LEGO Dimensions |OT| Not Lost Dimensions

From videos I've seen, none of the Simpsons actually speak, they just grunt a lot? Disappointing.

Is The Simpsons the only IP which does this?

Homer speaks.

EDIT: Speaking of grunting, I was playing as Marty McFly yesterday and it occurred to me that they had Parkinson's-addled Michael J. Fox in a recording booth taping jump and punch grunts, and the idea was all at once funny and weird to me.

God, I hate it when they show me any silver thingies wherei need the witch. I dont have it (yet) :(

Ansd it looks like i need those China and ninjago chars too damn

What is the general consensus on the game?

Metacritic says the general consensus is "80" :-)

I like it, it's fun and funny.

So you can get the silver explodey power on some vehicles when they're powered up (I got the gold melting laser power on Benny's Spaceship). The ninja and chima stuff (and vine cut, IIRC) are very much limited to those specific characters though. Fortunately, I like the Eris (Chima) character a bunch :) Not sure which Ninja character to go for though - I suspect I'm just going to be annoyed by any of them (not being a 12-year-old boy hungry for POWER PLAYING MY LEGO).

They talk, but it's basically limited to Dan Castanella characters and their lines are all existing recordings from the show (which, to be fair, is a very large library to work with).

We haven't seen Bart in action yet but I assume it's similar. There's more than grunts but the lines don't always fit the context perfectly.

The Ghostbusters characters, at least throughout the story cutscenes, work the same way. All their lines are repurposed from the two films. I'm not sure if this is true of the playable Venkman though. Or what Staypuft or Slimer sound like.

Everyone else I've seen has new VA.

I think the Oz level reused the songs, though the actual dialogue was new.

For the Simpsons level in the main story, at least the recording quality was high enough that I didn't know they were reused. Ghostbusters it was pretty obvious, much like the older movies in Lego Jurassic World.

have you tried/liked/enjoyed Skylander and/or Infinity too?
what about other Lego games? It's more "City" or "Marvel"?
Not that poster, but I'd say that is as fun as other Lego games in sense of humor and story, with the bonus of actually building Legos. Portal world is amazing though.

Skylanders is still better in gameplay and variety of the levels. Infinity had great improvements in 3.0, but the Toy Box is still the center of attention.

Is not better than Lego City Undercover though. Open-world, exploration are still better on LCU, Dimensions is if anything the better of the other Lego games.

I have played Skylander but it didn't hold my attention - the writing wasn't as good, so the pretty basic gameplay wasn't enough to keep me going. I've played a bit of Marvel Lego, but I think the mix of characters in this being much broader, and the cross-polenation in the very good writing keeps me interested. I also find it has fewer flaws than previous Lego games I've played (the initial horrible ones I ran into notwithstanding).

Edit: really enjoying some of the main story levels. Just played the retro video game one, which was quite fun
except that it seemed to default to melee attack far too readily in the Gauntlet level which was mildly annoying until I realised I could just jump in my favourite super-powered-up Benny's Spaceship and just roll through the levels without a care :-D

Where the heck are the in-game instructions to build the DeLorean?

EDIT: Nevermind! Going straight to the hub world wasn't the smartest thing to do. :P A proper mission appears in the Gateway.

Yep. No idea why the developers didn't give access to the stories through the hub world. Confused me for days why I wasn't getting the build instructions for some things :(

Are they going to continue to support this game? Now that Avengers is announced, I wonder if this will get left behind and forgotten. I'd like to know more about their plans beyond fun packs released in Jan before dropping serious dollars on this

The base game is going to be supported for three years apparently. I'd wager there'll be a refresh next September of the line up just like we usually see for the other toys to life game.

You mean a refresh as in a new game and storyline? I would be ok with that. I hope they would allow you to use the original portal for future games, but they probably will force you to buy another starter set.

I wonder why they put a hard cap of three years, though? Or did they say "at least three years"? I mean if it did well, I figured they would just continue, like Skylanders has done. That has gone on now what, four years?

I want mine to hurry up and arrive. Got lucky with a good discount from a man I know... Took it from "no way" to buying the full Kotaku-recommended set for all the content :D

I believe the three years may mean we don't get a new portal at all and the softwarw will just be released at retail with figures or maybe their won't be software it'll be a "scenario pack" with three figures and a 12 hour campaign that is pushed via online update?

Then maybe in three years well get a true sequel with new portal, gameplay and usp?

It's all just speculation what they mean atm, I wager we'll hear something once the final waves are out.

Yes, I could see it being DLC, but I would prefer it was a new game. I believe there are 5 waves planned right now, and the minikits, 480 bricks (and 11 red bricks) are all accounted for in those 5 waves?

I would prefer they just don't give another 12 hours via DLC and just add more bricks/minikits, would like to see a whole new game instead.

They've specifically said they don't want to do the Skylanders/Infinity approach of yearly game releases and would rather support Lego Dimensions itself through downloadable updates that add new sets for at least three years.

I'd like to see a new story campaign or retail set or something at some point though. The story in this is super good and I'd love to see more stuff like it.

Music to my ears.

I quoted this earlier but forgot to mention that it's not fun packs from January onwards, there's one more level pack in March (The midway one) then may is just fun packs. Wonder what the probability is that the next range of figures/licenses/levels will be at either the New York Toy Fair in February 2016 or E3 in June.

Avengers was announced months ago though.

Lego Avengers exists separately because Disney don't want Lego marvel to compete with Infinity marvel in the toys-to-life genre. I expect dimensions will be a huge cash cow and be supported for a long time, maybe with a v2.0 refresh in a few years.

I'm still wondering how they will launch the next lineup in 2016. They have maintained that future stuff works with the base game and portal, but they still need a new box on shelves to get attention and sales.

So I am wondering if they will release expansions every year or something along those lines. They have to have some kind of new story content to compete against the other Toys to Life players which refresh their games every year, LEGO Dimensions can't ignore that.

I think some people are expecting we are still going to have the same $99 starter box on shelves at this time next year and I don't think that is their plan. Future stuff will have a good deal of backwards compat but they have to move forward with new characters, features and content.

I'm finding it therapeutic when I am just building the legos. The game is making me believe that I am putting together the pieces to transfer over to the game. That's what is missing with the other TTL games. With the others you just put this ready-made static figure on the base and that's it, you just leave it and don't pay any attention to it.

If your game is like Disney Infinity and has no story on disc, that makes sense. If your game is like Skylanders or Lego Dimensions, where the bulk of the story is on disc and you only sell a handful of piecemeal levels separately, that becomes a much more expensive proposition.

I'd rather buy one disc next year - even for $100 - than buy fifteen $25 packs!

Nobody's forcing you to buy level packs or fun packs though? You don't have to buy hundreds of dollars of stuff if you don't want to do it, it's okay.

I see this complaint with every single Toys-To-Life game no matter how they decide to handle their stuff and it never makes sense to me.

If you buy a Chima character then make sure it's Cragger. There are underwater Chi switches and he can swim.

But if they don't release a Skylanders-esque sequel, that will be the only way to get new content.

I know I don't have to buy it, but that's not going to stop me from proactively saying "I'd rather they took another approach". :)

Can you tell us how the Chima adventure world is?

They could re release the same portal with a new set of characters in the box and just have these new sets of characters be multiple level packs for £30 each.

All my sets are waiting at the post office for me : (

I finished the story last night and I really loved it. The little touches and Easter eggs (especially in the Doctor Who level) were so good and I can't wait to explore the hub worlds and find more. All it needs is a Lego City Undercover and Marvel/Star Wars expansion (probably unlikely due to Disney Infinity though) and it'll be all I've ever wanted in a Lego game. My only disappointment was that there wasn't a Lego Jurassic World story level, but LJW has just had a full game to itself so I'm not too bummed out about that.

One thing I didn't expect, was how much fun I'd have building the portal. I haven't built any actual Lego kits in years, so I was dreading putting the portal together but once I got into the swing of it, I really started enjoying myself. Did anyone else have some parts left over after finishing it though? I assumed it was going to have me continue adding things to the portal during the game, but other than putting
X-PO
together and moving the keystones to the front, it never did.

End credits spoiler:
Also speaking of Portal(s), GLaDOS' song during the end was great too. Does anyone know if it's available to buy anywhere?

Oh boy, we owned dimensions all of a day before the was accidentally pulled off the shelf and actually tore the USB head off of the portal cable. Let's see what Lego are willing to do. If not we'll have to see if best buy will exchange it, even though I hate doing that.

-edit- You can't buy these separate from the starter set, right?

My Benny set was missing the 1x6 grey tile needed for the Spaceship. Second time I've ever had a missing piece (the first was in a Chima set). It's a common piece, so I should be able to scavenge it from somewhere. Still disappointing.

Take it back to the store and just yell SPACESHIP over and over until they replace it for you.

Yeah, I love this part of it too. I'm only through the first couple sections of the game, but I already like this more than any of the others I've tried. It's a good product and the Lego tax is worth it IMO.

In my case, I build Legos, Mega Bocks, perler beads and other things all the time (after work...at 4AM :p), so while this game may not be as therapeutic to me; it still a great way and implementation to the game.

I still find Skylanders to be a better game, but recommend Lego Dimensions to everyone I can because of the building side of it, especially for kids. Nothing better than building a character or vehicle, placing it on the base and see it in the game.

Haven't played in days though. By my own mistake I ...erased 300GB worth of games/saves from my Wii U. So, decided to start again whenever I finish downloading everything. Tomorrow I guess. :p

What parts were left over?

The tiny 1x1 pieces, Lego will often give you an extra of just to be sure they don't short you. So there should have been probably about a dozen or so of those. But there shouldn't have been anything else leftover.

That's pretty much it. I've got 11 assorted 1x1 pieces, plus a handful of other 1x1 pieces that I assume are for the Batmobile rebuilds.

Can you tell us how the Chima adventure world is?

I don't have a Chima character yet. I just saw an underwater chi switch somewhere while swimming using Scooby-Doo and started looking at the Chima characters' ability sets.
The Aquaman thing is something else.

Oh, I missed this question. I quite liked it - it's quite different to others, and also has more of the high-value studs scattered around too :)

I mostly explored it with Eris (because more fun flying, less theme music) and Wonder Woman (for the swimming bits).

Thanks, now I have to buy more figures ; )

I finally caved and picked this up on Saturday. So far I've played through two chapters of the main story and also played the BTTF level and messed around in the Hill Valley hub a bit. Overall the game's cool, I mean it's LEGO and has characters/franchises I like. The way it handles the builds -- where it literally brings up on-screen instructions -- is pretty novel. It gives you nice little distractions between playing the segments.

The only thing I'm not really crazy about is how it makes you play musical figures and shift them around the portal/base to solve puzzles. This wouldn't be so bad if it was obvious when this was required, but it's really not; not always at least. Case and point, there was a spot that I got stuck and had no idea how to progress. The game wasn't telling me anything and I didn't understand what the little prompts about the base were saying. I ended up looking at a YT video to find out the answer.

Finally opened my set yesterday and decided to start it tonight. Had great fun building the figures and the Portal. Havent touched lego in nearly 20 years but it was all nice and simple. The portal itself is rather special. Loads of nice detail and really stands out.

Thankfully I had no missing pieces and the tags all worked. Only played the first level but there were some funny moments, especially Batmans delivery of
why can't you do magic like that
. Went to the Lord of the Rings adventure world. Yes it makes no sense geographically, but it's not really supposed to be an open world to the scale of lego LOTR or Hobbit so I'll forgive it that. Only complaint is there's no map!

Think I'm going to pick up the Simpsons and Portal sets over the weekend and likely the Wicked Witch fun pack as what I've seen of Oz/Kansas adventure world looks great.

So I know that there's a Time Machine pad you can activate in the Portal 2 adventure world that lets you travel back in time to Portal 1, but are there any other major pieces of content that are unlocked by owning other sets like that?

It's pretty cool that if you have both the Portal 2 and Back to the Future sets they sort of synergize that way to give you some extra stuff to do. Usually it's just gold bricks locked behind extra skills but that's an entire bonus area. The only other thing I can think of like that is characters who can swim being able to reach Atlantis beneath the DC Universe adventure world when otherwise you wouldn't be able to- and that's not anywhere near as restricted as a time travel pad.

I watched JANGbricks, a prominent youtube LEGO reviewer, show off all of his Dimensions stuff and he mentioned that there are a few figures that are almost identical to some previous minifigures but with VERY small print changes.

I have been trying to come up with exactly which ones he means. I think Scooby is one because it looks nearly identical to the Scooby figures from earlier this year except it has a tongue sticking out. But to my eyes, all of the other prints are either obviously all-new or are identical... so I am wondering if I am missing some.

If anyone has anything to add please help me out.
