Kunitsu Path of The Goddess Reaches 500,000 players

So when they say something has a certain number of players, what does it mean? I'm assuming players isn't interchangeable with sales, but I don't understand how someone will play it if they didn't buy it.

At the end of my first playthrough basically. Soh fully upgraded and most of my roles are too. Early on my favorite roles were Archer and Sumo Wrestler. Later on it was definitely the Ninja and Marksman and Sorcerer(by default because it's OP lol). Love the game. Some cool and very useful Tsuba Guards. Right now, im learning towards an 8/10 or 8.5/10. Nice little game, well worth the money I paid for it. Pretty looking game too.

There has been multiple gamepass titles recently that have been celebrating this vague 500k mark. Does it even matter by now?

I would assume it does. More people playing it leads to more conversation about it, more recognition. I've noticed over the years that a lot of small, even unproven studios make a indie game, release it on GP and then end up making a way larger budget game next.
