I thought they handled the relationship in SS pretty well. It gave Link far more motivation than usual, in my opinion. I also liked how it felt like they were normal teenagers that got wrapped up in something way bigger than either of them. You even got that feeling from Groose, who wasn't someone tied up in any destiny but still managed to make an impact. It was all clever and not overbearing.

At the very least, it was way better than Ilia. They tried to make her Link's motivation but then she ended up being completely unimportant for the rest of the game.

I will say, they do need to come up with a different motivation for Link this time around. "My Sister/Lover/Princess" got kidnapped is really old at this point. ALTTP had his uncle as the initial catalyst and I thought that worked pretty well. Introduce a rival or something like that. Ghirahim was close to that, but you didn't see him till later on. Have something get stolen from his village or something... anything else.

Yeah, this is why I felt simply more invested in what was going on, which was crucial being the definitive prologue to the entire series. It made perfect sense and just worked.

Ilia was awful. I thought Zelda in SS was basically the same character type. Annoying, demanding female best friend...thing. As someone who is a "female best friend," I don't like how those characters are handled outside of Saria. Though in TP's case, Link didn't have much choice because he was being forced around by Midna...which was interesting but limiting for the gameplay. Colin and Ilia were basically sub-plots along with Prince Ralis and the Sumo Gorons. The main plot of TP has everything to do with Midna's control over Link.

And I still think Link in OoT had the most relatable motivation. Ignorance + wanting approval from others.

To be fair, it's not like Link can voice his opinions or what he wants. :p
Generally I find silent protagonists can be described as "compliant" more than anything..

That was just part of the culture in Skyloft. She wasn't annoying or demanding, just following a traditional ceremony. And she seemed to genuinely care about Link.

I don't get the love for Saria. She was always a complete non-factor for me. Never cared about her as a character at all due to the extremely limited presence she had.

Can't say I cared for anyone in SS outside of Zelda/Groose. I can readily admit however the town NPCs were way more amusing than the dull folks in TP.

but then you have fi holy shit

Just like any other character in that game besides Navi :D

You're right. She's like the only character who is just plain kind and helpful.

Most importantly...I like her philosophy. She's the only character (besides Zelda maybe) who doesn't care about what it means to be a real man or what society expects of you. She simply says you're her friend no matter what.

I like her a lot. :D

SS Zelda is the opposite of that, and I wanted to punch her in the mouth. xD

Edit edit: SS Zelda is like "What if Link doesn't live up to his expectation of being a man???" And Saria is just like "I don't care about what the others think, because I think you're awesome regardless."

It's a different kind of friendship.

She doesn't force you to do stuff and she doesn't constantly nag.

:/

I honestly don't know how you reached these conclusions about SS Zelda. Seriously, it's like we played different games.

Hahaha oh man I'm playing through OOT now and every time I meet that fucking owl

what were they THINKING

I hated the fucking owl when I'd go back and play the game. I'd button mash through his segments and be pissed at myself when I got to this screen and didn't choose the right option:

It's kind of sad, because the owl in Link's Awakening was actually really cool.

I am, of course, talking about the scene where Zelda cries to her father about how Link needs to be better and less lazy so that they can have the ceremony together. And then decides to drag Link to a cliff and push him off. And then...complain about her bird getting hurt after saving Link.

The funny thing is that, the "did you get all that" issue pre-dates him. The Maidens and Sahslahara would do the same thing in ALTTP whenever they gave you a long description of something. just like with Kaepora, it was easy to hit "yes" instead of "no".

I remember playing OOT for the first time and being like, HOW DID THEY DO THIS AGAIN? Even funnier: In ALTTP it was "Do you need me to say that again?" and the answer was no, but in OOT it was "did you get all that?" and the answer was yes. Confused the hell out of me as a child.

OoT is a billion years old and people still don't know how to skip text with B.

I think it's finally time for me to permanently own a Wii U next year. I have (embarrassingly) owned 3 Wii U's before hand and ended up trading them in because I was a poor college student who swore he can afford things. I have mostly sold my Wii Us for the same price as I bought them but that does not excuse my stupidity. Now to the point, Zelda and Xenoblade aare the deciding factors and now that I am out of college and started my career I think I it's time.

This is actually a pretty smart way of punishing players who don't pay attention to the text. :P

I was like that with my GameCube back in 2002. I owned three of them within the span of a month but that was solely because I was mixing and matching bundles I bought off of eBay to make the ultimate Christmas gift with a silver GCN Wind Waker bundle that also had MK:DD with the Zelda bonus disc which was its own bundle and some of the must have first party games that were part of a random eBay auction along with a second controller ;D

Stuff Zelda U probably shares with some previous Zelda game:
Collision detection
Scripting solution
Animation libraries
Camera utilities
Sound libraries
Character movement
Possibly. That does not make it closer tech-wise to any past Zeldas, though, than to Xenoblade.

Wind waker was open world out on the sea.
That's not an open word by any standard.

No, that's the issue: When you skipped text with B, you were likely to hit B at this prompt, causing him to do it all over again.

Does it? I thought it just chose "No". Then again, I never had a problem with it since the first time I played I wanted to read and the subsequent times I knew what I was doing.

I'll admit, while I don't think this is happening, simply calling it The Legend of Zelda might make it more attractive to consumers. When you subtitle things, it does alienate potential newcomers to a degree, but if people just see a title like that, no strings attached, it could lead to better sales and give the sense of a reboot or fresh start. Total conjecture on my behalf I suppose, just something I've been thinking about.

I know they're saving the full title for the main blowout though.

If we don't have the subtitle by E3, this is not getting released in 2015.

I have a very hard time believing this is a 2015 game, but it's Nintendo so it could go either way. They need some big holiday hits next year.

If they released this and the next big 3D Mario next winter I would shit corn flakes.

Especially with all of the emphasis that this game will hearken back to the original, this might be the wisest action on Nintendo's part. However, most of us would refer to it as Zelda 2015 which is really awful.

Well... the new Smash game is literally called Smash Bros. for Wii U :p

I think from a marketing standpoint it could be really wise. The huge open world aspect will be a main draw because people are that simple-minded and it ticks a box, and without a subtitle it could, again, feel like a fresh boarding point.

I still think it'll be subtitled.

Given the scope I'm a little skeptical, but given their lineup I'm inclined to believe they'll get it out for the holidays. They need a heavy hitter for the holidays and Star Fox is not gonna make up for that. Nov/Dec 2015 will be 4 years exactly after SS release so they've definitely had time, even if they didn't start the basic development before or shortly after SS's release, which I doubt. Someone at the least was working on basic prototypes and hardware capabilities of the Wii U.

She might not have said it that way, but it makes sense if you think about it. Because that is what that ceremony thing seems to be about. A rite of passage.of some sorts.

Zelda didn't create this rite of passage. She was merely sticking to tradition. I also got the impression that she liked Link regardless of the turn-out. Actually scratch that, it was plainly evident.

I honestly don't think it makes sense *shrug* Zelda fulfills her role in the cerimony and for the rest of the game
she's saving the world
. She does her role and you do yours, she's strong and gets shit done, but she doesn't annoy you or boss you around and I never got the impression her feelings for Link depended on the outcome of his (their) quest, in fact, it's pretty much the opposite from the get-go.

I really do wonder about the title of this one. I'll be surprised if we don't get one by January.

We didn't know anything about Mario 3D World until the E3 prior to its release. It wouldn't surprise me if they save it for a huge blowout at E3 2015. They could use a Direct to announce the title among other elements before E3 though.
