Music like any form of entertainment is subjective, so I think that's simply a leading question.

Here is what I've been hearing on and off for what seems to be the past 2 years on various radio stations from various sources...

Cal-LA-FORNIA GURLS - Daisy Dukes on something...
Like a G-6
See you driving round town
wash your teeth with a bottle of jack
Just a dream nelly

frankly it all sounds the same and sounds like utter fucking shit...

makes me want death and deaf...

so yeah music was better like maybe 4-5 years ago...

I do believe we have found the issue.

welp I hear all this on basically z100 when I'm driving my 19 year old sister and her pals around... makes me wanna drive 140mph into a river or off a cliff...

haven't heard a good song on the radio since 2007 ish ?

it's not music it's just samey sounding jingles and vocals to brainwash young people into a false sense of security...

Sugar, ah honey honey
You are my candy girl
And you've got me wanting you.
Honey, ah sugar sugar
You are my candy girl
And you've got me wanting you.
I just can't believe the loveliness of loving you
(I just can't believe it's true)
I just can't believe the one to love this feeling to.
(I just can't believe it's true)
Ah sugar, ah honey honey
You are my candy girl
And you've got me wanting you.
Ah honey, ah sugar sugar
You are my candy girl
And you've got me wanting you.
When I kissed you, girl, I knew how sweet a kiss could be
(I know how sweet a kiss can be)
Like the summer sunshine pour your sweetness over me
(Pour your sweetness over me)
Sugar, pour a little sugar on it honey,
Pour a little sugar on it baby
I'm gonna make your life so sweet, yeah yeah yeah
Pour a little sugar on it oh yeah
Pour a little sugar on it honey,
Pour a little sugar on it baby
I'm gonna make your life so sweet, yeah yeah yeah
Pour a little sugar on it honey,
Ah sugar, ah honey honey
You are my candy girl
And you've got me wanting you.
Oh honey, honey, sugar sugar ..
You are my candy girl .

I suppose you could make the argument that popular music these days is really, really bad compared to how it was in the past. However, there's great stuff coming out these days, you just need to know where to look.

Pretty much everything about the the 30s-60s was superior creatively, I think.

I honestly think it's because in a lot of ways, there were many more restrictions. Whether it was censorship (taboos), technology or instruments... in general you just had to be able to do more with less. That always breeds creativity.

The point is you would experience similar things if you put on the radio 30-40 years ago.

I suppose so... but why does it all sound the same ? Everytime I get in the car for maybe the past year or so, the same songs just keeps being played...

maybe I'm just old... idk

damn kids and their generic trash...

Id guess you're not old enough. 20s? It's like the period when you turn 10 and notice how stupid Barney is. An adult would never waste their time hating on it, though. IMO when you get even older you notice pop music is just silly fun for people who don't take it too seriously .. It's not worth hating (at least in my experience.. on the other hand.. Some people just grow more critical).

The same period of time that brought us Roy Orbison, The Kinks, The Beatles, Simon & Garfunkel and The Rolling Stones and also brought us such hits as "Big Girls Don't Cry", "Monster Mash", "Please Mr. Postman", "Walk Like a Man" and everything the Beach Boys ever did.

So no.

I dunno, Metal is still pretty awesome today.

Metal sucks right now. After the BM and DM movements petered out in the 90s all you have now are nigels trying to combine metal clumsily with other genres, and awful awful -core on the radio. Metal's deader than a doornail.

one of these things is not like the other

If you turned the radio on in the early 60s, you'd hear the same songs by The Temptations, The Supremes, The Crystals etc. with the gaps filled in with songs by dozens of imitators (including one group called The Cookies) on loop. Their sound wasn't all that distinguishable from one to the other if you were unfamiliar with the groups themselves or teen culture back then.

What's popular is by definition what's in demand and the radio only plays what's popular right now.

To be fair, I do think "Kokomo" is a decent song. I put that bit in as a bit of a joke since I don't think there are that many popular bands whose entire output I openly despise (apart from Creed or The Vengaboys).

Indeed, I even like a bit of ABBA. Waterloo and Fernando are incredible songs, though some of their others, like say "Knowing Me, Knowing You" or "Ring Ring" are incredibly annoying. I put The Beach Boys in as an example of largely annoying bubblegum teen pop from that era.

Mainstream music is aimed at the massmarket. It's designed to be as bland and as palatable as possible for the widest range of people. It's like what MacDonald's is to food. In the same way that many kids turn their noses up at more gastronomically interesting food, interesting music requires a more mature and broader palate. That doesn't mean you don't mind the odd McD's, but it's not going to be riding high on your list of culinary delights.

This decade was full of to many music bands in horrible genres as well as ones which just plain sucked. Also the electronica fad got old fast- and the using old tunes from old songs fad.

I would say this generation is really talented people younger.. Of course GAF hates them but that doesn't matter..

Also remember that mainstream music is largely dictated by teenagers. I know I had pretty bad taste as a teenager, so it's not surprising when stuff like Limp Bizkit or Linkin Park gets popular over more worthy offerings.

Well let's have a look at a US top 10 from 50 years ago this week.

1. Duke Of Earl--------------------------Gene Chandler--Veejay (2)
2. Peppermint Twist----------------------Joey Dee & the Starliters--Roulette (1)
3. The Twist------------------------------Chubby Checker--Parkway (3)
4. Town Without Pity---------------------Gene Pitney--Musicor (5)
5. Dear Lady Twist-----------------------Gary U.S. Bonds--Le Grand (4)
6. Majestic/Wanderer--------------------Dion--Laurie (7)
7. If You Gotta Make A Fool Of Somebody--James Ray--Caprice (8)
8. Cottonfields----------------------------Highwaymen--United Artists (10)
9. Can't Help alling In Love/Rock-A-Hula Baby--Elvis Presley--RCA Victor (6)
10.I Know--------------------------------Barbara George--AFO (12)

Hmm, I'm guessing twisting was popular. And that Duke of Earl is a stone-cold classic. Pimpin'.

Well the kind of music I listen to still has many good stuff.

But pop/rock in general (IMO, remember) sucks ass since the late 90's. There isn't anything (good) like old Madonna, MJ, U2, etc to listen to today.

There is a lot of good music out there, but it's the kind of music that isn't played on radio very often. Black Eyed Peas is played on the radio often, but it doesn't mean they're good. (They used to be good, but not anymore.).

Bruno Mars just released his first album in October, and he's an amazing musician. Just this out: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkuoRGig4Cs

Yes.

Steve Knopper - Appetite for Self-Destruction (The Spectacular Crash of the Record Industry in the Digital Age)

After getting through that book it is hard to argue things are not worse overall. The consolidation that has happened the last 30 years and then the build up of short sighted stupid stuff in the 90s.

Not having read the book I might be way off base here, but how did the change in consumption of music have much bearing on overall quality?

How to get people to consume said music seems to be one of the issues I believe.. I never read it also tho..

The Black Eyed Peas halftime performance just killed this thread.

I haven't quite digested just how fucking awful it was. I really can't stand Will.I.Am's (sp?) auto-tune shit.

Consumption hasn't really changed since the boom of the CD, people were only listening to 1 or 2 songs on a 15 tack CD. It just now bypasses paying for the filler.

There was a couple notes about how a music producer and Bob Dylan thought the consumption through ear phones and computer speakers did sorta have a stealth change in making things more more more and louder.

That's definitely true. But also, the genres that are more favored: hip hop, techno, dance, etc. have a lot to do with that as well.

Oh yeah, definitely. It's easy for people like us who post on forums where we're constantly linked to youtubes of songs to point out that there's plenty of good stuff being made today, but a lot of people simply don't know how to go about such a thing. And I can say to them "Just go on the internet!", but it's not that easy... You do need some experience with that.

Then again one of the hotspots for grumpy people complaining about how old > new is Youtube. Thanks to this thread I was just now looking for Beach Boys youtubes, and I came upon this video for which the highest ratest comment is

# 11 on my top 100 songs of the 60s. To the 47 dislikes. Sorry that tis classic song does's sounds like the garbage you like today you call music. You're not true music fans that like the art & message it sends. You just like that sexy sound that makes money, which will end up in discount bin in 30 yrs. While this song will live on for years. If only you open up your eyes & ears to timeless classics like this song& appreciate it. Now Wouldn't It Be Nice .

So I guess some people just don't want to know. Or as Brian Wilson put it, stay in their safety zone.

edit: Fucked up the link. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ALaajR2Wcjk&feature=related is the fellow. But the other one works as well, unsurprisingly.

Music is better now.

My two favorite genres are experimental electronic music and classical music, but experimental electronic music, by the virtue of being digital, offers more potential for novelty and complexity.

If aliens ever visited this place, I'd have hoped it would have been that precise time. They would have scanned our broadcast channels, saw the halftime show, and 180'd the fuck out of our solar system.
