Just saw some screens of the new packs and friggin GB16 has a Rowan Minifig in it, I hate it when Lego teases us with figures that don't exist hrrggghhhh
Honestly, it's really difficult for me to land on a solid assessment. For me, it's a great all around product. And I don't mind the cost investment just because it's something easily justifiable as a family expenditure as opposed to thinking of it as like a DLC budget for a video game. My son loves LEGO toys. He loves LEGO video games. It's a great mixture of the two things. It's the perfect Toys to Life product for us.
So, I'll start with what I think are the strengths. It oozes charm. While some of the level packs come across as lazy (I'm looking at you Back to the Future Level Pack), the overall campaign is something you really haven't seen before. None of the LEGO games up 'til now attempt to blend together the various properties. Further, even games that do have cross-franchise representation don't really attempt to tell one story. I know Infinity has some toy box stuff that's wide open, but in terms of playsets the various franchises remain quarantined. So it's just really neat to see all this DC Comics and LEGO Movie and Portal and Ghostbusters and... etc. come together in one story where characters are interacting on screen. Every individual franchise also having its own little hub world to explore also proved more endearing than I expected, and was particularly appreciated by my son who sometimes gets frustrated with the puzzle-based gameplay of the story levels.
The downside I think is just that you do need to be prepared to invest real money into this to get the most out of it. I mean, yeah, you can complete the main campaign with the starter set. But I just feel like there are hooks everywhere reminding you what you're missing out on. Hire-a-hero was added after launch as a decent compromise to allow you to not have to make the purchase for to get by this obstacle stopping you from that gold brick, but you just run into this stuff continuously. The other problem I've kind of talked about is just that I feel like a lot of the vehicle builds are rather superfluous. They're neat enough if you like micro-build LEGO stuff, but to me they neither make for great display toys nor are they often very useful in the game. There are some exceptions. But as a big fan of LEGO toys I find myself really digging the minifigs and really indifferent to most of the vehicle/item builds.
The other downside is that I'll note that most of the portal interaction wears thin pretty quickly. Initially, it's really cool that they've thought of a way to make it more interactive and not just as a mechanism for unlocking overpriced DLC. But particularly in later campaign areas where they are throwing portal-based puzzles at you left and right, it just starts to get tedious.
Overall, I really like it. But in terms of whether or not I'd recommend it I think it's really useful to know what you're expecting going in.
OhIt was yesterday's Deal of the Day, so it's already over.
Didn't answer the Arena question but did give me some good information! Thank you kindly. The money skin and obvious space the portal alone takes up is a big issue.
I started tinkering with the adventure time hub world. If this world is any indication, they really upped their game on designing these areas. It feels like it could be a world from a full lego game. I think it even has some of its own systems, like quests and whole puzzle rooms. It also has references to episodes and things that I didn't expect. Also the music is awesome. Really exceeded my expectations.

Was hoping to pick up the new ps4 pack of Dimensions with the Supergirl Minifig, but I'm worried about ending up with one without. Is there some kind of identifier on the box? I'm in the UK if that helps. Sorry if this was the wrong place for this question.
The Supergirl packs have the bit in the top right corner showing the mini-fig, that you can see below:
Ah that's a lot clearer than it seemed. Amazon UK has a picture of just the original box but under a different listing than the original version (and costing 80 quid instead of 65)
When exactly was the new pack released? I haven't seen it in any stores yet.
For now ya. There's no mention of her being sold separately in the future. So the only way to get Supergirl is to buy another starter set?

Is this a supergirl exclusive panel?
Yes.Is this a supergirl exclusive panel?
Yes, but she will be available through Hire-a-Hero after the PS4 exclusivity ends.
Yes.
The official LEGO Dimensions Twitter and Facebook have said that she'll be added to Hire-a-Hero once the exclusivity ends. I doubt you'll be able to get her physically; at least, they've been asked plenty of times and have refused to confirm that's coming.

Wait, this is in the Xbox and Nintendo versions of the game?
That's some salty stuff right there. I'm on PS4 and even I think that's BS.
I probably set myself up for disappointment, but I was hoping that Mr T would be the voice of BA Baracus. No such luck. I also hoped to hear the iconic A Team theme song blaring when I entered the level, but it was just playing inside the airport as if through crappy speakers. Didn't get to spend much time with the level other than that.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that the van explodes into flames pretty much every time you drive it off a cliff.
Supergirl has that exclusive Construct ability but it's worth noting that there are no golden bricks, minikits, etc hidden behind her ability. You can 100% all the new content without using that ability anywhere.
And later on she'll be available to everyone anyway.
Well, that's good at least that not having her prevents from getting 100%. Still annoys me, though.
And to clarify, "being available to everyone" later on means only via Hero-for-Hire. Which at least to myself, I don't consider that as a good alternative.
I really hope they just add some sort of vehicle with her later on to sell via retail. Same applies to Green Arrow.
Really hate exclusives like this.
They've said in interviews that they've been taking the feedback seriously.

How is the Mission Impossible level then?
I've just been looking at these new packs in a UK store over here (Grainger Games) and they're charging £30 for the team pack and level pack.
I'm actually offended by that.
Really offended.
Regardless of your offence, they'll continue to charge absolutely exorbitant prices for Lego Dimensions. I'm so glad I'm not the parent of a Lego loving kid!

I maintain that the movie sound clips for voices continues to sound off. I'd much rather have a hired gun voice actor doing an impression which would allow for actual lines of interaction. I love how random ones like Cragger make comments to Batman and stuff like that. The movie clip ones just feel so wooden.
Does the character base work for every system? I bought the Wii U one but I got an Xbox one for my son
Wait, which character will unlock Lego City?
Seeing the new island with all thos great new portals is so exciting. This game has me so good.
Ugh. Thanks! There are 3 character bases. One for Xbox One, one for Xbox 360, and one for everything else. So unfortunately the Wii U base will not work with the Xbox One, no.
So, for someone that hasn't played a Lego game in awhile and has heard countless number of good things about this game is it worth it? My birthday's coming right up and I'm considering getting the starter pack just to see how good this is. I've seen a couple of reviews and have heard about this a number of times from Greg Miller over at Kinda Funny.
What's the downside to all of this and how long do you think this will be supported? I know Year 2 is about to start for this or something like that, i know it's a big investment overtime but it looks totally worth it.
