LASIK, Or: "OH GOD THE BURN! I WAS NOT PREPARED!"

It costed me $500 here in Lima Peru. They did it at night, I felt nothing, I mostly remember the smell, then I went to bed and when I woke up I couldn't believe it. I took a shower and I could see my feet. I went out and I could read the billboards. After a week I went to the doc and he told me everything was fine. For me it was a life changer-for the good.

I wish I were brave enough to get LASIK but even thinking about it makes me uncomfortable. Nooooope.

My sister went in for LASIK a few years ago (couldn't see shite without strong contacts), and they botched it :( She legit heard the guy hum an "uh oh".

Couldn't fix it, and she was a disaster for weeks. Wasn't able to drive or anything. I don't know exactly what it was that happened, but it turned me right off going for myself.

That was my major hurdle, as I'm very squeamish about surgeries, even just the talk of them, but all said and done it really wasn't that bad.

It's not like I had fun during the surgery, but it's pretty quick and I was on valium with a little stress ball to squeeze. It's better than it sounds.

Is your sister permanently blind now?

I had it done mid 90's when people thought your eyes would crust up and fall out eventually, due to awesome insurance and a loop-hole I paid a whopping $10.10 for the procedure...

I didn't need glasses again till my later 30's when due to my job eye strain was a frequent thing...if I could afford to go back I most certainly would.

Never had pain whatsoever, I did have halos for a bit at night but that eventually faded.

i might get it if glasses fuck with vr (longterm)

I have to believe that's something they'll smooth out eventually.

that's weird.

I took a nap for 2 hours and I felt pretty ok. was like a hangover at first but dissipated fairly quickly.

this was bladeless lasik maybe 7 years ago?

Anyway, I'm on day 3, still in the 48 hour period, and right now my eyes don't hurt at all but everything is a little fuzzy, and while I was a hair better than 20/20 at my check-up yesterday, my sight's nowhere near that sharp today. Has anyone else had something similar with LASIK? I'm sure it's going to be a while for my eyes to settle, but going to sleep with crystal clear vision last night and waking up with blurry vision this morning was a big "Hey what's going on here?" moment.
I had LASIK a month ago.

On day 3, I woke up with perfect vision.

On day 6, I woke up with blurry vision. I could still see in general, but text was harder to read. It made me wonder if I was going to need glasses again, which freaked me out. The doctor told me that fluctuation during early LASIK recovery was normal and should get better as the day goes by. Blur is more common when you first wake up or after long days on the computer. Just keep using artificial tear eye drops and it will eventually get better.

On day 7, I woke up with improved vision. By the end of the day, I had perfect vision again.

A month later, I still have perfect vision. If vision temporarily gets slightly blurry, it's always because I've spent a few hours on the computer or playing games and forgot to put eye drops in.

Heh, I had lasik done about 8 years ago and it was a piece of cake. I didn't go to sleep after the surgery or anything, I just wore shades for a day or so. Within a couple hours of the surgery my eyes were nice and clear. Within 2 weeks I had stopped using any form of eye drops, and my peepers are just hunky dory now :)

Is your sister permanently blind now?

Nah. Her sight in one eye is almost perfect, but the eye they messed up is the same or worse than it was. Her night vision is pretty shitty now as well.

Her experience is definitely not typical, at least?

Did she get a settlement or anything?

No. They have you sign stuff that basically says you acknowledge risks associated with non-essential "cosmetic" surgeries, etc etc... essentially a bullshit clause. I'd have fought it, but she flat out didn't want to deal with them anymore. Her husband was ragey for months.

I had LASIK and no pain. They gave me some Valium before to relax. The actual laser in the eye was like 15 seconds combined. Worst part was knowing that were slicing flaps in eyes and flipping them but no pain. I could see as soon as I got uo. They gave me a few pain pills and sleep pills that I took and slept for 12 hrs. Used medicated drops for a couple weeks. Saw halos around led lights for a bit. 8 yrs later still 20/20

I asked my optometrist about LASIK and he said I was just above the threshold for being able to get it done. My eyesight hasn't changed in over 25 years if ever at all. I tried to switch to contacts at the same time when he told me this and I just couldn't do it. I couldn't put them in. And when someone else put them in, I couldn't get them out. My brain wouldn't cooperate with my finger and kept telling my eyes to do everything they could to prevent it. So I guess I get to wear glasses for the rest of my life.

I just read on wiki that the cut and reattached flap is still liftable(sp?) after 7 years. so it's basicly just held in place by adhesion. idk, i get tons of shit all the time in my eyes

LASIK just sounds terrifying to me. Cutting my eye? Lasering my eye? I'M AWAKE? I want it, bad. But it sounds horrible...

Nah. You sit there, stare at a point on the ceiling and 5 minutes later you're done. Sure things go fuzzy when they peel back that flap and you smell a bit of burning when they fire up the laser, but it's painless since they put some drops in your eyes.

Even if you wind up moving your eyes around, the laser was capable of tracking and following you... and that's when I did it 8 years ago. I'm sure it's advanced a bit since then.

I had another eye-surgery (PRK instead of LASIK) a couple of years ago, due to my cornea being so thin it was impossible to cut only a small flap of it for the surgery - PRK involved scraping part of the cornea. Plus, PRK takes far more recovery time than LASIK.

Operation went fine.

But the following days were hell on earth - eyes burning and itching like crazy with no possibility of scratching them AT ALL, and that went on for, like, a week. Ugh.

At least my vision is fine now (and though my night vision is still shit, it's miles better than before the surgery), so it was worth it.

Had PRK as well. The bolded is SOOOOO TRUE!!!! Still wouldn't trade it for anything. Vision is going strong for 8/9 years.

There are basically three types of eye surgery: PRK, LASIK, and Relex SMILE.

- PRK permanently removes a layer of cornea by shooting laser directly at it, so a number of nerves are destroyed (which is why you can't do it if your cornea is too thin).

- LASIK cuts a "flap" of cornea and shoots the laser underneath the cornea instead of the surface, so it's less aggressive, but cutting the flap does mean that some nerves are severed.

- SMILE doesn't involve a flap. The laser passes right through the cornea without damaging it, only affecting the matter (lenticule) below the cornea. The only thing that's cut is a small smile-shaped orifice to evacuate the lenticule, so it's even less aggressive than LASIK (you can scratch your eyes relatively soon after the surgery, and you don't need sunglasses).

I did SMILE in France just last month. It was completely painless during and after and I could see fine literally 2 or 3 days later. Cost me €2500.

Can't wait for my prescription to stabilise so I can get LASIK. Damn eyes constantly getting worse.

Interesting. Hadn't heard of SMILE.

Do some people get one eye done at a time?

I remember hearing that, I guess to fight off the paranoia that if something does go wrong, you'll still have one good eye?

I've thought about doing LASIK, are there no permanent options? I've seen people go in for multiple sessions.

Think of it as a reset button for however old you are. It can restore you to near perfect vision, but of course you will always keep getting older and your eyesight will always keep declining, but with it the totality of the wear will be less as you've subtracted a few decades of decline.

That's why they also say it's best to get it when you're at least 25-30 i think?

Wish I could get lasik but my eyes are too flat or something. I can do the one where they make a small cut and pop a lense into the eye ball. Someday I'll do it.

Where in France exactly? Might be worth hopping over the border as it seems to be 4000+ everywhere I check here.

You only go in for multiple sessions if it improves upon your vision. So say they are only able to originally correct it to 20/40 but then they do another eye test and find that you can be improved to 20/20. You go back in and have it done to get 20/20.

I had one eye improved to 20/20 right away, other one was 20/40 and couldn't make it any better. It was like 20/240 or something before the surgery though.

Scared of Lasik really. I have pretty bad astigmatism so it's probably not an option anyway.

So did I. Was able to get it done and glad I did.

That's maybe a bit of hyperbole, but the first night after the surgery sucks pretty damn hard.

Anyway, I'm on day 3, still in the 48 hour period, and right now my eyes don't hurt at all but everything is a little fuzzy, and while I was a hair better than 20/20 at my check-up yesterday, my sight's nowhere near that sharp today. First night was hell. Mostly because you can't open your eyes long enough to eat or do anything and in your head your like 'what if it stays like this forever'.

Your blurriness might be due to dry eyes. Just make sure you keep taking the drops on schedule.

I want to get it simply because I am legally blind without glasses. If I misplace my glasses I often cannot even find them. Would never dream of driving.

On the other hand, I cannot imagine myself without glasses...

Should do it. Even with glasses things where not as clear as they are now. I am very glad I got it done.

I want it, but I don't think insurance covers it. Also, I've had glasses since I was like 5 or 6...So I'd be that guy with fake glasses since they're such a part of me.

It costs like 2,000$. While that seems like a big chunk of change up front it's really worth it to be able to see. Might be something you want to save up for if you are able to do so.

Everything about LASIK seems like a waking nightmare to me. I made the mistake of watching a video of the procedure once and I still get chills at the thought of the little eye flap they have to make. Glasses are just fine for me.

But the surgery literally takes like 30 seconds. Though the place I did it at they cut the flap then had me sit down for a while in a waiting room then go into the laser surgery. Neither of them lasted very long at all. Whole procedure took maybe 30 minutes.

So the choice is....

Wear glasses or lens

Or

Have a laser melt your lenses in your eyes.

Yeah, sorry, it's a no brainer, I'm not going to voluntarily have anyone shot a laser in my eyes thanks!

Are there any long term studies on the affects of lasik in later life?.

Yeah I was scared about it at first too. But they do so many of them a day/year they are experts, your not going to have them mess the laser up. In 2002 1.2 million people in the US had the surgery done.

I had it done almost a year ago. Best decision I ever made.

Took a nap after it was done and kept sunglasses on inside for the rest of the day. Kept putting in my drops like they told me and I never had a lot of discomfort.

Same experience I had.

Did she opt for the cheaper option that's not customized to her eye? Not victim blaming just wondering.

It was pretty simple for me, I had no burning sensation or anything. Went to take a nap right after for about 4 hours and woke up to everything being clear as fuck. It was amazing.

Basically this. It was a little hard to get to sleep and my eyes kinda stung and I slept 13 hours... but I woke up to amazing vision.

Not commenting on that particular case, but one piece of advice I have to give is this: Don't go cheap. These are your eyeballs, not a new pair of shoes. Don't shop around, don't try to get a deal. Go for the best, and pay for it. You won't end up as one of the horror stories that way. I paid above-average price for mine, but I've had zero problems and fantastic vision, and I don't regret it for a second.

Never doing this as I will not risk the small but not small enough chance of it actually ruining my eyes. Glasses suit me well. I've been jokingly told that I look like a mole without my glasses. It was funny, until I got told the same joke by different people who didn't know each other or about this joke beforehand. Like, why did they all thought about the same joke? Fuck.

It's normal. I remember when I had it done and, a day or two after, I went in for an unscheduled check up because it was blurry when it was fine the day before and it freaked me out. The doctor told me that it's my brain still adjusting to what happened. Quickly calmed me down.

LASIK is great. Had it three years ago. Whole thing took 15 minutes. I paid $6000 but my dad's insurance covered 20%. Doctor was on upper east side so hence the price but he was really great and I felt I could trust him with my eyes.

Anyway, it was best thing I ever did. My left eye was red for couple of weeks but it went away eventually. Doctor prescribed me some Vicodin or maybe even sleeping pills. After surgery I took them and went to sleep. Was asleep by 4pm and I didn't woke up until the next day.

Really recommend it to everyone.

I had PRK performed 3 years ago and it went perfectly. The operation itself was 100% painless and they immediately placed a clear, bandage-like contact lens that I wore for 2 weeks. This lens prevented ALL of the burning and itching you all are referring to.
