LEGO Dimensions |OT| Not Lost Dimensions

Just saw some screens of the new packs and friggin GB16 has a Rowan Minifig in it, I hate it when Lego teases us with figures that don't exist hrrggghhhh

Honestly, it's really difficult for me to land on a solid assessment. For me, it's a great all around product. And I don't mind the cost investment just because it's something easily justifiable as a family expenditure as opposed to thinking of it as like a DLC budget for a video game. My son loves LEGO toys. He loves LEGO video games. It's a great mixture of the two things. It's the perfect Toys to Life product for us.

So, I'll start with what I think are the strengths. It oozes charm. While some of the level packs come across as lazy (I'm looking at you Back to the Future Level Pack), the overall campaign is something you really haven't seen before. None of the LEGO games up 'til now attempt to blend together the various properties. Further, even games that do have cross-franchise representation don't really attempt to tell one story. I know Infinity has some toy box stuff that's wide open, but in terms of playsets the various franchises remain quarantined. So it's just really neat to see all this DC Comics and LEGO Movie and Portal and Ghostbusters and... etc. come together in one story where characters are interacting on screen. Every individual franchise also having its own little hub world to explore also proved more endearing than I expected, and was particularly appreciated by my son who sometimes gets frustrated with the puzzle-based gameplay of the story levels.

The downside I think is just that you do need to be prepared to invest real money into this to get the most out of it. I mean, yeah, you can complete the main campaign with the starter set. But I just feel like there are hooks everywhere reminding you what you're missing out on. Hire-a-hero was added after launch as a decent compromise to allow you to not have to make the purchase for to get by this obstacle stopping you from that gold brick, but you just run into this stuff continuously. The other problem I've kind of talked about is just that I feel like a lot of the vehicle builds are rather superfluous. They're neat enough if you like micro-build LEGO stuff, but to me they neither make for great display toys nor are they often very useful in the game. There are some exceptions. But as a big fan of LEGO toys I find myself really digging the minifigs and really indifferent to most of the vehicle/item builds.

The other downside is that I'll note that most of the portal interaction wears thin pretty quickly. Initially, it's really cool that they've thought of a way to make it more interactive and not just as a mechanism for unlocking overpriced DLC. But particularly in later campaign areas where they are throwing portal-based puzzles at you left and right, it just starts to get tedious.

Overall, I really like it. But in terms of whether or not I'd recommend it I think it's really useful to know what you're expecting going in.

Didn't answer the Arena question but did give me some good information! Thank you kindly. The money skin and obvious space the portal alone takes up is a big issue.

I started tinkering with the adventure time hub world. If this world is any indication, they really upped their game on designing these areas. It feels like it could be a world from a full lego game. I think it even has some of its own systems, like quests and whole puzzle rooms. It also has references to episodes and things that I didn't expect. Also the music is awesome. Really exceeded my expectations.

On the flipside, I think I'm having some loading problems. in the new content there are some different platforming challenges that you get through
BMO spots
that are behaving very differently every time I go into them, will sometimes eject me for no apparent reason, and often appear unwinnable. It was really frustrating and I had to give up.

.

That sounds cool, my kid exists to tool around in lego video game hubs but I think he found the original adventure worlds a little sparse.

Was hoping to pick up the new ps4 pack of Dimensions with the Supergirl Minifig, but I'm worried about ending up with one without. Is there some kind of identifier on the box? I'm in the UK if that helps. Sorry if this was the wrong place for this question.

The Supergirl packs have the bit in the top right corner showing the mini-fig, that you can see below:

Ah that's a lot clearer than it seemed. Amazon UK has a picture of just the original box but under a different listing than the original version (and costing 80 quid instead of 65 :P)

When exactly was the new pack released? I haven't seen it in any stores yet.

I had a nose on Amazon UK and noticed the same thing! I am guessing they'll try and clear as much stock of the old Starter Pack as they can (which I am hoping means they'll also drop the price too!). The lowest I have seen the non-Supergirl pack is £45 on Sainsbury's website (and also in-stores apparently).

Is this a supergirl exclusive panel?
Yes.

The official LEGO Dimensions Twitter and Facebook have said that she'll be added to Hire-a-Hero once the exclusivity ends. I doubt you'll be able to get her physically; at least, they've been asked plenty of times and have refused to confirm that's coming.

Yes, but she will be available through Hire-a-Hero after the PS4 exclusivity ends.

Mmm yeah I know but I was hoping there was another character out there who had Lego construct building powers.

Oh well.

Boo, finally got around to actually using some characters in-game and it turns out I have my first dead toy tag. Of course, it's Joker, who I bought like four months ago.

Anyone know how good Lego is with replacing tags?

So the only way to get Supergirl is to buy another starter set?

For now ya. There's no mention of her being sold separately in the future.

I really doubt they will release supergirl stand alone at retail. As we already discussed, due to licensed agreements the minifigures cannot be sold alone, unless it will be considered an action figure. For a building set, there must be another small buildable veicule or something bundled together in a "fun pack". We never saw anything that indicates supergirl would get something like that. They may give her as a free promotion in conventilns or events in the future, like Green Arrow, but retail? I don't think so.

Supergirl has that exclusive Construct ability but it's worth noting that there are no golden bricks, minikits, etc hidden behind her ability. You can 100% all the new content without using that ability anywhere.

And later on she'll be available to everyone anyway.

I just beat the game. The last level was pretty great! I had heard that there was a
portal song from GladOS
but I didn't expect it to be in the credits. I honestly thought I had missed it in the
portal
level somewhere or it was cut from the Wii U version.

I also want to talk about Jake the Dog a bit. I don't think these are spoilers per say, but don't read on if you want to be surprised. In short, he seems crazy useful. I had been using him, then accidentally pressed the button you use for powers, and realize he has a bunch of different forms. And a couple of those powers were previously unique to single items (the orb power) or characters (drill power). And a couple others are unique to portals (he can shrink and grow at will, though I don't think growing is quite the same as being giant in terms of lifting things). I'm not sure what the trampoline offers exactly... I was sort of meh on the jake suit because I thought it was just typical "strong" character power, but then switched to wyld style for something and when I tried to switch back I jumped inside the Jake Suit and now I think it's amazing. All said, I think Jake is going to stay on my portal a lot.

I probably set myself up for disappointment, but I was hoping that Mr T would be the voice of BA Baracus. No such luck. I also hoped to hear the iconic A Team theme song blaring when I entered the level, but it was just playing inside the airport as if through crappy speakers. Didn't get to spend much time with the level other than that.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the van explodes into flames pretty much every time you drive it off a cliff.

Well damn... that does not bode well for the Knight Rider hub world for which i still have high hopes for :(

Abbie Yates (Ghostbusters 2016 story pack) seems to give access to the original Ghostbusters adventure world (not just the 2016 one on the shard), too.

Well, that's good at least that not having her prevents from getting 100%. Still annoys me, though.

And to clarify, "being available to everyone" later on means only via Hero-for-Hire. Which at least to myself, I don't consider that as a good alternative.

I really hope they just add some sort of vehicle with her later on to sell via retail. Same applies to Green Arrow.

Really hate exclusives like this.

They've said in interviews that they've been taking the feedback seriously.

Jeez, really? I can't imagine Mr. T could have been that expensive. I hope this isn't the start of a trend of them going cheaper on voice acting than in the original game.

I was pleasantly surprised to see that the van explodes into flames pretty much every time you drive it off a cliff.

The best would be if every time it crashes it flies up in the air and corkscrews onto its side or roof, the way every single '80s action show had every car crash happening.

At least the theme plays every time BA uses his A-Team Master Build ability. (which is NOT the same as Master Builder if anyone else was wondering)

How is the Mission Impossible level then?

It's ok. It's a decent length and it plays out the first movie fine. I don't really remember how long it took me to beat. Maybe 2 hours? The combination of voice acting interspersed with movie clips of Tom Cruise are kind of jarring (RED LIGHT GREEN LIGHT). The adventure world has been decent to good so far and it has a bunch of MI missions where you run into scenes and characters from other MI movies. If that sounds good to you, go for it. The vehicles are really boring and generic but at least the sports car is fun to put together.

Honestly I was a bit disappointed in this one, but only because the Adventure Time pack looks pretty great.

I maintain that the movie sound clips for voices continues to sound off. I'd much rather have a hired gun voice actor doing an impression which would allow for actual lines of interaction. I love how random ones like Cragger make comments to Batman and stuff like that. The movie clip ones just feel so wooden.

I've just been looking at these new packs in a UK store over here (Grainger Games) and they're charging £30 for the team pack and level pack.

I'm actually offended by that.

Really offended.

Regardless of your offence, they'll continue to charge absolutely exorbitant prices for Lego Dimensions. I'm so glad I'm not the parent of a Lego loving kid!

Boycott these idiots. Wait for deals as Mideon said or just get them for the 'normal' price from Amazon.

I agree, though in fairness, they do at least try to find clips that work with the other characters you have out. For example, when Peter Venkman says "You didn't used to look like this," which is a line he says to Ray in the movie, in the game he's referring to the Doctor. I thought that was pretty clever.

Wait, which character will unlock Lego City?

Seeing the new island with all thos great new portals is so exciting. This game has me so good.

I'm split on the clips VS impersonations thing. I really enjoy the character interactions, but having the 'wrong' voice for someone like Venkman or Homer Simpson would totally ruin those characters for me.

But at the same time I hate when the clip-based characters end up with so little to say. Harry and Voldemort are the most recent example of this, where if they had proper voicework you know there'd be a ton of fun interactions with Gandalf, the Wicked Witch, Raven, the Doctor, etc etc etc but with it just being the voice clips Harry and Voldemort basically just have one line for the other one of the pair and that's about it. That's not to say there aren't some clever usage of the lines for combat, appearing on the portal, leaving from the portal, respawning, etc, but while it hits the authenticity it also feels lacking in some ways.

But I guess not every character can be a Back To The Future situation where they can get the original actors, as amazing as that was.

So, for someone that hasn't played a Lego game in awhile and has heard countless number of good things about this game is it worth it? My birthday's coming right up and I'm considering getting the starter pack just to see how good this is. I've seen a couple of reviews and have heard about this a number of times from Greg Miller over at Kinda Funny.
What's the downside to all of this and how long do you think this will be supported? I know Year 2 is about to start for this or something like that, i know it's a big investment overtime but it looks totally worth it.

I enjoy it a lot. There are some different kinds of considerations, though.

Is it a good value compared to other AAA games? Yes and no. The base game has a lot of content, but once you start adding the physical "DLC," the cost starts to balloon.

Is it a good value compared to other LEGO games? I would say definitely no here. If you like LEGO games and there are other good ones out there that you haven't played yet. I would get those first. Most of the LEGO games are pretty similar and LEGO dimensions is not really different in that regard.

Is it a good value compared to other toys to life games? Yes. I think it is by far the best toys to life game out there both in terms of gameplay as well as post release support.

Overall, I don't think the the expansion packs are quite worth the cost. The LEGO sets take as long to build as a polybag and the add on levels are generally shorter than other forms of DLC. It's the combination of the two that drives the price higher and it's fair if you combine both of those experiences, but it doesn't always feel like a good value.

I think Fun packs are the best value at 12 bucks and open up the open world adventure worlds. Level packs give you an extra mini model, and a story level for more than twice the price (and the difference in quality between the story levels can be pretty stark).
