La-Mulana 2 Kickstarter: We'll Show That You Don't Need Big Names To Make Money

I think the big thing is that the game really wants you to take notes and remember stuff.

Which isn't hard as they give you the tools needed to copy notes and photograph stuff.

But if you miss something and get lost I can imagine it being a little overwhelming.

I never played La-Maluna, I take it it's definitely worth trying out?
You like getting your ass kicked in games, right?

La-Mulana will do the trick.

Though, for different reasons than another intentionally-difficult game like, say, Super Meat Boy.

I bought the WiiWare version at full price. Did my part.

It's unfortunate that the game took so long to come out after the initial announcement of the WW version, though.

Who else bought the Wiiware version? You get audio from the remote! And... uh...

Well, what else is there on WW anyway?
Mega Man! And Crystal Chronicles spinoffs!

You can also pretend La-Mulana's an SNES Virtual Console game! Sorta, even though it looks more like a modest PS1 game.

I have three: Mega Man 9, My Life As A Darklord, and La Mulana.

I've beaten two of them!

The game is difficult in a bad way. Dark Souls kicked my ass at first, but there's enough nuance and complexity to the gameplay that pulled me in and kept me coming back. I've had zero will to return to La Mulana after trying to get through the first part of the game.

IMO, the actual gameplay is not that hard. What broke me is having no idea where to go and what to do.

This is exactly what I found to be the biggest roadblock. The gameplay itself is amazing fun (classic style Castlevania with minimal dexterity over your character), but not knowing where to go got the best of me like 10 hours in.

I wish I had the time/patience to dedicate to this game, but some of the puzzles are almost nonsensical or extremely obtuse, and you get to a point where the game opens up so much that it becomes overwhelming.

But currently it's only $1.49 on Steam, and whatever you get out of it is going to be worth that price.

Update #2

Hi everyone! Nayan from PLAYISM, the indie-focused digital distribution platform. (http://www.playism-games.com)

We’ve been working hard with the NIGORO team to liven up the Japanese indie gaming scene in any way we can, beginning with the publishing of La-Mulana on PC.

For the La-Mulana 2 Kickstarter, we've been involved in the planning process, and will be working to connect NIGORO with their backers. Even after development finishes, we'll be a huge part of the project through localization, PR, distribution and so on.

In supporting this project, you're supporting the opening of Japan’s amazing indie game scene to the rest of the world!

Phil and Spencer's Video Game Clubhouse

Our intrepid coworker, Josh, visited the Destructoid offices to play La-Mulana 1 and chat about the La-Mulana 2 Kickstarter with Phil and Spencer. In case you missed the live show, you can check out the archived version on Twitch.TV here:

Send us your fan art

That's right! We're always looking for your awesome La-Mulana fan art. If you have an awesome animated pic, a painting, a sketch, or even just a really awesome Lemeza stick figure, we want to feature it in a future update! You can send your fan art to our Twitter, or send it to us via the Kickstarter PM system!

Thanks for all the support so far, everyone! You are the reason we do what we do. :)

Oh man I knew someone would find a reason to complain about Lumisa's design but I honestly cannot see where the problem is. I thought it was one of the best heroine designs ever when Naramura showed it to us originally.

Complaining about "cleavage" of that caliber just boggles my mind.

La Mulana is one of those games I've always wanted to get around to, but never manage to find the time.

Maybe this is the kick I need to finally get going with it.... following a walkthrough, of course.

ctrl + f "cleavage" and "lumisa"
The fuck are you on about?

Ok, I just changed my kickstarter email address over to the same address I have my playism account on. I hope that doesn't cause any issues in the future.

$1,150,000 : Handheld Versions

We will make a Vita or possibly a 3DS version of La-Mulana 2, so more gamers will get to play it. (platforms included are subject to negotiation)

$1,650,000 : Home Console Versions I

At this stretch goal, we'll port La-Mulana 2 to Wii U, PS4, or possibly even Xbox One. (platforms included are subject to negotiation)

$2,350,000 : Home Console Versions II

At this stretch goal, we'll port La-Mulana 2 to Wii, PS3, or possibly Xbox 360. (platforms included are subject to negotiation)
Oh, screw off. Negotiate it first then come begging for my money. Don't beg first then tell me you'll figure it out later.

Update #3

"We're already at $90,000?!"

Hi everyone! Nayan from Playism here. What an amazing and crazy second day it's been! People have been sending us tons of messages, posting up a storm in the comments section, and we actually hit $90,000! Thank you to everyone for your amazing support. Lumisa and the gang are equally surprised at your amazing support, as evidenced above.

Here's La-Mulana director Takumi Naramura with a few words!

"We set upon the challenge of Kickstarter with quite a bit of anxiety, but in just one day, we've got much more support than we expected! We are truly grateful for your help.

That said, if it comes to an end by reaching just $200,000 and people say "Nice Job!", that would be not enough for us, honestly. We have to keep this momentum for another 31 days.

So, we, trying Kickstarter for the first time, have some questions to ask veteran backers. What should we do at a time like this?

Should we increase more limited tier rewards? Would people who received those tiers earlier be unhappy? What did successful projects do?

I'll increase the number of one-of-a-kind original sketches if you want! We're preparing a small amount of physical rewards because we want each one to be of the best quality. I wonder what sort of things works well.

In contrast, which reward doesn't interest you?
Please, give us your ideas. We want to know what you want."

So there you have it! Let us know! Post in the comments or drop us a PM. We sometimes don't have the ability to reply to every PM that we get, but we read each one.

Remember: We ARE listening. :)

Just backed this game, even though I never really made it too far into the original. I just love the graphic style (gorgeous, non halfassed 2D) and I'm hoping even more Japanese devs make their way onto Kickstarter because of the successes of games like this (*cough*The Gooch*cough).

I'm probably going to back this one too. Even if La-Mulana could be unforgiving and have sometimes really obtuse puzzles, it was a very good and challenging game nonetheless, and it would be a pleasure for me to play its sequel (though I really would appreciate less obtuse puzzles).

The game is difficult in a bad way. Dark Souls kicked my ass at first, but there's enough nuance and complexity to the gameplay that pulled me in and kept me coming back. I've had zero will to return to La Mulana after trying to get through the first part of the game.
I'd have to disagree, even as far as to say that the opposite is true. Dark Souls is awesome but too much of the difficulty in the fighting aspects is based on 'do you know the strat?', which becomes clear in subsequent playthroughs Only a couple of fights in that game stay hard in a good way after you know what to do (S&O being the main one). All of the fights in lamul require some execution/skills even if you know the proper techniques. I can say with certainty after seeing recent tech that lamul is the better/more interesting speedrun game when compared to ds. And let's not ignore that ds basically doesn't even have puzzles when compared to lamul, it's purely exploratory.

That said, if it comes to an end by reaching just $200,000 and people say "Nice Job!", that would be not enough for us, honestly. We have to keep this momentum for another 31 days.

Wow. Just wow. Am I bad for laughing at this? It reads like high-expectations Asian father.

Most of update #3 is them admitting they don't know how Kickstarter projects really work, but this quote takes the cake for me.
