Thumb claw? lmao

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
I will never get over the foot claw. Never. So ridiculous.

That said, her Logan incarnation looks interesting.

Okay well, imagine it's 2013 and you're a fan of Runaways. There's a lot of them out there, you know? Very popular series, a cult following among Marvel fans, gonna be a TV show soon after being talked about for forever. People are always asking, "when are we getting another Runaways series? When's it coming back?" There hasn't been a Runaways series in like five years, when's it happening? Or imagine you're a fan of Avengers Academy, a not-as-but-still popular series that just ended after completing a three-year run. "What's gonna happen to those characters?", you're asking. Or maybe you're an X-23 fan, still upset that her solo series was canceled and now her supporting role gig in Academy is gone and you're wondering where she'll land next. She's gotta end up somewhere, right? They wouldn't just ignore her after this.

Marvel: "We're putting them all on an island where they'll kill each other until only one survives, in a blatant ripoff of Battle Royale."

Ouch. Understandably that didn't go over well with some people, especially once the series came out and those same people started butting heads with the folks who thought Arena was actually good. For poor Laura's part, she became a glorified plot device; "oh no, X-23's hopped up on trigger scent again! She's gonna kill us all!"
Yeah, I was a Runaways fan and also had an appreciation for Avengers Academy too. So seeing all of these characters dumped into a story designed to be a place where characters form cancelled series go to die was disheartening. I didn't even bother with it. How did it end? What happened to Chase and Nico?

Thanks for the lesson, I can definitely understand how some people may not appreciate their favorite characters being slaughtered one by one.

At least the Runaways made it all out in one piece.

Any time X23 comes up in a conversation my friend claims that her dad created the character in a unsolicited submission to Marvel and I just nod politely.

Millarness aside, I wish there were more books like NYX, showing non X-men dealing with mutant bullshit.
This is what kept me from NYX as a kid and I've never quite gotten over that first impression of the comic version. (I got into superhero comics watching X-Men: Evolution.)

If that was true, X-23 would have been vaporized a long time ago. Case in point Charcoal The Burning Man

NYX, along with Runaways, was one of the first series I picked up when I got back into reading comics. Love them both immensely, even if NYX feels like it was cut short even at 7 issues. For only a handful of main characters, it was pretty diverse as well, which was great. I'm sad they didn't do more with Kiden, whose power I found fascinating. Ah well.

X-23/Laura is one of my current favorite characters, and one of the few whose story I have read from the beginning (even catching her in X-Men Evolution, but not Wolverine and the X-Men). I am super pumped to see Logan because of her, even if Jackman wasn't basically the perfect Wolverine.

STOP SHITTING ON MY MOTHER'S HEADSTONE
Well like Harley, X-23 first appeared not in the pages of a comic book but on television screens, in a Saturday morning cartoon. She was created for the KidsWB series X-Men Evolution by writer/producer Craig Kyle, debuting in 2003 during the show's third season in an episode titled "X23."
Oh cool, I didn't know she started out as a children's cartoon character! How did they bring her into th-

In the third issue their group meets X-23, introduced as a nameless underage prostitute working for the ruthless pimp known as "Zebra Daddy."

Fucking comics.

Niiiiiiiiiiiiice.

Just to reinforce: Kyle and Yost X-Force is pretty awesome. Highly recommend.
"oh, a character from the cartoons that everyone likes? Okay. Let's bring her into the canon. She's a whore now."

Fuckin' Quesada.
Yeah that shit was stupid. X-23 becoming a prostitute didn't make sense to me. I recently read a bunch of her stuff through the X-23: Complete Collection Vol. 1 and NYX Complete Collection, and given where NYX is supposed to fit in the timeline, it doesn't make sense (though knowing it comes first makes more sense). She already had been going to high school for a (very short) period of time with her cousin, and she'd found Wolverine who told her to go to the school. Later she ends up in NYC and becomes a weird hooker?

Goddamn you Quesada! And then everyone ignored it except for Liu.

Yeah I did really like that aspect of it.

Yes, though it's mostly kept to All-New X-Men.

Chase became Darkhawk after getting his hands on the amulet, but gave it back at the end of the story.

Nico lost an arm and was killed. BUT, her staff resurrected her and gave her a new arm with magic powers.

There was a follow-up to Arena called Avengers Undercover in which the survivors banded together to infiltrate the Masters of Evil and kill Arcade in revenge. X-23 wasn't in it though, so my interest pretty much stopped once she was free and clear.

Supersonic, idiotic, disconnecting, not respecting, who would really ever wanna go and top that
I always forget than X-23 was actually introduced in X-Men Evolution. I think she cropped up right around the time I stopped watching the show regularly. The majority of my exposure to her is from the 2007 series, Marvel vs Capcom 3, and All New Wolverine. She's actually a good character. Wasn't a big fan of her at first 'cause the premise of a female teen angst driven Wolverine is pretty groan-worthy, but she's grown on me over the years. I really like how writers have expanded on her motivations, especially more recently.

Awesome, but man. Sometimes Ramos is great, but other times he gets rushed or something and it all goes bad.
A lot of the more stylized artists are like that, sadly. Madureira, Stegman, Bachalo, etc. Just the downside of that style.
Gabby > Laura

She needs to show up in a book without Laura before that can be said. Right now she feels like she exists to be more upbeat in contrast and to be a sort of conscience to Laura. I need to see her in a book without where she isn't just that. Just take all the young female characters and stick them in a book: Moon Girl, Nadia Pym, Ms. Marvel, Naja, and Gabby. I'd roll with that.

That's not to say I don't like Gabby. I do, and she's great, but she needs to spend some time outside.

Each of the sisters represent a different aspect of Laura's personality with Gabby representing the innocence that was taken away from her and represents who should could have been if not for the stuff in the OP.

I remember watching her debut and her second appearance on that show and loving the character. Little did I know...

Excellent OP, looks like I have some catching up to do!

Side note: I mained X-23 / Deadpool / Shuma in UMvC3 before I dropped it. If I were to play again, X-23 would for sure be on the team again.

Right, but it doesn't change what I'm saying, and that is the fact that I can't agree on her being better than Laura until I see her somewhere that isn't with Laura.

I wasn't disagreeing with you. Personally I want to see Gabby end up in a school book once Taylor is done with her.

When she was actually introduced in the comics wasn't her original profession a bit more warped than prostitution, namely those who came to her knew that she had a special talent....basically they were into the whole slice and dice thing. Mainly on themselves, not fatally, some cutting fetishist.

As for Gabby, she really seems to be the Laura from the new Logan movie to me. Probably how she came about in a way.

I'd be just as thrilled. Stick her with the other weird Xavier students that don't fit. Gabby is a clone of test tube baby that was a partial clone (closer to a daughter). You also have characters like Broo (special, one in a maillion type of Brood), Kid Gladiator (Gladiator's son), Warlock (technoorganic mutant from another planet), Kid Apocalypse (test tube baby reincarnation of En Sabah Nur). Maybe that monk kid from Old Man Logan. I'm sure there's a couple others. Like a misfit class, basically.

Remember when X-23 wrecked Lady Deathstrike? Pretty great.

What issue/run is this from?

I know i own that issue but cant remember which it was from.

Also how is Avengers Arena? Do I need to read anything before it? Ive been interested in checking it out since its basically Battle Royal. Need to check and see if its up on MU

You can just jump into Avengers Arena, though you likely won't have as much attachment to the characters if you haven't read Runaways and Avengers Academy. It's on MU for sure.

It's from one of the New X-Men issues of Messiah CompleX, which I believe was being written by Craig Kyle and Chris Yost at the time which lead into their run on X-Force with X-23, Wolfsbane, Warpath, and Wolverine.

I really like the all-new Wolverine book but my only problem with it is that Tom Taylor cannot write villains

As evidence by how completely he messed up Taskmasters personality, habits, and looks (though that might be on the artist)

But Alchemax were morons, the oneoffs were mindless threats, and Kimura has always been one dimensional

Good series though and Gabby is love

Ye boy

I am very very critical of Taskmaster's portrayals

But even if I wasn't, ANW's was the worst in a very long time

He doesn't like taking jobs against mutants (or their clones), wouldnt shoot an obvious child (Gabby), avoids anything related to the Wolverine name like the plague, inexplicably wasn't even trying in their fight, and didn't just disengage, all for a single moment of 'lol foot claw'

No issues with Task losing fights, just part of the deal when you like villains, but he was just completely out of character, weirdly serious and depressed, and completely unprofessional not even checking if they were breathing before confirming a kill

They didn't even get his hair and eye color right, they just made him look like his daughter

Aaaa this will bug me forever

On a more positive note god bless this run for portraying Laura as cool headed, focused, and mature. So much better than the teen angst of All New XMen
