Liveblog thread for 3DS new Nintendo IP announcement (Code Name STEAM)

In the end of the Nintendo Direct you briefly see Miyamoto's 3DS with Pikmin stickers on it.

Pikmin 3DS will be the announcement.

Exciting times! Particularly pumped about the 3DS game news since I don't have a Wii U right now.

There's a few common possibilities that have been thrown around on this thread: Metroid, Mother, and Majora's Mask. Coincidentally, Earthbound, Majora's Mask, and Super Metroid are all in my top five games of all time, so if a game from any of these IPs gets announced, I'll be ecstatic.

A new 2D Metroid has been wanted by tons of people. The rumored/cancelled (?) Metroid Dread has been the dream of many and that would be absolutely brilliant if they announced it or something similar. The only "hint" we have received is that Reggie will be wearing a Metroid-related pin tomorrow (he wore a Mario one today). Maybe he just likes the look of it, but I guess you could count that as a clue.

An Earthbound Trilogy would honestly be the best thing Nintendo has done in years, in my opinion. Earthbound is my favorite game of all time and I love the other two. Whether it's a complete remake or a set of ports, there's no way a collection couldn't turn out to be incredible. In the Nintendo Digital Event video, as many before me have said, Reggie "burns" an audience member demanding Mother 3. It's notable that the same fan requested Star Fox, and look what we got. It's also notable that the segment was created by Robot Chicken, a comedy series. Maybe they just created the joke because they're... comedians. I guess Nintendo could've told them to say that on purpose, but I don't know. Reggie said in the IGN thing regarding Mother 3 that they let fans know they are aware of such demands and he wasn't going to make any announcements. So, Earthbound Trilogy? Hopefully.

Majora's Mask 3D. The most likely contender. Grezzo has been quiet for awhile now. Majora's Mask used a ton of OOT's assets so it wouldn't be too much of a task, like creating a brand new game. There has been the ALBW MM tease, magazine (I think) teases, and now today, Zelda Williams' tease. That Zelda holding Majora's Mask is a pretty big hint, in my opinion. It looks professionally made. Maybe she knows someone really good at designing things like that, who knows. The main issue with the idea of Majora's Mask being announced is that how are they going to spend 90 minutes talking about it? Many people have played Majora's Mask and know what OOT is so they have an idea of what a Majora's Mask remake would be like.

Personally, I hope it to be a Mother Collection, but that "tease" was just most likely a lighthearted joke from Robot Chicken. As I said earlier, if it's any of the three titles above, I'll be ecstatic.

Can't help but get excited thinking it might be Metroid....

.....then I remember that this is Nintendo, who patently over hypes announcements, almost by accident as if they don't realize the power of the suspense they create.

I would accept MM3D as a consolation. I guess.

At this point I'm open to whatever. Nintendo already surpassed my expectation with today's announcements so any thing else is just gravy.

i'm thinking at this point it has to be majora's mask 3d. the constant teasing of it over the course of a year just seems like overkill at this point without a reveal, unless the wii u zelda is actually the origin story of termina or a sequel to majora's mask for some reason.

I think the event will focus on one unannounced 3DS game, but I feeling that we'll get some causal new reveals from that event. Like suddenly showing off a Mother Trilogy for 3DS as well as a new localized game like DQVII

If for some reason that was true, then Majora's Mask 3DS would make even more sense.

Seriously, if it is MM3DS, that'd make E3 for me right there.

Would Nintendo really spend ~90 minutes, or whatever it was scheduled for, on an enhanced up-port of a 14-year-old game, for a portable platform that appears to be entering its last real year of first party support?

I mean, don't get me wrong, Majora's Mask is my favorite Zelda, but it would be a really weird move unless it's a much bigger deal than a simple upport or they really just want to cater to Zelda fans without stealing attention from the other two Zelda games.

Hmm... three Zelda games at E3 is a bit overkill.

it could be a straight majora's mask sequel utilizing a lot of the same concepts too, not unlike luigi's mansion dark moon. and maybe they would include majora's mask 3d for newcomers. it's the 3d zelda that would probably work best with the handheld format given how the save function works.

it would certainly be a lot of zelda though- i agree about that. metroid seems like another frontrunner in terms of small teases. it's also something that may work best on handhelds.

I legit can not even fathom what they could talk about for 90 minutes if it's just one game.

I suspect that just like the Smash Bros. roundtable (if this uses a similar format), there will be a significant amount of time for Q&A and it may end 10-15 minutes before scheduled.

I'm coming to the dangerous conclusion this is either Metroid Dread (or, a different hypothetical 2D Metroid game on DS) - or something Earthbound (picking up on the Mother 3 joke from the Digital Event).

I just don't see what else justifies 90 minutes.

Wow, MM 3D or anything to do with Mother would be the greatest thing I could ever imagine. Not interested in anything else, unfortunately :/

Metroid would be rad, but it's probably Majoras Mask or some other game I don't care that much about.

Majoras Mask is pretty good, but I've already played that game.

Can't imagine this is Mother-related. I cannot see them dedicating a 90-minute roundtable to a Mother compilation--or any compilation, really.

Hope Mother 3 is announced in some form. I consider their joke in the Digital Event to be a giant cocktease if it isn't. But I'm pretty sure it's not this game.

I'd be okay with that.

Oh I agree, but the durations I would've expected fit within ~45 mins; maybe 1 hour tops. (15 min Q&A either way).

But true about ending it early. I had not considered that. Whatever it ends up being, I hope it's exciting!

We've known about this for a long time. Most people think it is a new Metroid.

However that seems way too long to talk about one game.. What if it talked about many 3DS games?
I've lost faith in a new Metroid gaming coming anytime soon. I suspect this is Majora's Mask which has been hinted at so many times that I've no doubt it's in development. We have yet to hear what the 'big' Nov/Dev title is for 3DS this year, I reckon this will be it. As much as people want it, I'd like to see a new Metroid.

yes, please a new hunters.

But sadly a crosshair shooter doesn't work in 3D. Everyone who played the Sea Monster Fight in Resident Evil Revelations saw that. Laser Targeting is the only way to do aiming properly. It's the reason why we don't have any FPS on 3DS. Has anyone tried Moon Chronicles?

I'm sure Majora 3D is being worked on but we had a lot of Zelda already this E3, they might save that unveiling for later in the year.

I hope it's a 2.5D Metroid game.

I just like to have a 2D sequel to super metroid with 3d layers.
It would fit the 3D stereographic.

And yes i don't find metroid other m a true sequel. (by far not)

Pokken
STEAM
Majora's Mask 3D
Metroid Dread

I'd be happy if it turns out to be one of those (especially Metroid)
