Leonard Nimoy has died :(

Looks like the Vulcan species have finally reached extinction. RIP...

He kept us safe from supernovas and romulans and he'll never be forgotten.

Reading this thread made me think of who is left and who has gone before. I remember when the others died, odd how those moments can be remembered after so many years still.

Last summer I went to a con and Nichelle Nichols was one of the people there. It was so great to see her. Was my first con too. She sung a little bit. She even danced some which surprised pretty much everyone. I think everyone loved that since she is widely considered the "First woman" of Star Trek. But what got to me was how so often she couldn't keep track of what she was even talking about. She'd fall back into questions she had already spoke about. It made me feel uncomfortable. I think a lot of people were since you could tell she was struggling to remember the current conversations. Pretty sure she had to cut her later speaking event due to being tired. She did come out to dance at the end of the whole con though as I said.

Now with Nimoy's passing I can't help but think of her.

She reminded me of my grandmother who I lost.

Strange how you can care about people you never even spoke too.

I think a big part of it, especially with the Star Trek cast, is that they've always been around, just like family. I don't really remember a time when I didn't know who Kirk and Spock were, much like how your parents and grandparents have always been around through your life, we sometimes take for granted that they're around until they pass away and they're gone.

I'm bummed about Nimoy, but I think Shatner eventually passing away is going to destroy me...

This is exactly how I feel. As ridiculous as it may sound to some people, losing Nimoy was like losing someone I grew up with. I may not have known the real person but he was always a part of my life.

Yeah, the original cast was never forgotten and they always found ways to integrate them into newer incarnations of Trek. Nimoy was in the original series, the animated series, the six original movies, Star Trek TGN and the Abrams Movies. He was also in the original Star Trek pilot, before Shatner or any of the other original cast members joined the show. He has always been there as Spock for many different generations of fans. .

I don't think I'll get as worked up when Shatner passes. Even if he's become nicer in recent years there's a bit of a douchy legacy left behind. Nimoy was just an absolutely great guy.

Nimoy also didn't turn his Star Trek films into vanity projects that will be laughed at for years.

How is that even comparable? Nimoy and Shatner were pretty damn close (like I said each-others best men at their weddings, etc). Shatner hated Roddenberry with a passion and discussed his dislike of him in his autobiography. Shatner was an ass to a lot of people, but he and Nimoy especially post-TV Series were very close..

I mean, this is a nice narrative and all, but if they were as close as some keep wanting to believe, it doesn't really make sense why Shatner wouldn't be at his funeral. Take a private plane, it would take a couple hours either tonight after the charity event or in the early morning. It's strange that he's not doing that. What that reason is, who really knows. Maybe he actually is too broken up to attend? I'm not saying they hated each other or were rivals to the very end or any weird shit like that, but to keep acting like it's not even a little strange is kinda naive.

I'm not sure we need to compare the two's qualities AS men so directly. I'm not sure Nimoy would want his death to be used as a prism through which we judge William Shatner, and find him falling short, either. And it's not like either man doesn't have their fair share of big fat mistakes in their past. Taking the measure of a man is something many do when that man passes. But while a measuring stick CAN be a weapon of sorts, it doesn't have to be.

Yeah, Shatner's death probably won't elicit the same reaction's Nimoy's just did, but I don't think it has anything to do with whether Shatner was "douchier" than Nimoy or whatever. I think it's just that the way the two shared themselves with the world was different, and that plays a part in how the world will remember them when they go. With Leonard, people feel like they have to give back so much more, because the way he gave of himself was a little more earnest, a little more curious, and it felt a little more personal because of that.

Shatner... is Shatner. He's had a second (and a third) life in entertainment by embracing and celebrating the public persona of "SHATNER." That's a different kind of giving, yunno? And when he goes, the love that comes out of the crowd is going to have a different flavor because of that. It's still going to be love, though.

Man I just heard of the news, holy shit :(

RIP Mr. Nimoy. I shall remember you as Spock, the narrator of Seaman and Civ IV, and your appearances in Simpsons and Futurama.

Live and prosper ;_;

Shatner is the only one left among the power trio huh? What about the other cast? I know George Takei is still alive and kicking.

He was spotted crying in the Florida airport. He clearly seems broken up by this.

He was always great but I took him for granted. When he shows up in Star Trek 2009 I suddenly realized what a giant he was in terms of talent and presence, towering over others even at his age. Irreplaceable.

Seems like Shatner is getting a bit of flack on Twitter (typical) about him not attending Leonards funeral. I will be the first to admit I am not Shatners biggest fan. I find him a bit too "egotistical" for my tastes although I love the character James T Kirk. However I disagree with him being criticised for not attending.

At the end of the Shatner knew Nimoy a hell of a lot better than us Internet plebs so he would know what Leonard would've wanted. In a perfect world Shatner could of course drop everything and attend the funeral. But we don't live in a perfect world, by attending the funeral he would have to leave an important charity in the lurch picking up the pieces, Shatner made the right call, I just hope he can tune out those dickheads that are trying to call him out on it.

Urgh this just makes me sick :-

This is one I knew would hit me hard. Spock wasn't even my favorite of the main three, but I've been a huge fan of Nimoy himself forever. I just love his face, his voice, that way he carried himself. He was the best part of ST2009 even.

I even got sad when Chrome crashed the other day and the error tab came up, which has always said "He's gone, Jim".

Yeah, this.

It will be sad, I might shed a tear, but his ego has kind of ruined him a bit in my eyes.

He's like that uncle you love to death and you cry when he died, but he kind of was someone you avoided in life because he had some bullshit story or pyramid scheme, or there was a story going around about him hitting his wife or something.

Nimoy had a Hell of a career (Star Trek, Fringe, directing Three Men and a Baby, that catchy Hobbit song.) And it's sad to see a bunch of sub-human idiots taking a pop at William Shatner. Especially as none of those idiots have ever spent any genuine time with Nimoy or Shatner, and thus are completely out of their element.

Shatner said his children are going to the funeral.

The shatner flack is honestly disgusting. By all accounts he and Nimoy were VERY close and has been known to be very nice in recent years.

maybe..just maybe it is too much for him?

I know when my best friend dies, I won't go to the funeral. I already told her that and explained it to her. I'll not be able to handle it and I just can't.

I told her I will sit at home and drink a bottle of lagavulin.

I don't know, maybe it is the same for shatner.

Some people cannot emotionally handle funerals. I'm sure Shatner has had enough of them after his wife died. It's a shame people are attacking someone for not going to funeral, there many ways to pay your respects to someone besides that.

Yeah I personally would never criticise anyone for how they mourn, to me it is a deeply personal thing. I don't get where people feel they have a right to criticise how people mourn. By all accounts Bill and Leonard were great friends and they were there for each other when it mattered.

On another note Bill is doing a bit of a twitter thing now where people can tweet memorable things about Leonard using the hashtag #LeonardNimoy if anyone is interested.

I didn't know there are only 4 days separating Bill and Leonard's birthday.

Watched WoK in memoriam last night.

Some of it has aged terribly, but looking at it as a 40+ year old some of its themes resonate far more with me now than when I was younger, and solely interested in the shootybang bits, revenge and dat early CGI using fractals during the genesis promo.

Man, she still attends cons even with her health and age huh? Props to her.

Yeah. I guarantee Nimoy would have preferred the charity event go as planned anyway. What a stupid controversy.

A billboard company in Atlanta is doing their own tribute to Nimoy.

There are 15 to those billboards around Atlanta.

Honestly, with the HD remaster, I think it makes it look better. Some things from the early 80s haven't aged well, but I think WoK really still hits it home.

William Shatner had a tribute to Nimoy made from selfies of people doing the Vulcan salute.

Why did I ask for all those #LLAP selfies? For a @gishwhes task as a tribute to Leonard. Thank you!
