Late to the party....Pirates!

Awesome game for a day. Then you do the exact same things the next day, and the next, and the next.

The game is basically a string of 4 minigames.

I don't think I've ever burnt out on a game as fast and overwhelmingly.

But until that point (about a work week of playing a couple of hours a night) it was a damn fun ride.

EDIT: no wait, I really loved Spider-Man for a few hours and then *bang* I went from 'fun' to 'god this sucks a ton of ass' inside of one 20 minute stretch - strangely enough the Statue of Liberty figured prominently in those 20 minutes. Struggled through the game to the end, but I guess that was the fastest I ever burnt out on a game. ;)

I dunno. Sure, you basically do the same things over and over, but that's the case in any game. You either enjoy it for what it is or you don't. Between playing WoW, I've managed to put about 20 hours into Pirates and I still love it.

It's the perfect pick up and play for 30 mins game.

I was horribly addicted to the original (way back on my Apple IIGS). Up until last year, I was still playing the original Pirates! (on the NES, which was just an okay version). I was so excited to finally dig into the 21st century addition. After about a week, the game started collecting dust in a corner. Oh well. Guess I outgrew my pirate phase. Yarrr. Enjoy the fun while it lasts.

Don't play your initial 'easy' level game too long. Retire once you get the hang of things and start a game with at least 'adventurer' difficulty, if not higher. Otherwise, it's just too damn easy- before you know it you'll have all the toys and a frigate, with no challenge in sight. Rogue is pretty good, swashbuckler = insane duels. Much more satisfying to actually earn that Royal Sloop when the opposition is tough.

I think the xbox version might be more satisfying personaly, as it's very much a crash-on-the-couch type of game, and the controls aren't too complicated.

Xbox version release was spring 05 last time I checked, although that might have changed.

It's like May 6th or something.

As far as the whole "lack of depth" thing goes, the game's purposely made that way. In the span of a couple hours, you can sail the Spanish Main, find some treasure, have some cool swordfights, etc etc.

Imagine if it were in realtime, and you had to go from Villahermosa to Puerto Bello or something... that's be more boring than Shenmue.

Pirates! = goty for me.

I learned the game is a hell of a lot less frustrating if you just dont bother moving up the ranks, the way the game makes itself harder is just by reducing the amount of time you have to react in the mini-games (and smarter ship AI, but ive got no problem with that) so you feel like you're getting worse rather than the game getting better, it would have been much better if the reaction time limits stayed the same but the dances got more complex and the enemies in sword fights actually started displaying their supposed 'special abilities' which they were all meant to have...but i never noticed.

Some of the minigame elements only unlock at higher difficulty levels, however. Which might be why you didn't see them. That said, you have a good point about reaction times, I'd agree in principal.

The only minigame I found truly frustrating was dancing- even watching for the hand cues, it gets infuriating.

i did play it up the highest level my first time through, i dont remember anything that different though...what was supposed to be unlocked?

I love this game

So much so that even though it errors out for me every once in a while, and I usually have to start over, I don't mind at all

iawtp

edit- though, mine seems to error out a lot lately after only 3-5 minutes of playtime, and I'm not sure why...

I was loving it for a while... and then WoW shipped, and then I stopped playing pretty much everything else. My PC remains in upgrade limbo because WoW runs excellently on my Powerbook and at this point it seems that I may not even bother to upgrade it at all :)

The problem with the fencing stuff is that the moves aren't overt, so they are easy to miss. Fo instance, super fast low slash can't be dodged and then countered, etc. Stuff like that. It feels like a reaction thing, but it's really a special ability your opponent has. So not only is the timing getting harder due to the increase in level, but some moves/countermoves no longer work, period. You end up not seeing it at first 'cause you're too busy trying to win the damn duel.

So your comment is still pretty much on the money- the game makes you feel like your skill is decreased, instead of getting more complicated.

I will echo what someone else has said ... up your difficulty. It will give you twice the enjoyment.

But, yes ... the game is simplistic ... it could use a deeper economic model, a few more "collectables", maybe some more diplomacy.

The whole point of this release was to give one of the greatest games of all time, a graphical update. It did that. Hopefully, they will go forward with a Pirates 2, that expands on the core gameplay.

Ok so by the time my pirate retired at age 46 I was married to a beautiful Spanish chick, found all my family members, found all pirate treasures, defeated all other pirates, found the lost Inca and Aztec cities, Found Montolbans hideout and beat him, and retired as a Governor

It's not worth playing the game anymore

This is exactly what happened to me. I love the Pirates! but WoW is more addicting.

Just got done playing for about 4 hours.....I friggen love this game. Of course, I was addicted to the original C-64 one like crack back in the day. This one is just like I imagined it always should have been. Imported a custom flag tonight, I have several downloaded images of supposed real pirate flags, will import them all as well soon. Been playing mostly War for Profit, like the old one, I'll get tons of playing time by eventually taking a stab at all the different time periods. Finding family members and what not is nice I suppose, that never was the draw for me. Kicking ass on the seas and sacking towns along the spanish main and replacing governers is where it's at. And multiple ship battles this time around? Awesome. Love interfering with other ship battles or city raids. The addition of pirate havens in this one is incerdibly welcome as well. I keep telling myself that one time I'll grab a trading vessel and actually try to make a fortune with just exchaging goods from port to port......but screw that.
