LittleBigAgendas: Why didn't the mass market overlook LBP?

The pictures show that in fact the number of plays is clearly neither number of persons or PSN accounts. It's obviously, literally, number of plays. There is very little chance only 11,000 out of nearly 800,000 who have played the level have 'favorited' it.
I am quoting this again since i just tried to play my sister's level again and i see that the number of plays went up. I was pretty sure that the number of plays didnt go up earlier when i tried to play her level more than 1 time in a row, but it might have been due to that i played 2 player with my sister and that she was the host (if you play your own levels then the play count wont go up (unless there is some lag on the server that doesnt update the number of plays at once), i just checked that myself. You can however heart your own levels :)) or that i overlooked something earlier. In this case, that level that had i.e over 700.000 plays might be played several of times by several of same users indeed. I am sorry for the missunderstanding!

EDIT: I fixed a typo :)

anyone notice how many instances of "Playstation" is on the cover?

1 to tell you this particular game is in fact compatible with Playstation 3. 1 to tell you there is ONLY a Playstation version available. 1 to tell you this game does indeed have ties to Playstation Network.

In other words, they think their customers are idiots.

Technically I think there are 3, which is no more than my Halo 3 box. Unless you count the logos, in which both would have 4. No point in being this nitpicky.

Speaking from a retail standpoint, I haven't sold a single copy of LBP in over two weeks and I work almost every day. It's so strange. At work we always talk it up whenever someone asks about it, but nobody seems to bite.

Wait, I did sell one today at last, to a girl. But still. We got in about 70 copies at launch, and still haven't sold out of that shipment.

Nah, there are enough developer created levels as well as community ones that you can play and have a blast w/out even touching the level creator once. Almost anyone who has played the game can tell you that.

See this is the problem, if a poster on GAF is naive enough not to know that there's a story mode and thousands of user levels to download, then what hope is there for the average consumer?

Damn, I smell a lot of presumptuous bull in this thread.

edit: Why don't we start using -censored and for good reason - as a source while we're at it. :\

First of all I think this game will sell to a degree. If they can sell Heavenly Sword they can sell LBP.

Secondly does any one agree with me that LBP's price point is too high? It should be a $40 game game, or at least a $50 one with more tie in/coupon deals. Nintondo do that alot with their heavy hitters. There was bestbuy/TRU deals for Twlight Princess and SMG.

I see there are some cross promotion with Amazon but I think there can be more. And it's such a family friendly game it should be cheaper. Hell my brain can't explain to me why LBP is being sold at a premium and HOME is free, which to me as a casual PS3-only gamer, push pretty much the same thing, which is community gaming. If HOME give me more freedom to create presistance shit in my own "aprtment", ain't I getting the same kind of sand box enjoyment I am getting from of LBP's user generated content?

Also, anyone remember when LBP was announced way way back in GDC, it was supposed to come out in download only first and then disc based later? Which is GT's model. Why isn't it out in PSN? Obviously they don't want to sell it at $40 and lose the money. This is no good. Sony can't money pinching their long term game. I think this is a wrong move. LBP should be like HOME, install on as many PS3 hard drive as possible.

Umm no, why should it be $40 when it offer so much more than alot of other games?

It's a bad thing the game it comes with is a game from 1985.

Ok, that one was just for laughs.
You know that juniors are on an incredibly short leash around these parts, don't you?

Well, you do now.

Family friendly games need to be to budget priced on hardcore consoles, regardless of the value. MS understands this, Sony should too.

If the price was derived from what a game offers, oh man, that would be awesome. All those $10 games!

Just because MS has changed their strategy doesn't necessarily mean that Sony should follow.

I'm not entirely sure if their $40 pricing for Viva Pinata 2 and Banjo is a good move for them (in the sense that it will spur tremendous sales for either title). I don't see either title pushing a whole lot of units, and it seems to me that these games cater to a hardcore subset of the Xbox audience that would likely buy it for $60 regardless.

I do not see Banjo coming near LBP's sales this holiday season, even at a price that is heavily discounted.

Still won't change the price of the PS3 though. MM is stuck between a rock and a hard place in terms of getting through to the mainstream. Still put together a great game though; and I've been more than satisfied with the purchase.

Loudninja said:
Are those games selling at that price point?

Nope, and they'd be selling even worse at $60.

Agreed. But $60 on top of that is adding insult to injury.

Because (unfortunately) platformers are niche these days. Games with guns and cars always sell better, and the best way to get people to TRY something and realize just how awesome it is, is to come in at a lower price point. 40$ gets the game under some trees when parents are thinking "well maybe we can afford just one more game." etc...

I hate to say it, but LBP is not a game you can sell without people experiencing it. You can't just show a few videos or some footage on TV and have someone go "That looks neat." It needs to be experienced firsthand and a lower price point helps that word of mouth. Katamari Damacy is a great example of the lower pricepoint/ word of mouth model.

One last thing to mention is that the Monty Python-esque European aesthetics don't appeal to everyone. I enjoy the visual style but I can hardly say it's mainstream.

I'm sure it's been said somewhere in this thread, but Sony should bundle LBP with the console. Once everyone has it, there will be so much demand for the sequel. That's why Wii Sports Resort will sell probably 10 million copies...well, maybe not that many. But close.

Still, I want to see what happens with November and December NPD. Could be a big Christmas seller. If I had a PS3 I'd want it for Christmas.

LBP is selling at that price point, that's why i don't get this logic.

And LBP would be selling far better at $40, that's the only point. I still think there should be a PSN version as well, to guarantee "shelf space" going forward.

'Far better' is questionable.

Better, ABSOLUTELY. better enough to make up for the lost $20? Probably not.

Forgive me if this has been mentioned already, but here are my thoughts. 1) It's on a platform that has an image of "teh mature," while it's presentation has much less baditude than Ratchet and Clank, much less God of War. 2) Platformers without recognizable mascots are hard to sell. Quality of game matters much less than the cast of characters. Look at recent Crash Bandicoot games for an example of that.

The existence of this humongous thread really does boggle my mind, though. It's waaaaaaaaaaay too early to talk about this game's sales, except to say that based on the data we do have, the game is not a 'bomb' in any sense of the word, nor is it a 'megahit'.

Where it falls between those two extremes, we're going to have to wait a while to find out. It's all premature as hell until then.

I think it's because it doesn't have big manly dudes shootin' stuff and bein' manly. That's the reason I didn't buy it, at least.

Seriously though, didn't the game just come out? It's a bit early for this, no?

Wow. The OP is nothing more than a troll. I feel dirty for even having to point that out. Pathetic.

Obviously, especially when he compared LBP to ET as one of the biggest gaming bombs of all time.

You know, "his" username is CowGirl. Are you calling the OP by the wrong gender just to be insulting because you don't like the content of the thread? Pretty classless and taking things a bit too far if true, imo.

I agree with this. If cowgirl wants to be referred to as female then that's his right.

I fucking love you, you know that.
I'm still puzzled by the thread though, I think that the game will definitely have legs and it's too early to tell imo. There's nothing more I want that the mass market gobbling up this game, because it deserves as much sales as it can get. Definitely a breath of fresh air and creativity for me as well as my friends.
