I will never use google for anything more than a search engine.
Why miss out on Google Earth a great
FREE app.
Free, that is the operative word.
Google's business model is built around information management. They can give you the software apps for free, as long as you let them collect data on you and show you adverts.
Big business will happily dump MS Desktop apps if a viable lower cost alternative is available. This is a big threat to MS.
The MS business model requires you to upgrade your software every 2 years to keep the revenue coming in. The License fee costs for big business are huge.
Google won't need to charge a license fee, you can have all the apps for free. They want your information, which they can then use to make money.
We are moving into the information economy. MS have five years to change before the business world changes around them. Software is moving from being a speciality business to becoming a commodity business, this mean it is very price sensitive. Back in the mid-80's there was a real difference between Wordstar and Word Perfect, nobody cares about desktop apps anymore, they all do a good job, they just want the cheapest solution. You can't get much cheaper than free.
The same paradigm shift happened to IBM going from the Mainframe business to the PC. IBM makes more money from it's Professional Serives business, it doesn't even make PC anymore. Times they are a changing, get your Google stock now.
