Let's talk about TREASURE more

Musashi Wins!

FLAWLESS VICTOLY!
A brief respite from E3 stuff.

Why don't people buy their games? More, I mean. I'll grant you that the stories are shit, but this is an evolution of the sort of game where story doesn't mean shit. Tons of games give you a crappy story and Treasure even makes a strange attempt here and there, but that's not the priority.

Often they do give you other features that people cream over...they have nice graphics for whatever platform their on, lots of unlockables and replayability. I'll grant you that some of their games are hard (is this the culprit) but their not all impossibly hard and even though you might get stuck on a particular stage for awhile, there's usually such madness exploding around you that it's not a problem. One Treasure level can often be more fun than 8-9 from Capcom. And I like Capcom. And I'm not even that good at hard games and these titles still give me joy.

What's the problem? No one bought Stretch Panic so that can't be what's keeping you away. Their having some of their best efforts on GBA and that's nothing to be sad about, but I can't help but feel that if their were any real sales going on around their titles they would come back to their proper home - consoles.

Ok, I'm just wanking around because the front page is all the same and I just got Sin & Punishment (which should be immediately ported to the DS, btw). You may hate shooters, etc. but you should get S&P, Guardian Heroes and the GBA games as soon as possible.

Pictures for better wanking:

Don't we all feel better now?

Exactly. Shhhh. Stretch Panic and Wario were made by...DigiPen students.

More Sin and Punishment love. Goddamn, great game. Perfect for DS.

What's with the ridiculously tiny pics? Anyway, Sin & Punishment rocks, as do the other games shown above. Can't wait to see more coverage of Gunstar Super Heroes at E3.

I wish I could answer this, but I'm blind to how they're seen by the average gamer. When I play a Treasure game, I see exuberant action design and bits of cleverness everywhere - in an animation, a mechanic, a boss, a piece of a level, a set piece or in an entire level. They are very good at what they do, even if their experiments don't always turn out right. I think their games are well-made and joyful and purely fun enough that anybody who hasn't played far too many 2D action games (like me) can enjoy them - so why don't more people? I wish I knew.

E3/next-gen wankthreads suck. IMPORT N64 SIN & PUNISHMENT OR DIE

you have encapsulated my whole feeling on the matter.

Also...it takes maybe 10 minutes to mod your N64. That's if you take your time.

Yes, Treasure most definitely is my favorite developer. I own nearly every Treasure US release (except Wario World) and most of their imports, and have shown them to people... Most of my friends think they're neat but they don't see the point in buying short "timekiller" games that'd take 45 minutes long when they can play 15-20 hours of the latest Max Payne game. Others just don't prefer the genre the games fall into, and see Treasure as an anachronism. Also, a lot of their best games are pretty hard to get ahold of - Guardian Heroes, Radiant Silvergun, Sin and Punishment, Bangai-O, Alien Soldier, etc.

Also, many their games have a really quirky sense of humor (Bangai-O, Silhouette Mirage, Stretch Panic), which not everybody "gets". Unfortunately, people can't look past the style of the game and get into their play mechanics (saying "This looks retarded!" and then picking up Halo 2 or generic military FPS #2972 to play or something)

Anybody know the best selling Treasure title, anyways, aside from Wario World?

What the... I just turned off Stretch Panic after testing it for the first time and I see a Treasure thread. Coincidence? I think not.

Impression from Stretch Panic: Biggest boobies ever. And you touch them. DS what?

You can always get a GameShark, too, if you don't wanna damage your system. Either way, if you own the N64, do yourself a favor and play the best game on the system :P

Wario World's not that bad... competent 3D platform/beu hybrid. Lacks the charm and creativity of the Wario Land series though, that's for sure.

Anyway, Treasure gameography!

I was under the impression that Treasure never makes sequels (of their own original titles that is). Therefore Sin & Punishment II is a bit farfetched. :/

I don't get these people who are clamoring for S&P on the DS. There's too few buttons, and I don't know how the current 4 face buttons and 2 shoulders can emulate the z-trigger shooting/R-shoulder jumping intensity. Using the L/R as jump/shoot just wouldn't cut it.

S&P is perfect enough as it is.

well, they didn't until they did Ikaruga, Gradius V, Advanced Guardian Heroes, and Gunstar Super Heroes.

heh, I was thinking the same thing.

Treasure definately deserves more attention than they get. I think one of the things really holding them back is the lack of working on a strong IP. Gradius is cool and all, but that game really only appeals to old school gamers who remember those games back from the NES and arcades. Give them a chance at a game like Castlevania and I'm sure they won't disappoint. I don't care if I can beat the game in a couple of hours if there's reason to go back and beat the game again and again. There's plenty of unlockable content they can add in to give people reason to want to play through it again.

Aside from playing it again just for the fun of it, anyway. Treasure are good at making games that are worth it for just this reason, but otherwise it seems to be out of fashion these days.

Yeah it's out of fashion, but it could be making a comeback. Especially w/games like RE4 where there's so much replayability. Honestly, when I sit down and play a game, I usually only play for an hour or two anyway. That's why a lot of their games are so good. I can beat it in one sitting but it's always something I want to play through over and over again. It seems to me they just need some help in marketing their games. They've more than proven themselves as quality game makers.

its just so easy to mod. really very simple. and there is something about having a modded n64 (especially for S&P), that feels so right. there is no excuse not to mod your n64 if you want to play an import.

thats what i love about Treasure.

there is some real charm to the games that they make. something that makes you want to come back for more. i love to turn on Radiant Silvergun and fine a Merry Bonus, or S&P to see how far i can get on one credit, or Advanced Guardian Heroes to try out a new character.

i have much love for Treasure games.

edit:

if you are a fan of Treasure games(and/or a fan of Sin and Punishment), check out the Treasure fanpage and forum here: http://www.mrmonkeyman.com/treasure/

download StrangenessDSS' S&P playthrough. it is inspiring. join the highscore comp too. even though my score sucks compaired to people who are great at the game, i still have fun trying. S&P is that good.

side topic:

Treasures use of controll scheme for different systems/controllers.

i think they have a good record for paying special attention to the controller that people are going to be using for the game they are making.

they usually seem to come up with something that works very well and makes good use of the controller in use.

Mischief Makers and Sin and Punishment are two good examples of this.

Aside from being on rails, S&P has the same controller setup as several other N64 fps. The MP:Hunters setup would be perfect for S&P. It's a good title to show of touch screen use. The game was never released in the U.S. The DS is lacking mature titles and shooters for that matter. I would think the cost of porting it would be pretty low. There's plenty of reasons to justify a port.

That summarizes my brief thought about it. Wrapped around the pure joy of having this game anywhere I am on the planet.

I always wanted Bangai-O, but that didn't happen.

Bangaioh fucking rules. i slightly prefer the n64 version myself.

it should be really cheap for an n64 import copy, right? i got my copy for 20$ a few years back.

actually, its a better example of a great controll scheme for an unusuall controller.

I think there is an image problem with the types of games they make, they appear old fashioned (Bangai-o). People need to actually play the games to understand why treasure are so good. Perhaps they fall at the first hurdle and don't get bought because of their appearence. I defy anyone to play through Gunstar, Ikaruga and Bangai-o and not enjoy it.

Honestly, one of the most underrated developers of all time.

If you're a shooter fan, and don't own or aren't planning to get these titles. Find a way to get them, you'll never regret it!

How does the N64 version compare to the DC version?

Stretch Panic was awesome. Very short, but huge fun, and (HELL YEAH) anti-aliasing on the PS2!!! Didn't reckon much to Guardian Heroes myself, but I love Gunstar Heroes so I'm looking forward to the upcoming GBA game. Gradius V is one of my favourite games in a long, long time also.

If you go to that fan site listed above, he goes through the differences. I remember that the Dreamcast version had the 400 Missle Madness that was missing in the N64, but it had it's own change too.

Did Bangai-o get re translated for the US version cos the EU version of this screen
bangaio035uy.jpg

reads "Hey, I can still.." not "I must be dreaming..."

djtiesto said:

there are some pretty major differences. enough so that owning both versions isnt that redundant.

the graphics: DC has far superior 2d backrounds with much more detail. the sprites seem larger and blockier on the n64. the DC version looks better, but the n64 version is still great 2d.

sounds: the DC version has more sounds and voices.

combos/scoring: there are some pretty big differences here. one of them being the way you charge your missle blossom attack thing. in the n64 version, you charge your attack by collecting space fruit left all over the levels. in the DC, the more you destroy, the more you charge.

the n64 version put more of a priority on collecting fruit.

there are other gameplay differences as well.

i prefer the n64 version because i enjoy the fruit collecting/charge system, and because of the controll setup, which i feel is far more comfortable, fun, and perfect for the game (it was designed on the n64).

other than that, the DC is way more slick, and has some really good extra content.

hm wierd. i didnt know that.

we get the quote about dreaming, but the picture was edited. they replkaces the KKK looking wierd thing, and they put diapers on the naked kid butt. :/

I just watched the full sin and punishment playthrough.

some points

1. Level design is unparalleled. The air craft carrier stage is just awesome.

2. Bosses are OMG. where the fuck do they get the ideas for these bosses??

3. Square >>>>>>> Cone

4. Wow.

I remember shelling out $80 for Sin & Punishment + adapter at Hyper Game Action in Torrance while E3 2001 was going on. Don't remember jack about that show, except that I brought that game home and played it to death.

Great graphics, awesome voice work, and fun as hell -- and an N64 game!

More Dynamite Headdy love!

More Treasureland Adventure love!

Sin and Punishment is probably my favorite action game ever. It's intense, has a brilliant design and is just so much damn fun to play.

Dynamite Headdy is a lot of fun.

I've never tried Treasureland, but I've heard mixed reviews.

I recently got Sin & Punishment off eBay for $50. The sucker is mint, perfect box, etc. The packaging is very nice...much nicer than a US N64 game of course. Game is so great, I just smile thinking about it.

YESSS, the aircraft carrier stage! Still impresses, even to this day. I need to d/l that playthrough, I can't find a reliable way to beat the
Polaris Missile
consistently since my timing isn't impeccable.

"Is that... the US Army?"
"No, the weapons maker that backed Brad sent that one in"

I love the dialogue too :P

I also got my copy from ebay at the same price. Too bad I can't play it since I don't have that uber-expensive import adapter which is the only option for us PAL'ers. I might buy a US n64 and mod that, but I'm not sure since it's only one game. I have played though, and I agree that it's pure awesomeness.

Oh, and my friend is an ass. He found S&P in a bargain bin in japan for about $1.5 :(

It's not just a matter of removing the piece as in the US version? Gawd, that sucks. If you can't find someone to ship you a N64 for a reasonable price, PM me. I could pick one up, I have the gamebit to open them up pretty fast as well.
