LEGO Dimensions |OT| Not Lost Dimensions

So I know that there's a Time Machine pad you can activate in the Portal 2 adventure world that lets you travel back in time to Portal 1, but are there any other major pieces of content that are unlocked by owning other sets like that?

I checked this out and all I found was a single test chamber. I solved it and the round door didn't open and that was it. Was it supposed to open and there was more to it?

I plan to start this tonight, and hope to get it beaten by the weekend. How long should I expect a first play through to last? Is the 10+ hours on HLTB right?

Thank you for the notice...

It's a shame that the app is... really pretty boring. It's just one big ad for the game and the figures with no real usefulness.

I would love if they updated the app to let you know which powers you currently have. It's frustrating trying to find out if a character has a certain power, or if only their vehicle does, etc.

I would say the Cyborg Fun Pack has been a very powerful investment. Cyborg himself has laser, super strength, technology - while his Cyber Walker upgraded to level 2 is just the most powerful and useful land vehicle in the game. That thing smashes everything under it, destroys silver blocks, digs up things, auto-follows, auto-attacks enemies - it's basically everything you want when going through a level.

Finished the second story level. Was disappointed that they couldn't get the proper music and was a shame that Pretty much everything homer said was archived audio. Still, classic homer dialogue is funny enough!

Thanks

How much do I have to build before being able to play the Starter Set? I'm not looking forward to the set-up.
Depends.
You can build everything beforehand, which might take an hour tops.

Or you can build everything as you play. The game stops and gives you the instructions. Fun and adequeate if you have kids since it makes everything more interactive.

You can also not build anything and just use the base as it is and the character NFC chips. :p

It's just me and I hate building, so maybe I'll just do the latter, haha.

I'll at least wait for instructions.

I finished the game and when I go to level select there's a extra "?" mark after the final level. It's not one of the level pack levels either. Is it an unlock able level of some sort?

Answer.
Go upstairs to the hub gateways. Head right, and then DOWN a ramp. I think it required a certain number of gold bricks.

The save file has a nice timer on it. (I wish more games did this!) I Platinum'd the Starter Pack and 100% (Trophies) 2 Level Packs in 18 hrs 41 mins. That did include replaying some levels, and messing around in hub worlds a bit. There's actually a ton left to do in the hub worlds; and gold bricks to get in the Starter Pack that require additional characters. I plan to just keep to content tied to Trophies. (Have to draw the line somewhere!)

Alright gonna grab a ninjago and chima character tomorrow. Which ones will be most useful for me?

I own Simpsons pack, scooby doo, portal pack, Jurassic world, wicked witch.

make sure your Chima pick is Cragger, since he's the only character who can do the Chi switches while underwater.

Just went for a stroll in dc hub world. Came across a puzzle in Arkham asylum. There's flames stopping me from continuing, anyone wanna tell me what to do, can certain characters deal with flames or am I missing something?

Do you not have the elemental keystone yet? Some puzzles in adventure worlds require keystones from the story.

Anyone have advice on the 25 minute portal level trophy? The last one I need for the Platinum.

Here ya go!

1 - Play up to the end of the level when it says CHECKPOINT at the beginning of the Glados fight in the circular room. Time taken up to this point doesn't matter.
2 - Quit back to Vorton using Save & Exit option.
3 - Choose the Portal level from level select again and enter.
4 - It spawns you at the Glados fight. From here, finish the level in 25 minutes. (Should only take 5-10 minutes at this point.)

Makes sense now as I hit a switch and a portal prompt appeared but I had no idea what for. I assume I chose the Blue segment (water/ice) and that will clear the fire?

You can either pick Red to wreathe yourself in flame and make you immune to it, or you can pick Blue for a water bubble that will put the fire out. Both work. :)

I saw Unikitty and the Ninjago Team Pack at Target yesterday! Looked everywhere trying to find Doctor Who but it wasn't on the shelf.

I tried to buy Unikitty but it was street dated. Bummer.

I have my pre-orders in at best buy, but i would have paid MSRP just to get it early.

Finished the story mode and thought id write some impressions for anyone wondering what this games about and if its worth the price of admission.

Story Mode

The games main campaign spans across 14 missions and lasts around 10 - 13 hours. All of the IPs have their own mission except Jurassic world and Lego Chima. The game mashes characters and objects from other IPs into most of the missions. You never know who's going to pop up and its done brilliantly and never feels out of place. The best part is they don't limit you on who you can bring on your adventure every character, vehicle, and item can be used to complete your journey. This all leads to the best lego campaign traveller’s tales has created. Past lego game got stale because of the similar settings, but in dimensions you are transported to a new place each mission. Every time I jumped into the portal I couldn't wait to see where it was going to take me next. The voice acting and characters will make you laugh, the games mechanics are similar to past lego games but introduces a new element the portal.

The portal

Like all toys to life games you have a portal that you set your characters and that was pretty much it. Lego Dimensions uses its portal as a tool that you interact with outside of the game to solve puzzles within the game. There’s 5 different functions that get used throughout the story mode in different ways. From moving characters on it to mix colors or to find hidden treasure, it uses different colored LEDS for this all to work and its pretty awesome. It allows 7 characters, items, or objects to be on it at one time and that makes it convenient so I don't have to keep swapping out figures. It sets itself apart from the other toys to life games.

Characters, Vehicles, Items

I felt like these were overpriced when the game was announced. Im now singing a different tune. Characters have no upgrades, they have certain abilities to use to obtain gold bricks like in past lego fashion. The vehicles and items on the other hand are where you get your value. They are mini builds and feature 3 different builds for that one item. Its amazing what each one can transform into and really puts toys in the “toys to life” name. For each of the 3 builds you have a skill tree where it can develop weapons, basic upgrades and abilities that you can use to obtain some of the mini kits and hidden bricks. One of my favorites was transforming the simpsons TV into a rideable robot that shoots lasers. You don't have to actually rebuild the item but thats where a lot of the fun comes in.

Adventure worlds

Every IP in this game has an adventure world. Its an “open world” for that property. This is my favorite part of the package. They are jam packed with things to do. They aren't massive but they aren't small. They feel like they are designed appropriately for each one. They contain well known areas of each franchise and include indoor and outdoor areas (yes you can go into the kwik-e mart and see apu) and actually explore all of springfield for example. Each adventure world is littered with puzzles and races that require the portal or specific abilities from characters. Each adventure world felt like its own game with nicely designed areas that require a little thinking and exploring that makes these areas worth your time.

I own every toys to life game besides this years infinity and skylanders but dimensions takes the cake. For the same price of those games im getting a figure and vehicle that I can build into 3 different forms and actually play with and its not just a statue. When I showed my kids that the cars could be taken off the stand and played with like normal legos it kinda surprised them coming from skylanders and infinity. I was worried a bit as they were playing with the simpsons car and bat mobile on the coffee table at first but it hit me that this is what they wanted all along. First true toys to life game. I drank 7 beers while typing this down sorry if it doesn't make any sense.

So is there a "definitive version" of this game? Or have we gotten to the point where these kinds of miltiplatform games are all pretty much the same?

I was thinking of getting it for Wii U, but someone at work brought up the future-proofing idea, not wanting to get it for 360 if Dimensions 2 isn't gonna be on it. So with rumors of a 2016 NX release... would getting it on Wii U be a bad investment moving forward? I doubt PS360 versions of 2 will come out so I won't be getting it for either of those, but I don't have an Xbone or PS4 yet.

Don't know which platform to get it on. Why isn't there a PC/Mac version? ):

The Wii U version of the game can be played 2 player co-op on seperate screens (one TV, one gamepad) instead of splitscreen but tends to suffer slowdown when doing this.

The Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game have more NPCs and enemies on screen at once, as well as (in rare cases) longer quests. For example, on the Wii U/360/PS3 there's a quest in the Lego Movie world where you have to gather a cat lady's 4 cats. That same quest on the Xbox One and PS4 has you gather 9 cats.

But for 90% of the game it's the same experience across all platforms.

People report more problems on the Wii U version, but probably by a slim margin.

If you have a PS4 or XBone you definitely should consider getting it on one of those. Especially with this game's multi-year strategy... you are futureproofed better on one of those platforms IMO.

If Wii U were all I had, I probably would just go Wii U but I hated the load times of LEGO City Undercover so much that I just don't want to put myself through that again... lol

Ah thanks! As far as framerate, I take it they all run the same with the exception of the Wii U version in 2-Player mode?

Hrrrmmmmm. I wonder. I wonder if I should wait until Dimensions 2 comes out, get the D1 starter pack on discount, and buy them all plus a PS4/Xbone around this time next year for maximum holiday discounts.

Oh dang, I didn't even think of that. I take it the XB/PS4 versions load considerably faster than the Wii U version then? That was somethin that really killed the otherwise incredible Lego City Undercover for me.

The long loadings in Lego City Undercover had more to do with the open world/design of the game (load entire city, empty that to load something new, empty that, load entire city all over again).

Other Lego games on Wii U load "normal", but none are as big as Undercover. Even this game while bigger than other Lego games, is just hubs and levels insides other levels. LCU is still the GTA of Lego games. :p

It still a great game. If the other platforms are an option, 1080p, "future-proof" and the aforementioned bits are a plus, but the Wii U version is still a good version on its own. Gamepad use is really basic. What they end doing on Nintendo platforms will depend on WB more than anything. Disney released Infinity 1.0 for free on Wii U, so people could upgrade. Activision gave away vouchers with Trap Team Wii to get the Wii U version, so whatever the NX is should be no problem.

there are no plans for a Lego Dimensions 2 right now. they plan on supporting the first game for the next 3 years.

i have a feeling we'll see a new retail bundle next year but it probably won't be a full on sequel. rather, probably the base game plus a Harry Potter level pack or some other new stuff they've introduced by then

Is THAT what they meant? I took that to just mean that they'd mapped out the next 3 games, not that everything coming in the future would just be expansion packs for the first game. Jesus, the amount of space required for that at the end of the third or fourth year?

When they said you wouldn't need to upgrade the portal every year I thought that just meant that like Disney Infinity, the portal is USB and will work with any version of the game. Huh. I'll have to ask around more at work, maybe one of my supervisors has more info.

It's part of why the game has 'internet connection required' on the box. They're going to be pushing updates to the game so it supports future figures for at least 3 years.

I'm sure they're thinking of doing a Lego Dimensions 2 at some point, but the devs seemed very much against the Skylanders/Infinity format where there was a new game every year. They wanted it to have a longer shelf life than that.

Is the intention at least.
Only time will tell if they do it and for how long. Like with Disney Infinity, if sales are not as high as they expected they will throw those plans away. Disney will also try again with Infinity 3.0, but who knows.

With this games, is better to just enjoy the moment and hope that whatever happens next, is at least good enough to justify spending more.

Well at any rate, I'd imagine their first BIG content push will be either next summer fall, since that's when the expansion waves that we currently know about end. I think Wave 4 is supposed to hit in the spring? But there's no new worlds with that one AFAIK, just characters.

I'd wager that's a good time to jump in if looking for a deal because the base game pack will unquestionably be discounted by then and I should be able to pick up a PS4 at a pretty sweet price around then too.

I wonder if instead of releasing like "Dimensions 2" they would just keep updating the game inside the core pack, so let's say someone buying it now would update regularly via internet but someone buying it Christmas of next year would get a disc with all the hooks for the new expansions already in it? I don't know if something like that is even feasible, having a constantly updated and expanding console game is apparently kind of a new concept for me hahahaha

According to this list:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1NJBVQS26Ow-FfW-cOGNJw1ME35Pkf8ujUdSk-j7JSWE/edit?usp=sharing

The following characters have it:
Zane (Ninjago) - only character out at the moment.
Kai (Ninjago)
Cyberman (Dr. Who)
Superman (DC)
The list really is great but I think I miss how it works. I hoped it autofills the first row if you set your X to "got'em".
That's a great spreadsheet, thanks.
What do the V's mean on the spreadsheet?
V means one of the 3 builds of the vehicle/utility of this character has this ability
