Hey guys,

My laptop (Asus W3J) fried on me.. sniff sniff...

Looking for a replacement, but I haven't been keeping up with ANYTHING tech related for a while now.

Could you pass along any advice? Is there anything around the corner I should hold out for? Something you suggest I can pick up now?

I'm looking for a non-mac preferably, decent sized screen (14" ish is ideal), can play StarCraft 2 and Diablo 3 whenever they come out.... but less than $1,000 if possible?

There's this deal going on now at tigerdirect.ca but I'm not sure about "Gateway" laptops :(

Help a gaffer out, thanks! :)

If you don't mind going bigger and upping the budget check out the ASUS G73Jh. Or you can also just consider the G51Vx.
Otherwise, the Alienware isn't bad.

I own this laptop. I'm typing this message with it right now. It's fantastic for the price. Runs games up to Left 4 Dead 1. Runs Maya and Photoshop perfectly. And FYI, it's not actually a Gateway laptop. It's an ASUS being sold through Gateway.

Incredibly laptop for the money. Highly recommended.

The Alienware there looks relatively good if you can live with the screen size (which is admittedly smaller than you wanted)

Don't think there's anything really 'around the corner', it wasn't that long ago Intel introduced their new new iX chips so I wouldn't be expecting any huge revolutions any time soon.

All I would say from my experience is don't buy an Acer. No matter how nice the specs look for the price, the reliability is just not worth it.

Beware though, AMD laptops tend to have rather poor battery life. I'm using a cheap Compaq with a Turion X2 and even on Power Saver mode it's unlikely to last much longer than 2.5 to 3 hours with a six-cell battery.
If you use it plugged in most of the time like me though, then it's not a huge deal.
