I WANT TEKKI DS RITE NOW OK???
shinokou said:To be serious: Did anybody really think that the two-screen concept would ever be used to its fullest by even half of the developers out there? As with any console, the full potential of the DS will be ignored by most publishers/developers for the entirety of its life-span. I do enjoy the presence of two screens, and I look forward to the games that use both, but as someone already said, the touch screen is where the real magic is.
Expecting the most out of any console is like expecting every promise any console manufacturer has ever made to come true. Was the NES any less enjoyable because none of the promised expansions released in the U.S.? No, not at all, and the console is widely considered to be a classic piece of hardware, still untopped in the eyes of many. (I'm more of a Genesis/Megadrive man, but that's besides the point.) And yeah, I know there are two screens on the system at all times, and they aren't an optional add-on, but my point remains; not every nuance of every piece of hardware is going to be taken advantage of. And hey, those map screens save you from pressing the 'start' button, don't they? I thought we lived in the age of laziness. Shouldn't the elimination of a normally required thumb motion be a monumental acheivment on Nintendo's part?
And look at all of those poor PSP users reaching for their start buttons. PSP=LOSE.

Blackace said:why are people complaing? first people say "the touch pen in pointless" then a game that really uses it comes out... now the dual screen is pointless? having these features can allow for some really different gameplay styles...not every game has to use all of the features.. It is nothing against you big Pat, and people who know me know I am far from a Nintendo fan boy.. But damn just let them make games that use these features first... I am just getting tired of the bellyaching...
"Damn the L button on the DS is useless only one game uses it!"
eXxy said:I'd never say the touch screen is pointless; it's a fantastic idea, and one that's been put to mostly good use in almost every decent DS release. Yeah, the lack of any decent uses for the dual screen is in large part due to developer's lack of fresh ideas, but do you suddenly think the flood gates are going to open and we're going to be swimming in great dual screen titles? Doubtful. We're half a year into the DS' release and don't even have screen shots of a DS game making good use of the second screen, outside of Advance Wars. I hope E3 proves me wrong, but right now, there's nothing to indicate it will.
Bebpo said:Like Jonnyram said, the 2nd screen in Kirby is actually kinda useful when you're going for medals (and boy oh boy is going for medals fun in this game ^_^). Kirby is the realization of the potential of the DS. Developers at first seemed really confused about what to do with the system so they just created oddball stuff revolving around a feature of the system.
Kirby shows that the way to make a good DS game is to make a concept that uses the DS's features but does not revolve around them. It sounds kinda wierd, but like Kirby is not a TOUCH DRAW TOUCH game. It's an excellent platformer that uses the touch pad. In fact I think Kirby is pretty similar to DK:JB and how the merging of an excellent platformer + bongos instead of it just being a-game-that-uses-bongos...makes it top-notch.
And to add, Kirby is soooooo good. I'm at world 5 and I've been going back and getting golds on all the time trials/paint trials and unlocking things with medals and it rocks. This is the first game where time trials are fun because getting the fastest times, lowest paint used is all strategic and thinking. It's about using the physics to find create shortcuts that will get you the win.
Only thing that holds it back are the boss stages are kinda dumb. Maybe they would be cool if you only did them once, but only having 3 bosses which you do twice each is really weak compared to the excellence of the rest of the game.
Kirby is the system seller for DS and if it had launched with the system it would've been the flagship title. I would say Kirby is worth buying a DS for just as Lumines is worth buying a PSP for.
I guess that depends on why you disliked other Kirby games. If you don't like playing with pink balls, this game is not for you.Amir0x said:Will I like it even if I've disliked every other Kirby game? Cause I have to admit, this one has my interest. I just like the mechanic behind it, it sounds awesome.

Amir0x said:Playing with pink balls really had nothing to do with my dislike for the game, although yes I'm not fond of the character either. Just never really dug the mechanics of the "main" Kirby games. Levels felt small, and when they didn't feel small they just felt underwhelming and poorly designed. Bosses were always pretty lame. The eating mechanic always felt same-ish, like they never went further with it when they should have. I always thought that it'd be neat if the more Kirby ate of, say, the sword character the more awesome sword moves he could aquire as he went on. And if he, say, mixed sword with fire then you'd get some awesome fire sword moves. And the game kept track of everything you ate and modified your move list accordingly as you went along.
AniHawk said:I think Kirby 64 did what you're describing with mixing two enemies.
Bebpo said:This is actually my first Kirby experience (wasn't really a portable gamer until the PSP [the DS was curiousity] and I wasn't very fond of my N64).
Although the other Kirby games were normal platformers right? This one is about speed and I really really think it feels like Sonic 2/Uniracers + cool physics. Kinda like a speed/racing platformer.
Amir0x said:Wow.
shinokou said:It's a joke, sir. I'm desperately saving up to buy my PSP as we speak. (I'm writing reviews for TWO Tom Clancy games in a single week. TWO!!!)
You have to find a way to play Kirby Super Star for the SNES.Bebpo said:This is actually my first Kirby experience (wasn't really a portable gamer until the PSP [the DS was curiousity] and I wasn't very fond of my N64).

Blackace said:you sir need to take a PSP break...
All will become clear when you find the big-fuck-off red button in world 3 (or was it 4?)chespace said:Hey Bebpo, I'm on world 2-3, and there are a couple medals I can't get to... they're blocked by this big red block piece with a rocket-like symbol on it... at first I thought I needed the rocket power-up but neither of the stages feature them. Any ideas?

These blocks are keeping me from getting medals in worlds 1-2, 2-2 and 2-3.

Hang on... my solution was for 1-2. Bebpo's is for the others, I think.chespace said:awesome. say no more! (until i ask you for more help, that is)
You need to copy a special ability before you can press them though.Bebpo said:Ah!, so you can hit those huge buttons that you see above you in certain small passages. Hmm, must go button searching next!

chespace said:hang on... where/what are these buttons you guys are talking about. are they always on the same level as those blocks?
No. The big-big-huge buttons appear once in the game and open all the doors that were that colour. The one for the 1-2 door appears in world 3, I think.chespace said:hang on... where/what are these buttons you guys are talking about. are they always on the same level as those blocks?

Yeah, seriously, how many times can one man eject that UMD?Blackace said:you sir need to take a PSP break...
WordAssassin said:Damn, where's the Yoshi Touch and Go love? That game uses every feature of the DS. You draw on the screen to make a path, you click on the screen to shoot eggs. There are enimies and objects to collect on the top screen. It even makes use of the microphone. My friends' jaws collectively dropped when I messed up, trapped my Yoshi, and blew the clouds on the screen away with my breath. Hell, when *I* discovered I could do that I had to pause just to take it in. Plus it uses the WiFi for multiplayer, where the two screens are used even more.
Yoshi Touch and Go is like, THE reason I got a DS. And I didn't even know it till I played it the first time.

One good game doesn't change my opinion that the DS library has FUCK ALL I want to play.
Think about it... for most non-GAF reading, non-importing mofos out there, the DS drought is pretty amazing. One or two DS games worth owning (if that?) from Jan. to June? That's a fucking punch in the junk.
