir that had everything except the cuirass :|. Now I look like a dumbass with Sylvanite cuirass and Prismere armor.

OK I tested it and answered my own question. This is in fact how I was able to get to various trainers. Lots of work!

Also you keep the points from your training so you do not have to see them again.

This is for people who do not already know this. Because I did not! I would advise making a note on which ones you have been to so you do not have to worry about seeing them again!

FINALLY found myself another backpack, taking my inventory maximum up to 90. I read that there's a merchant in the Upper City part of Rathir, but could only find a door (with a supposed merchant behind it), but no way to actually open the door...am I crazy??

Yeah, that's where I was initialy looking for it too. But it's actually inside where the sagecrafting is.

Finally left Dalentarth after 35 hours of gameplay, and moved on to the Plains of Erathell. I was pleasantly surprised and pleased by how different this area looks from the previous one. It feels much more open, with rolling hills and sprawling vistas that really differentiate it from Dalentarth.

I know many are disappointed by the lack of challenge, but I'm having a blast with this game. I've even been enjoying the side missions - just existing in this world, exploring new areas and finding cool new loot has been consistently entertaining. I really hope sales are strong.

Just finished the game.Good, but kinda abrupt ending. 57 hours in.

I think I'm gonna finish up some side quests and one of the factions left and be done with this game. Very worth buying.

just finished the game .chakram was my main weapon.
It was a total funfare. would rate it 8.5/10 because of the overall value. left out lot of side quests.

The only things the game might have lacked would be variety and good character animations . Overall, not quite a fable or a dragon age game but a great value for money indeed

Very addictive, but not very fun. For all the stuff you're doing, your impact on the world is basically zilch.

Very disappointed.

So I just had a thought, while contemplating loading the game for a play session...

Is it just me, or does KoA feel a bit "soulless" compared to other RPGs of its pedigree?

I am by no means bashing the game, and in fact have lauded it over most of its competition, even on these very forums. I just get the sense that the game has an identity crisis, though. Maybe I'm just harping on its weakest asset, the story. But when I look at the other RPGs (Western style, that is) in my library, like Mass Effect 1&2, Skyrim, Deus Ex, Borderlands (arguable), Demons'/Dark Souls, and of course The Witcher 2, it feels as if something significant is missing from KoA that is holding it back from entering what I'll call the pantheon of 7th generation wRPGs. Every other game in this list felt like it had a distinct identity that I can't really ascribe to it in words. Sure, KoA separates itself with an awesome battle system and character progression system, but in the end I feel like its ultimate contribution will be those very concepts rather than the game itself. I hope 38/BHG really thinks long and hard about KoA2 and gives it a unique identity in this ever-crowded market, if they really want to make their game unforgettable. Right now, it almost feels a bit Dragon Age 2-ish in the sense that (mostly) everything is well executed but doesn't gel together to make a memorable game.

What do you guys think?

I actually have no issues with being a powerhouse in the middle of the game due to having stats/gear/skills. But right now at the beginning I feel the game COULD be hard, if it wasn't for these darn potions. I'm going to reload that save and see if I can beat that battle again without using reckoning or potions.

That's the thing, though. The game is balanced at the beginning to require the use of health potions, so using them shouldn't be a shameful thing. IMO, the whole issue could be fixed with a simple "potion-drinking animation", or perhaps make it so all potions only heal over time, as opposed to instantly. Remember that Reckoning isn't the first game to suffer from this issue - games like Fallout 3 and Skyrim are just as bad, by comparison. New Vegas's hardcore mode solved this issue quite elegantly by having all stimpacks heal over time instead of instantly.

...

Completed my first armor set tonight! Completed the Perfidious set by saving before a troll battle in Windemere and reloading until he dropped Perfidious. It's cheesy, but I wanted to get all of Dalentarth's armor sets before I moved on to the plains. This is by far the best way I've seen of acquiring rare equipment.

Very addictive, but not very fun. For all the stuff you're doing, your impact on the world is basically zilch.

Very disappointed.
Like 99% of other games.

I'd be disappointed if that was something they actually promised or hinted at. As it is, I just enjoy the game for what it is.

I'm addicted AND having fun but only since I went with this bow/dagger finesse build. When I was playing as war, mage, and war/mage, something just felt off. Anyway, random comments -

So I quested to the east following the Warsworn line and when I got beck to the west to head south to continue the main quest in Ettinmere, I realized at level 8 I already totally outlevel Webwood. It kind of shocked me to outlevel something so early though I guess had I followed the story specifically it would have sent me to Webwood within literally the first hour or two of the game.

Speaking of Webwood, I found the hidden Fae library between there and Haxhi and found a quest inside from an Echostone. Neat I thought, but I don't remember the actual story of the game telling me why I can do/reenact these ballads yet. Just from comments in this thread I've read because you're fateless you can weave into these tales, but I don't remember ever seeing that in the game. I've only done literally the first quest of the House of Ballads and have now been sent to the King. Still, even when I first arrived at Ballads it was like "dirty mortal!! would you like to help us with this ballad?" Did I miss something that explains why I'd even be so eager to be the first mortal on the seat of blah blah.. just seems abrupt.

Have gotten a very good amount of set pieces/purple equipment from chests and random drops so far in the game which makes me happy, but do these sets only drop in the specific areas of the world you find them? Or can they drop anywhere in the world?

Yeah, when I saw that both the travelers faction and the warswon ones sent you really far east I just let it be and explored the rest of the west areas and tried to do as much as I could find there before advancing to the Plains, so I did all the side quests and the main quest that was in that area until it advances, so I am combing the world that way.

I want to start off by saying I absolutely love this game. But here's a list of stuff I'd like to see added/improved by Reckoning 2.

  • Facial animations. My character had the same pleased/easy-going expression with a slight smirk to every situation. Kinda weird in a lot of instances.
  • Voiced character. I think it could've added so much more to the presentation. Choosing the different dialogue choices felt empty and emotionless without it. Like a bunch of people talking AT you as opposed to WITH you.
  • Audio bugs. There's a ton of them. Music cutting out, delayed sound effects, voices getting muffled by sound effects, conversations completely cutting off other conversations, etc.
  • Framerate issues. It dipped to a crawl whenever there were multiple mages/sprites on the screen casting their magics. It'd make things even worse if I unleashed a meteor.
  • Input lag resulting from above issue. I'm not a button-masher here...I'm fairly meticulous with what I do and it's noticeable to me when combos I've been doing throughout the entire game drops now and then as the game stutters.
  • Inventory menu. I like the idea of collapsable tabs, but it's still a pain to scroll through your stuff. Something like switching between weapon, armor, shield tabs with L1/R1 might've made things a bit quicker. Also would've liked more in terms of organizing stuff in storage, like being able to separate out finesse/warrior/sorcery equipment from each other, or arrange by set, stats, etc.
  • Load times. They're not especially long, but they happen so frequently. Exit building. Load. Fast travel to another town. Load. Immediately go into tavern after arriving. Load. Leave tavern after talking to quest giver. Load. Fast travel to dungeon area. Load. Enter dungeon. Load. That really stacks up...
  • Camera issues. It's too close and has a tendency to bug out, especially in corridor areas. The last boss battle was annoying since it focused on the background enemy the entire time and I could barely see myself on the ground or where the regular enemies were. Also related to this is constantly getting hit from off screen when there's large mobs, especially by sorcerers' tornado/fire or dashing enemies.
  • Customizable appearances for crafted armor. It'd have been neat if we could select the color or model when we made our own stuff.
  • Difficulty. Yeah, I could and did gimp myself severely to get more of a challenge, but I shouldn't really have to. A nightmare difficulty would've been nice.
  • Persuasion. It doesn't really do much aside from scoring you some extra gear now and then. I noticed most of the time it'd lead to the same outcome anyway and barely has much impact on what the other person has to say.
  • Cutscenes. I'm not necessarily saying more, but just hopefully they're at a better quality when you do incorporate them. Gadflow scene at the end was incredibly awkward.

Thought I came across some sort of audio glitch yesterday, until I realised it was the sound effect of Battle Frenzy. I hadn't noticed it before until I was wearing headphones. It was a continuous 'whooshing' noise that, for me, spoiled the atmosphere of the areas I was in. It bothered me so much I respecced out of it.

The visual effect is awesome, your hands are on fire. I love that. But the accompanying audio is distracting. Just saying, in case Curt is still reading these posts. Anyone else feel the same way or no?

I still don't get this potions argument. People are complaining about being able to spam potions... well, you wouldn't have to do so if the enemies aren't bringing you close to death right? Think that every time you need to pop a potion, if they didn't exist or have a cooldown, that would result in a death. Well if people are saying they are spamming them, then isn't that an indication that you would have multiple deaths on some of those fights? Doesn't sound that easy to me. I didn't see anyone complaining about it in Diablo and Titan Quest.

As far as equipment goes, it's up to YOU to want to put a bunch of +health items in your gear. No one is forcing you to do it. I don't think it's handicapping yourself to only use one of those. I just added a few pieces of gear with some gem slots, so I did some with +armor, some with +mana regen, one with +health, one with +health regen and some of the fights are still somewhat challenging. I do not have any high tier spells yet in my sorcery/finesse build, so maybe that's why I don't think every fight is a pushover. Honestly, in 80% of those arena battles for the House of Valor, I have needed to use a bunch of potions and reckoning or else I would be smoked, on hard mode. Maybe it's because I came to Detyre before going to the plains, but I don't know.

Obviously it's different for everybody, or maybe I am not as good at combat as most of you, but the game difficulty is great for me. Some fights are easy, some are hard. The one boss in Adessa, those of you who have played that far know who I mean, I had a ton of trouble because his homing spells + having to fight 4-5 other mobs at once I would be in the middle of an attack animation and constantly being stunlocked. I kept trying to make up for it by using only 2 attacks, but then I would have one of thoseo ther guys hitting me and I couldn't do much. I used probably 10 potions that fight. I would have preferred not to have died and had to restart the fight a ton of times.

Just my thoughts...

Basically my view on potion use in a nutshell. That said, I think it'd still be nice to remove the safety net, as it were, of the lack of cooldown. Realistically, I'd prefer a startup animation and then the cooldown but that's probably excessive.

That said, I've rarely needed potions on my most recent playthrough. Bows so OP :x

That fight was pretty bad for my Sorcery/Finesse build due to being worse at the game at the time. My Might/Finesse character didn't get touched once :( Though, again, Bows are ridiculous and the entire fight can basically be out-ranged.

I really wish I didn't go Finesse/Sorcery first. I've tried respecs to various other builds but they're all so boring and bland compared to it. Something about Dagger/Faeblades and Chakrams are so satisfying in combat that the heftier weapons just don't provide.

The visual effect is awesome, your hands are on fire. I love that. But the accompanying audio is distracting. Just saying, in case Curt is still reading these posts. Anyone else feel the same way or no?

Wish you could toggle on/off effects like that, audio and visual. I don't much care for having my daggers being on fire all the time, or my hands dripping with poison. Wish those things only activated during combat.

I really wish I didn't go Finesse/Sorcery first. I've tried respecs to various other builds but they're all so boring and bland compared to it. Something about Dagger/Faeblades and Chakrams are so satisfying in combat that the heftier weapons just don't provide.

Well I am using staves + daggers so it's a bit different for me. I think I would have an easier time if I went with chakrams because they are faster and do aoe damage. Staves have some aoe but it's either the block attack or the charge up, with the charge up not being useful unless you charge it up all the way, but then you are open to attack. If you are surrounded the block attack is tough because the attack only hits in a cone, so you are vulnerable as hell. I guess my weapon combo is what is making it challenging to me, but it's still fun.

lol, crazy bug.

I was doing a quest in the Red Marches, and a group of three belen enemies kept instantly spawning as fast as I could kill them, and as a level 27 pure sorcery character, I could kill them about as fast as they could spawn.

Is that supposed to happen? Eventually, the game crashed...

Alright, the quest is called Her Righteous Fury, and I'm supposed to knock 5 of the bodies into the cistern.

However, I've done so and the quest will no longer progress. The girl just says that there are more coming (even though there isn't).
