Let's talk about GT Mobile (PSP)

The black man everyone at Activision can agree on
Per request that I move a comment of mine from another thread to attempt to start a discussion on it.

GT Mobile is never coming out... the sooner folks accept that.. the better... it was a carrot... and they lead you with it... now get back out front and pull that PSP cart!

Discuss.

I think that a Gran Turismo title will come out for the PSP eventually, but I hope that instead of it being a "port" of Gran Turismo 4, it's a completely new one designed specifically for the PSP...

The last interview he did I believe Kaz mentioned that his focus was no longer on making a PS2 port...

If you want a driving simulation you can still hope for an us release or import the european version of TOCA Race Driver 2. That game is awesome and you can switch the screen upside down and use the analog stick for analog acceleration/brakes.

I seem to remember something about the PSP mode focusing on the non-interactive mode (B-Spec?)... Maybe that was just a rumor though.

My bet is that

- it was little else than slide ware made for launch
- screenshots were from the PS2 engine
- it fulfilled the hype mission of getting people appreciate PSP as powerful
- once they started to implement it they found out that they'd need to remodel the cars with a lot lower polygon count to get the game run, and could not still have more than a few cars on the street
- team shifted over to do the bike game, while main team took on GT PS3

I don't know why they'd make a full GT for PSP if it wasn't a port. Why spend that kind of time on something that is much better played on a console

I'm guessing that the vast majority of people never finished GT4 100%. A GT4 port made sense when they were hyping it, especially if game saves were transferable. PSP probably couldn't handle it without lots of effort being put into it

you forgot:

- working on psp devkits gave the programmers herpes
- no one plays games on psp anyway lol
- the ds is really putting the hurt on my wallet

You might want to ask Rockstar the samething since they made a new version of GTA on the PSP.

I seem to recall that between the GT2000 demo and the first appearance of what finally became GT3, there was a pretty significant period of silence from PD where we got very little in terms of screenshots and other signs of development. I have a feeling that GT Mobile will surface one day like GT3 did; very suddenly and in a very spectacular fashion.

Sony has to know that they're in for a tough slog with Nintendo for portable dominance. A mobile version GT makes total sense as something they would hold for the right moment.

Maybe they didn't anticipate the massive surge of racing games to the PSP and they're just saving it?

Possibly, but the sales of racers on the PSP should be a good incentive for them to release it. That's clearly the most popular genre on the PSP at the moment, so it only makes sense to get the most popular racing series on it to take advantage of that.

haha thats a crazy idea, dunno how well it works, but sounds neat none the less, haha.

GT is all about realistic cars behaving the way they should and tuning them to your preference. Why would you spend that kind of time on a series that prides itself on simulation where the only control input is an analogue nub and a d-pad. I'd expect them to go the easier route and port as much as they can from existing GTs and stick it on the PSP. I doubt it would hurt sales much if at all

Yeah, but Rockstar North =/= Rockstar Leeds.

North is still helping them out with it though. Even so Polypony is big enough that their entire team doesn' have to work on it. Kaz doesn't really need to direct it, much like with Tourist Trophy. GT5 is obviously going to be their main focus but they can give some to GTM also to get it finished up.

I wonder how many bought the PSP on the expectation that GT was (supposed to be) coming out shortly thereafter? Wicked bait 'n switch. Not to mention GTA being delayed, which was half the reason I bought it. Thank god for Lumines.

I bought it expecting it to come out this year. There's some other games I'm more worried about getting localized than the release of GT Mobile now though.

GTA was delayed? News to me, heck I don't think they even announced a launch date for a good long time in the first place. All I knew was GTA was coming.

Dunno what happened but I am sure it will appear...sooner or later. My guess is Summer 2k6. Consider that the bikes game appears at the end of 2k5...so there are 6 months to do it.

Many of you claim that it's a nonsense to bring realistic-control series to PSP, mainly because the PSP control layout sucks and it would be very hard to reproduce them. But you forget that since the beginning of times the GT series have always had an arcade mode...And that GT mobile could be entirelly based on that.

So what do I expect ?
I expect a pretty cheap mix of the GT series in portable form, with arcadish controls and all the TUNNING there. Online modes will be present and I am sure PD would add something more...BUt overall no big surprises.

It comes on the 25th next month.

Right, it's just delayed. The company has a lot to do, but it's inconceivable that PSP will come and go without a Gran Turismo, especially after Sony committed a promise to it.

Everybody was involved in GTA:LCS -- you can't have a production that big without more than just coders involved. Leeds did programming, but it's still Houser and gang doing dialog and scenario. R* North supposedly wasn't even the lead on San Andreas -- most was done in the NY studio, with North either on other projects or collaborating or something like that.

Wasn't GT1 released before the DualShock? I don't think the PSP's control will fail this system as much as people are saying. The analog nub has been something of a disappointment, but it's still alright when games are programmed for it well.

At least the PAL copy used and supported it :P

I only got into racing sims this generation, so I'm spoiled by analog buttons, I wouldn't want to play a racing sim without them. F355 Challenge on the PS2 sucked until I got a wheel because it didn't support the DualShock2's analog buttons. And the PSP doesn't have them. Does that dampen anyone else's enthusiasm for PSP GT or Colin McRae or whatever?

It will probably be released late 2006/early 2007 as a stopgap for people who want Vision GT. I wouldn't be shocked if this game transfers data with VGT. Polyphony probably figured it was better to have GT Mobile depend on VGT as opposed GT4, which was the original plan. I don't expect to see anything on it until E3 2006, if not later (PlayStation conference?).

Can anyone name a single upcoming PSP game that isn't better represented on the ps2 or another of the consoles?
it's just, I think I'm going to get rid of mine, I would only ever play it at home(I drive everywhere) and it never gets played anymore. I played the hell out of Lumines, which was a unique and awesome experience.
I get a ton of play out of my DS with pick up and play stuff like meteos, zoo keeper, yoshi, wario, etc.
The trade in would go a long way right now....360launch

Loco Roco. The game many here who attended TGS chose as the playable of the show.

What ever's going on with this game it better be done in the next 3 months or so.

The U.S. market should be OK with GTA being the big gun, but Japan is really gonna be hurting if they don't get Gran Turismo.

Im not F'n tapping buttons or driving with TCS. What the hell is the point? Why the hell did they not have analog buttons? >:(

MAYBE they are waiting for Sony to let them use the full system specs? I mean why would they spend so much time on GT:Mobile only to see other games look better due to a bigger battery and full specs being released 4 months later.

DP takes forever to make a game - I would guess they are still doing a PSP GT but it may not be out for a few years.

It's really no harder to make fun of any other piece of gaming paraphernalia, it's all just a matter of your perspective.

It wouldn't be a Gran Turismo game without a number of frustrating delays...

Eurogamer: About PSP. Obviously you're making GT4 mobile for PSP. It's a bit of a silly question, but will it be a full version of GT4 on a handheld, and will it support wireless multiplayer?

Kazunori Yamauchi: Firstly, the answer is no. The PSP game will not be the same experience. Secondly, whether you will be able to play against each other wirelessly, the answer is yes. I've changed the focus of the PSP version of the game. The focus is on playing together.

I think it shows why we haven't seen it in awhile since it went from just being a port of GT4 to being its own game.

Hehe, granted, but at least it cleared up that rumor that Unison posted.
