[Linked In] Darrell Gallagher is leaving Xbox

Not really.

This is not COD that sells 10M on Xbox, 15M on PlayStation, and over 5M on PC.

At the time of Remake and Rebirth's release, there just wasn't an audience for the game beyond PlayStation that would make it worth it to turn down the exclusivity deal and marketing support they had received from Sony. On top of that, Final Fantasy XV was so fucking bad that it damaged the public perception of the series in the West even to this day.

We'll see how Remake does on Switch 2 though.

And they ended up repeating the same mistake with the Final Fantasy franchise exclusivity deal

Always with this "sony too", only to later have the false equivalence disproved.

I first knew of him when he worked at Crystal Dynamics. I was a fan of his TR work. Here is a post of mine from four years ago.

Of course, I was obviously wrong about it being a shitshow. lol
What's the magic you talk about there from the CD days? TR2013 was criticized for being too heavily influenced by Naughty Dog's style in Uncharted and many disliked Rise of the Tomb Raider.

Every game has detractors, but that doesn't mean they represent the majority. Gallagher's TR games were well received and sold well. Not much of a mystery why Microsoft was keen on hiring Gallagher to reboot Perfect Dark like he did Tomb Raider. Just didn't work out for whatever reason.

Oh poop. I know its not an often shared opinion on here but I enjoyed the tomb raider trilogy!

I think that opinion is shared more than you realize. Problem is SE inserted itself into console war controversy with ROTR and that had a lasting negative legacy on the franchise. That doesn't mean the games weren't good though.

Would have been much better without the bloat, the uninteresting collecathon/fetch quests open parts and the ton of NPCs. A more focused adventure, shorter, without all the BS, useless pickups etc...

Too bad because they succeeded at everything else in my opinion. Great gameplay, visuals, some excellent tombs etc... But nope, you need to endure the bloat between two fantastic sections.

Far larger install base to sell the games on. If the deal was good, Square could afford to take the hit of missing a very small number of possible sales on Xbox. Both TR and FF are far more associated with PlayStation. To a lesser extent with modern TR, but definitely still the case when it comes to FF.
I know everyone shits on Xbox, but there still are 30 million+ users. Potentially a lot of sales.

Looking at his track record on Linkedin, he worked on a ton of games at many big name companies. Especially lots of Tomb Raider stuff.

But when it came to The Initiative for 7 years. Zero.

Funny thing, his job at MS probably paid him the most too. And he produced the least. Actually produced nothing. It's like that pro athlete who gets the biggest contract in his career. And then performs the worst.

Im always fascinated by these guys that work years and years with a team of devs that are not even able to release a game, yet they are always so proud of what they acomplished.

That's a creative job kind of ego. When they release a shit product or no product at all, it's still somehow the greatest job ever. They got huge egos thinking because they make a game or movie, they are so much more clever and higher rung on the ladder nothing they do can go bad.

I dont get a sense a guy working on Wall St blabs like this. If a guy gets nailed losing the company millions or billions(!) in bad trades, I dont think the guy goes on Linkedin saying he's proud of himself and the team for sinking the company with some bad work.

But a video game guy will some reason.

But to be fair, they probably got to do a last ditch dog and pony show message, so it "should" help his job prospects next time. If he says nothing and everyone knows he worked at a shit studio he'll probably get ignored. But tag on one of those cheesy PR quips and maybe a recruiter gives him a brownie pt for looking like a swell guy even though he helped sink an entire studio.

Ah, thanks, that makes sense.
