Limited Run Games - Putting digital games into your hands

So, word of warning:

I may have found a game-breaking bug on B&C Deadline. I am still loving the game and now I'm going back to explore additional dungeon floors before proceeding, but there's a point in the game where a character does not spawn and I cannot proceed with the story. More concerning is that the trophy statistics for beating this mission I'm on is at 0%, so I'm afraid that it might be a general bug :(

I hope the patch can take care of this as well. I imagine it's not a super hard fix, since it's just one character that consistently disappears in a combat scenario.

The game keeps getting better, too, so it sucks to be stuck right now!

I wonder why it was decided to give Breach & Clead Deadline a physical print along with the digital release instead of doing exactly what other publishers are doing and releasing the digital version first, fixing anything that comes up and releasing the physical print after everything's been taken care of.

Finally got Soldner X today (Portugal). Thankfully the package label didn't have any strange characters and it arrived safely. This was my first LRG purchase and probably the last for some time until the next game that interests me...

I actually enjoy the scramble to get everything and check out as fast as possible

Looking forward to Friday, one of each game for me

You'll love it until you miss one, then it's the worst thing ever, trust me :P

(I've literally started organizing my work day around the first batch, so I get two chances these days!)

At first I assumed the LRG releases were day-and-date as part of the proof-of-concept of the idea, but increasingly that doesn't seem to be the case. I hope Elephant in the Room for Vita doesn't ship with a load of bugs. And any of the Sekai games they're working on.

I don't think it's too much of a problem, it's nice to get the game the day it releases.

But at the same time, these are meant to be archival in a way, right? So it's kind of a bummer if there are big issues that need to be patched.

Yeah, it's supposed to be physical so that we can play them at any point in the future, but if the patches aren't directly on disc, then there's no point :x
Hope this kind of situation will be rare ^^

Oh, and I was thinking about only buying Shadow Complex on Friday (not too worried this time judging by the size of the batch), but I'll try to grab a Vita RM at the same time. If the game doesn't please me I guess I'll have no problem reselling it !

Yeah, I heard about the separate listing for the Rainbow Moon CD. Not sure if that will go live the same day, or another one.

I heard though it’s the same one Eastasiasoft sold on their website a couple of years back, they are just giving LRG their remaining stock. I already have the CD, so it’s not something I will try for.

But I do recommend to those that do not have it, to pick it up. Rainbow Moon as a great OST.

Makes sense of it ends up being the old stock. Well, my priority is getting the games first. Don't want the Vita copy selling out while I'm fiddling around!

I'm sure most readers missed the initial thread from yesterday, but Play-Asia has pinned the American physical release of Wild Guns: Reloaded for November 15th. You might want to keep an eye out for any potential listings from your favorite retailer(s) in the process unless some exclusivity deal comes into play.

So many digital only games, so few discs :o
Speaking about rpg Maker, I just found out the physical To The Moon PC release was DRM free ! Never heard of Yume Nikki and Mad Father before. What kind of games are they ? :)
Both titles could be described as survival horror productions with notably different approaches to the genre. Admittedly, I can't quite comment upon Mad Father since I've never played it, but it does follow a familiar structure from bit-based adventures with a split focus between puzzle-solving segments and visual novel-esque sequences that drive the narration. On the other hand, Yume Nikki is a highly influential slice of freeware that serves as an atmospheric dream simulator with preference toward minimalism and ambiguity in the handful of events that you stumble across in exploration. When I originally finished the game several years ago, I felt disappointed with the seemingly lack of content for such a small experience that strives upon oneiric design. You have a specific set of looping locales that interconnect, but it successfully replicates the feeling of disorientation with your surroundings through clashing art aesthetic. I walked away mostly indifferent to its odd world yet I've continuously thought about the clever usage of looping techniques and engrossingly simplicity of its design. All of them lend to a palpable achievement in capturing the almost dreadfully whimsical nature of our dreams and I honestly want to vindicate my first perception with obtaining a physical print in some form. I don't find it shocking that practically every subsequent release from RPG Maker at the time shamelessly stole its framework. I doubt I'm making any sense with my fleeting thoughts so I would recommend checking out this article from Hardcore Gaming 101 to gain clarity into the mindset of Yume Nikki. A simple internet search of the game would be the equivalent of Pandora's Box in regard to spoilers and it's best to dive in completely blind so that you can cherish the discoveries. However, it can become downright dull with the lack of guidance so feel free to seek a spoiler-free walkthrough to find any oddities that you haven't uncovered in your own travels. Just know that an actual ending does exist on the chance you're worried there isn't an end goal. I hope my words manage to convey an idea of it at the least.

Found out in LRG's stream today that Shadow Complex will release it's OST separately on Friday, similar to Rainbow Moon.

So will be another tab I will need to keep open.

I think 'no point' is an overstatement. Better to have a buggy physical edition than to have a game be stuck digital only.

I agree though, hopefully it doesn't come up much.

At least the physical copy for Rainbow Moon will have all the updated patches on it. Although the game was never really buggy persay with the exception of minor aspects. The biggest issue being the weapon bug for Serena, but nothing gamebreaking.

I have to say, eastasiasoft's releases have been the highest quality so far. DLC included, new trophies. The extra work to make the release special is much appreciated and I hope others take notes.

You can see from the Solder demand that they're doing something right (although it being a good game helps too)

I just started Soldner, it's so good to have everything included, and with new trophies to boot :)

Yes you're right, I got too far :x
But hopefully it won't happen too often. Buggy games like Assassin's Creed Unity will suffer from that when someone tries to play them offline/patchless in the distant future.

I'll think about you then ;)
(though I need to secure a copy in the first place ^^)

Call me intrigued ! Thanks for the introduction, I'll definitely check it out :D

Mine displayed that message yesterday - the same day the game arrived.

Thanks for answering, that message was displayed for me yesterday but it haven't arrived, it's just that I would love to have the games today or tomorrow as I go on holidays and would like to see the games.

The tracking number should update further to confirm when the game is out of for delivery. Hopefully that should update again in a day or so :)

Fingers crossed furthermore with the problems the fullfillment center has caused with this batch thus I want to check everything is fine.

For those who already have the games(europe) in the tracking when does it show you the message "departed terminal location"?

Not sure it's the same for every country, but my tracking number was also the number for the local delivery company. When the package arrived here, their website was updated immediately and it was much quicker in displaying the status of the package.

Soldner still costs a fortune. Please tell me they will reduce a bit in price at least.

I'm wanna say not by much. I expect $100ish will be the norm. Game was way too hyped up for what it was. Most people that didn't get a copy now want a copy and will probably pay whatever for it. Regardless of best judgement. Check back in a few months when the next big hyped title hits and... maybe you can score one for a reasonable price. Whatever your reasonable is.

Also, I assume they are people out there inflating the prices to take advantage of the hype.

Yay, my Soldner arrived yesterday and even came with a pretty postcard!

Also has an actual instruction manual, which is much appreciated. I'm happy this one didn't get stuck in my country's customs. Octodad did and I'm still waiting for it to clear. Sigh.

I doubt it, those of us who missed it because of site problems (or just generally missed it for whatever reason) are going to just have to hope some spare copies become available and then hope to get lucky enough to get one of those. As annoying as it is now missing a game from the collection I'm not spending over the odds on a copy and giving someone a nice profit on something they had no interest in other than selling instantly.

Hopefully I'll be able to grab a copy of each game tomorrow but I'm a little worried about it after last time now.

Agreed.

I’ve really liked what I’ve played of Eastasiasoft/SideQuest Studios, I hope they are around for a long time.

I know the game isn’t for many, but I love Rainbow Moon and really looking forward to Rainbow Skies. And I hope to see more in the franchise.

It might once more international orders start arriving and people chuck 'em on eBay.

Fingers crossed. I really really want a complete collection but at the same time I'm on a very tight budget so I'll take a chance and await a possible price drop.

I'm a bit worried myself but this time there's no breach & clear for vita acting as a diversion (I fell for it).

One thing that bothers me a little bit is that the post cards don't fit in the Vita cases... so then I end up with this nice card, but nowhere to keep it.

Agreed on the manual, that always makes the whole package more delightful.

Count me as another person who really appreciates having a manual. Once something that was expected in games is now unfortunately a luxury.

I would love to see more LRG releases that include manuals. It was actually be great to see maybe collector editions eventually. We have gotten the OST a few times now, but also maybe a world map included with an RPG and/or a small artbook.

The only issue is that it’s really a developer decision, and something they have to create. It’s not something LRG does. The only motivation would be is if LRG is willing to front the cost on making the collectors editions, like they front the costs in doing the physical games now.

Vita games with manuals are so exceedingly rare that the weight of the Xeodrifter Vita case throws me off every time. It makes games feel much more "premium".

Looking through the manual in bed on the evening after getting a new game was a tradition for me as a kid. You'd always learn something interesting. I really miss it.

*nods*

I was one who always read the manual first when purchasing the game, still do when they have one.

Would read the manual, look over the world map and item/spell fold-outs. Absorb the game as much as I could before starting it.

So it’s disappointing now when I open a case now and all I see is a disc.

I'd be curious how much production of a manual actually costs (ignoring the time to design it)

Can't be more than a dollar or two right?
I’ll be honest, I would be willing to pay the little bit extra if it meant we received a decent-sized, color manual.

Yeah that's why I'm asking? $27 instead of $25 for including a manual? Sure. Not sure how much more I'd be willing to pay though

Honestly, I’m not really sure what the extra cost would be. But I would be willing to pay a few dollars extra if it meant we could get a manual.

Your time scared the shit of me. I saw only 33 seconds and thought it was today for a second.

Edit: Now it says 23 hours. At first it just said 33 seconds left. lol

For those here whom have played Rainbow Moon, and enjoyed it, what is the amount of hours you’ve put into it?

RM has the most hours I’ve put into any game, and I’ve done it twice. The first time was around 360 hours and the second time close to 300, although I’m not as far into the game compared to the first time through.

I don't read manuals nowadays so to me it doesn't matter if it's included or not. They could definitely raise the price of the vita games though and maybe increase the print number for vita games as well? Have any LRG release for vita ever had a problem selling out?

To be honest, I find $25 dirt cheap for a Vita game. They could easily charge $30 and wouldn't sell any less.
I kinda feel like that too. I think a price raise to 30 would be cool; more money for LRG to keep making amazing things happen, and no significant impact to my wallet. If it meant more manuals for example, that'd be awesome.

Even a minor price increase will turn some people away though. I don't think it would stop them from selling out of inventory, but who knows. Seems difficult to work out the full effect it'd have.

I think it's not so much about actually reading them but more about the love and effort that publishers put into it. I was really impressed when I opened my copy of Shovel Knight (PS4), which has a 40+ pages manual. Of course I won't read all of it but it's a love letters to collectors. In contrast, almost all NA Vita games come without a manual or even inlay, which makes the case feel pretty empty when you open it.

Holy shit. Fallout 4 is my most played game at 270 hours. To have over 600 into something though? That's dedication.

I haven't been interested in Rainbow Moon after having watched some videos of it. Maybe you're the right person to tell me why I should reconsider?

Thinking about giving Shadow Complex a shot. I think the last metroidvania I really enjoyed was the recent Strider reboot, though the combat in SC kind of reminds me of Intrusion 2 (PC Flash game).

I will have to admit, it is not a game necessarily for everyone. It is very much ‘old school’ in many aspects. Very challenging, turn based, heavy grinding (for Hard difficulty) and the story is pretty much non-existent.

But if you are fine with all of that, then Rainbow Moon is for you. I actually am fine with grinding and do it usually in my RPGs, so it was nothing new in Rainbow Moon for me. And I found it very addicting, always wanting to do one more battle, or explore one more area.

The game is very challenging. I played Hard mode (there is Normal and Hard), but I have heard by many that Normal is still very challenging. I am just fine with that. I like that if you don’t prepare yourself, you are going to get the crap kicked out of you by that boss (or even a normal enemy sometimes).

You need to work for your coins (gold). Money doesn’t come easy, it only drops in bags during combat, there is no assurance of ‘x’ amount of gold with every combat. The other way to get funds is to sell off drops and do quests. I like it because I have found myself in most RPGs buying what I need, and then having piles of gold left over. You will always have things to buy in RM. A combination of funds not easy to get and equipment gets to be quite expensive. I love it as it’s something else that gives me something to work towards.

A lot will complain that it is a game that feels like you are moving too slowly. Gaining levels, gold and enemies being too challenging. And it is true in a lot of respects compared to more current RPGs, it is by no means a fast moving game. But I also find it extremely addicting and making me want to come back for more. The post-game is one of the better ones, IMO. Lots to do.

So if any of that sounds appealing to you, give it a shot. The best suggestion I can give you is try the demo. It is an hour long and you can find it on the PSN. And it’s free.
