The zoras are the motherfuckers that pop out of the water and shoot fireballs at you, yes they're not nice people in this game

Spot on. That's where I saved and made the thread. 500 rupees for flippers. After being introduced to (her) from ALBW, it was quite the surprise. Epic, to me, in fact. And brutally irreparable (what pissed these people off so bad?!?!?)

Let's reminiscence about the greatness of ALTTP! Namely, small stuff you probably never did.
Grab one of the fishes that flop around on land near the water dungeon after you've drained the moat around it. If you carry that fish to the big lake to the right with all the octorocks and throw it in, it will thank you and give you some rupees. You can also schlep the fish to the merchant that sold you a bottle in the village.
Also, don't forget about the glittery good/gold bee that spawns when you tackle one of the statues inside a cave near the lake to the bottom right, where the ice rod is. The merchant will pay you some Rupees for it if you release it near him.
I love these little Easter eggs.

I played up to the second dark world temple in this game about 4 times on the GBA as a kid, and then finally sat down and beat it on the Super Famicom last year. It holds up so well. It's my favourite Zelda game and definitely up there in terms of favourite games.

My favorite game of all time. The first one I ever 100% and no guides or anything back then. Finding every hidden secret was crazy and now that I look back at how young I was and able to think that I actually was able to solve the puzzles, its a testament to Nintendo. Love this game.
Super Nintendo will always define my life as THE console. I had NES, I had Sega Genesis and Game Boy and Game Gear. But nothing tops the experiences I had with the SNES.

It is a toss up between this and Ocarina of Time as my favourite Zelda game and maybe even favourite all time game. I played through it on the SNES and ON GBA. Everything about it is great.

And somehow turned them into bird people. Even though the entire world was covered in an ocean and it would have literally made more evolutionary sense to stay as fish people.

I have a 3 year old son, and now THAT is what's up. These games brought the most out of the kids that were there at the time to live up to the tale. Not to discredit the adults because it was a new engagement for all of us (not me, I had a sega and was playing sonic, all my friends had mario kart and SMW :/ )

Second, I never played this game back in the day, but I bought it about 5 years ago from a thrift store for like $5....and I still haven't played it. Sacrilegious?

The gods manipulated evolution, otherwise the zoras would eventually adapt to the pressure and reach the sealed Hyrule and Ganondorf. It's a world of gods and magic.
I've never really understood this stance. Any specific reason(s) for you? LA is great (and certainly one hell of a Gameboy game), but I've just never felt it matches the scope or the depth of LTTP. Plus, item management in the Gameboy Zeldas is a pain.

That's an interesting comparison that I've never thought of before. I capital L love Majora's Mask (replaying right now actually-- god damn, what a great game) but kind of feel like I explored the world in LTTP more than LA. It felt like I was just dungeon hopping in LA. It does have a slightly more colorful cast of peripheral characters though.
Again just emphasis, Majora's Mask. So good.
I'll admit that LTTP kinda ruined the rest of the series for me as I've always enjoyed the dungeons more than the world outside, and LTTP had 12 (or 13, if you count the palace twice) dungeons (plus the little ones scattered around the world), and almost all of them are pretty quality. OOT was all right, but then MM and WW had such few dungeons (although I did enjoy the searching for treasures on the sea part) and I felt a bit deflated.
Super Metroid. It was so ahead of its time even modern Metroidvanias feel like a step back sometimes.
I've still never played A Link to the Past, beyond the first 10 minutes anyway. I never owned a SNES.
The only 2D Zelda I've played is Minish Cap which I found to be really enjoyable. I still need to go back to that game and beat the final boss plus collect the rest of the heart pieces and kinstones.

Did you think RTTP was "return to try playing" ?
It's in that weird position for me where I don't think it's the best Zelda, but is my favorite. Replayed a couple times on VC since getting my WiiU and it really does hold up well, still highly playable and looks great.
The best designed game however, and someone else mentioned it already is Super Metroid.

My most prized snes game, one of my all time favorites, a game everyone should experience at some point.
I have a snes hooked up in a spare room and when my nephews come to visit they play. It's great, I love watching them discover and struggle with the things I did as a kid. But the little fuckers deleted my original save slot from when I first got the game.

Also controls. I love Link's Awakening but having to switch items so often due to the lack of Game Boy buttons is a pain.

Both the original and Link's Awakening have it absolutely licked in the 2d Zelda department (to say nothing of Oracle of Ages or Minish Cap) and Ocarina of Time takes everything it was trying to do and does it roughly a hundred times better.
A very good game for its time. But in the context of the Zelda series, not an especially special one.

While you're at it, sprinkle some magic powder on the indoor chicken in Kakariko village.
I've never really liked this. I mean, it's a great game that set the standards for most future Zelda titles, and the criticisms I have are minor or subjective (medallions are too hidden, overworld difficultyis a bit too high, Link feels floaty), but I could never really get into this. Now Awakening, that's the GOAT, and the Oracles are right behind it.
Bumping to thank you, OP. Inspired by your effort to give this classic a shot, I decided to start a little Zelda marathon and finally got around to beating The Adventure of Link and A Link to the Past (I'd previously lost track around
for some reason). I know, it was about time, but now I've finally completed all the console Zeldas (*menacingly leering at the Capcom games*). I'll give the much more familiar 3D games a whirl over the next few weeks. Hopefully, I can come back to the Game Boy titles after that.
