Liverpool FC striker Diogo Jota dies at 28

IDKFA

I am Become Bilbo Baggins
RIP Jota.

Died in a car crash in Spain.

The guy was 28, just got married and was in his prime. A great professional for club and country.

His brother, Andre Felipe, also died in the crash, which happened at around 00:30 local time (23:30 BST).

The car, a Lamborghini, left the road due to a tyre blow out while overtaking another car. The car set on fire, and both are confirmed to have died.

Shit this is sad news. He was young and talented. RIP.

Edit: how does a tyre just burst man? I've read this happens quite a lot with super cars, even when they're not being driven at ridiculously high speeds?

I don't know even know what to say. This is hurting me a lot, one of my favourite players. I'm devastated. I might request a temp ban.

What hurts the most is he didn't even get to enjoy his married life and his three young kids.

If I ran a football club, I'd ban players from driving fast cars. Just assign them a chauffeur and insist he drives them everywhere. They have plenty of time for risky shit after they retire at 35 or whatever, but for insurance purposes while they're still playing I'd rank sports cars alongside base jumping and free diving as things that are temporarily off the menu.

I'm sure there was a player (Man Utd?) who was told to get rid of his Ferrari after they traced his leg injuries back to the stiff clutch.

Even if the car can be controlled way easier at 60km/h than at 200km/h.

I don't get people buying super cars, they are useless on 99% of the roads.

I know someone who had it happen to them as they commuted on a motorway at a regular speed in a regular car. Slammed them into the barrier and broke their leg.

I was shocked to just hear this, I am a Liverpool supporter, RIP Diego Jota and his brother, sad news, horrible for his family.

Sad news. My football knowledge is admittedly limited to pretty much video games so for it to be a player I recognize I can imagine how big this news is in the football community. Crazy that it is almost a year since the Gaudreau brothers, similar ages and both happened around weddings.

Married very recently, had three kids, both him and his brother were very young so it's quite likely most of his family (parents, grand-parents, etc) are all alive to witness this.
Can't even imagine how it's like to be in such a situation...

Because high end sports car tires are meant for high speed and grip, not durability. The total opposite kind of tire compared to let's say thick winter tires with giant treads that last a long time in crap weather. Drivers gunning these cars at high speed will wear out the tires fast.

I bet a lot of athletes and celebs think those Ferrari performance tires they got are as durable as Costco all-season tires you put on a Honda Accord.

I think a lot of people in life just assume if something costs more, it means it's better and lasts longer. Totally untrue. The most reliable and hassle free car I've ever had was my 2003 Honda Civic. The only problem was if you gun it at 140km/hr, that speed was some kind of threshold because the car and steering wheel would kind of shake a bit. But other than that zero issues.

I've got a nice performing Alfa Romeo. Nice looking car. Performs nice. By far most expensive car I've owned. But I've had more repairs and warranty issues with this car than every car I've had in the past combined. But when its working fine, it drives nice and smooth with some kick.

Tires don't just explode out of nowhere. This will be investigated, but in the meantime, here is what you can do to stay safe on the road:
  • Don't cheap out on your tires. They are the only thing connecting your car to the road.
  • Check your tread depth periodically. You can buy a tread depth gauge, or look at the wear bars on the tire. If your tread is at the same level as the bars, replace the tire.
  • Make sure your tires are inflated according to the manual. High temps can actually increase the pressure in the tire do to Pascal's Triangle, so do not over or under inflate. Both can be deadly.
  • Damage to the bead or sidewall should not be repaired. Only damage to the tread should be worked on. If your bead or sidewall is damaged, replace the tire.
This is how much each tire actually contacts the ground at any given point based on tread wear:

Or tire pressure:

So yeah, this stuff is important, especially at high rates of speed. Rest in peace to the victims.

This is totally correct. High-end, ultra-expensive tires actually have less tread wear than cheaper ones. The low tread lets the car stick to the ground and take corners better, but they wear through far more quickly.

This is part of the hidden cost to owning super- and hypercars.

These performance tires also have thin, very stiff sidewalls, so if you hit a pothole or a bump you can compress the edge of the rim into the sidewall and blow it out. Biiiig difference in fat ass SUV tires and the ones on a hypercar, especially if they wanted the largest rim possible, on being able to take a pothole.

As I said in the Football Community topic, rivalries get put to one side when tragic events like this happen. Football is just a game, but life is very precious. He's been taken far too young, both he and his brother. May they both rest in peace. I hope there is a minutes applause for him at the start of next season, as a mark of respect.

Format C: mate on your pc, turn off your electric at the mains, don't go out and turn off cellular data on your phone - its the only way to block it all out...

So sad and tragic for both brothers and of course their families and children ❤️

It looks like he was travelling back to England and heading to a ferry port from Portugal. He couldn't fly, due to recent surgery

Such a sad loss, of a great and seemingly very popular player 😢

If you are a parent of 3 toddlers, you have to be a bit more careful than that. I did a lot of dumb shit when i was a teenager, but the moment you become a father, you literally leave all those days behind.

I feel bad for the mom and dad of these two brothers as well. Losing one kid is rough, losing two is devastating. It legit depressed me when i heard the news, i cant even imagine what that family would be going through.

P.S Reminds me of that Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez who had cocaine and alcohol in his system when he crashed his boat into some rocks in the middle of the night and killed everyone on board. Not sure if these guys were speeding, but cars these days are incredibly safe so they must have going really fast like Paul Walker and his buddy. I remember that guy who drove his tesla off a cliff to kill his entire family of four, but they all survived because the car is built like a fortress.

Not even just parents should be concerned.

When I drive my nieces and nephews in my car, I drive different. I drive a bit slower and (gasp) dont check my phone. I also make sure they are buckled up.

You shouldn't need kids in your car to not drive like a retard. There are children and the parents of children in the other cars on the road.

Rest in Peace.

Dying 10 days after your wedding is some cruel shit.

Alas.. Life, God, The Universe, whatever you wanna call it.. does not give a single shit. When its your time its your time.

This is eerily similar to Johnny Geaudreau (NHL player) who died last year. Died with his brother, bike accident, right after his wedding, and right before they had a newborn.

Rest in Peace. Be thankful everyday you wake up alive and healthy.

Supposedly they lost control of the car because of a blown tyre during an overtake on a highway.
I wouldn't be surprised if they were speeding but even if they were going right at the speed limit this shit could've still easily happened.
Cars can do really wild shit when a tyre blows out at speed, it can either feel like a simple flat tyre or you can completely lose control and end up rolling it which is what probably happened here.

Worst of all is that he only was going to the UK by car because he had lung surgery not long ago so he couldn't fly because of the pressure. Every new detail that gets out about this story just makes it more depressing...

Yep, just because you can afford a Lamborghini doesnt mean you can drive one.

It was a tyre blow out. Nothing to do with the driving, It can be caused by many things, most commonly an overinflated tyre, or an undiagnosed slow puncture that ruptured. it could have happenned on any vehicle from a Lambo to a Honda.

Sad news but also speed kills, those cars are not toys also it's small cabin on accidents become a trap.
No doubt.

Everyone can drive Civics or BMWs because end of the day even though higher end cars like Audis and Mercedes are more powerful, it's still in the realm of driving like a normal guy.

I get a sense with all these celebs and athletes wiping out in Ferraris and Lambos (I've never driven one of these extreme sports cars), it's probably low with shitty visibility and it's got insane acceleration. And nobody buying these cars are buying them so they can drive the speed limit. They will try to gun them at double that if they got room and hopefully no cops are around.

What happens when one of these cars going high speed hit a pothole or you take a turn too fast? I dont know. Maybe the cars have so much grip and stability it's not a big deal. But I get a sense it's driver beware with these kinds of cars. There's only so much safety features they got. So unless youre a pro race car driver, any normie driving these at crazy speeds wont be able to handle it.

It's not even just about pure speed, this accident could've happened right at the speed limit of that road for all we know, but we do know it was during an overtake so perhaps he was accelerating, I've never driven a supercar but I've driven and rode shotgun on a couple 300/400+ hp cars and the acceleration and torque of those it's just insane, I can't even imagine what a 800 hp one is like. No normal person is prepared to drive those things.
It's not surprising at all to me if things get nasty when a tyre blows up while you've got your foot down on one of those engines.
