A Game of Thrones, published in 1996 by Hugo award-winner George R. R. Martin, set the world of fantasy writing on fire. It changed the way fantasy novels were written and inspired a generation raised on Tolkien-clones to create new fantastic fiction for more mature readers. While a bestseller in its own right, it would take the TV show to become a cultural icon. Suddenly this author with decades of writing behind him, well regarded by critics, his peers, and his genre audience, has become a household name, appearing on late night television, talk shows, even gossip rags. Who knew he would be on Conan O'Brien or photographed by Annie Leibovitz, best known for her Vanity Fair and Rolling Stone shots of celebrity actors and actresses and rock stars?

With the fifth season ending and now beyond the point that the print books are (and rumors of the sixth and penultimate book arriving before Season Six), now would be a great time for you to step in and read the books for the first time. Or maybe you're new to the series period and want to know your Essos from your Hoares. Your Smallwoods from your Manwoodys. Or learn about clever metaphors for sexual terms that you can giggle about and post in the official threads.

UPDATES WILL BE EVERY SUNDAY STARTING JUNE 21.

Please read below for our spoiler policy for this thread.

Many of you will be coming from the show. Some may not be. To respect them, please spoiler tag anything outside of that week's chapters. If you read ahead, please spoiler tag. If you talk about things that happen later, please spoiler tag. Even if it makes this thread look like an FBI UFO file, the CIA's documents on Snowden, or Jim Bob Duggar's police record.

Again: if it's in the chapters we're reading, then it's fair game. If it's beyond, tag it like you're a Shark or Jet in Time Square circa 1979.

COMPARING OUR CURRENT CHAPTERS TO THE SHOW IS OKAY. Please don't talk about the show BEYOND where we're at. We might have Ice and Fire virgins all together.

Example:

I love how Cat said that to Jon. I hate bastards too. I wonder if we'll read that's going through her head when the Red
Baron comes down and steals her away for his bride while Snoopy shakes his fist and goes ARRRRRRR!

PLEASE DO NOT SPEND LONG PERIODS TALKING ABOUT THE SHOW, THE DIRECTION, ETC. At least until we get further into the books. We already have several threads to bitch about D&D's direction for the show. Let's talk about reading books here.

If we get enough people in here in the next day or so I could add the first chapters to the reading list to talk about early.

I of course need to watch my mouth because I'd hate to get banned in my own thread by my own rules. :p

I wanted to read the entire series before watching any of the television show, but only had the time to finish book 1. I gave in to watching the TV show and setting aside my plan to read before watching. I started watching the series slowly over the course of a year or so while borrowing the first 3 seasons BluRays, and watching season 4 and the first 8 episodes of season 5 on HBO GO.

I've been thinking of reading book 2 since the finale Sunday night to see how story points have diverged. I also enjoyed the first book a great deal, and the TV series has been incredibly entertaining and provided me with a lot of great imagery for locations and characters. I think I may have to start reading book 2 when I hit the sack tonight...

Well I did say "GAME OF THRONES" but I meant the entire series. I didn't want to cause confusion for people who haven't read the books but watched the show unaware of the official title. We'll get to Clash.

How many pages is each book? (average)

Reading 9 chapters a week (a couple extra on holiday weeks) it will take us just less than two months. Of course, if people are starting to read ahead more I can adjust it.

I'd publish the calendar but it's spoilery.

I won't be reading with you, but I would like to suggest the fantastic Audiobooks should anyone find the writing a bit dry. They are read by Roy Dotrice and are fantastic!

I swore I'd read the books once S5 had concluded, so I think I'll join you.

I guess I'll be over here! yay!

Reading for the first time while my fiancé re-reads. Gonna be fun!

Already about ~140 or so pages into AGOT, and enjoying it. I think that's going to be the hardest book to get through because it seems so close to the first season and I've seen that like 5 or 6 times.

I have read Books 1 and 2 but I have all five.

Just to be 100% sure, is a "Dance With Dragons" the last book in the series (so far)?

Yes.
There are other stories (novellas) but they're not set during the time period of the books.

I wanted to use the gif of Tyrion slowly dragging his small council chair, but I can't find a decent version. Which is to say I'm in. I did have to rebuy the entire series, though. After checking my bookcase the only one not currently on loan (and probably gone for good) is Dance with Dragons. Good thing Walmart had the books on sale a month or so ago, I managed to pick up all 5 paperbacks for $10 + shipping.

Just started this a few weeks ago coincidentally.
Upto the part where
Tyrion is captured by Catelyn and they fight the mountain dudes

It's like watching the show in my brain.

That's why I love it.

I picture those amazing actors as I'm reading.

The show is fairly faithful to the books in the first, second season. There are still enough deviations to keep going of course! Plus all that dense back story you missed!

so we start reading on the 21st or discussing chapters on the 21st?

Both! Some are reading early - in the other thread I said we could do a three chapter read preview since everyone was excited to begin. Same could apply here.
