Lockport, NY police don't understand why some people might find "Negro " offensive.

People finding that word offensive will have heart attacks if they go to any Latin American country.

Funny story - many know its a derogatory term as well and its extremely easy to pick up on whether someone is using the word in a derogatory way or a descriptive one.

OK so what would you like to be defined when trying to use this categorical system apparently...

Black negro colored and African american all offended people apparently in this thread.
Doesn't really matter to me, in all honesty. I'll probably keep complaining until no one feels the need to group people like they're trying to sort mail.

Do people talking about spanish and South america live there? I do and im having trouble understanding why people are actually using my language to excuse and downplay this act of callousness.

When I was taught english I eventually learned that words have different meanings and I learned when to bring those words into a conversation to improve my communication, knowing those subtleties was as important for me as learning Present progressive. So I dont understand why people whose first language is english are so resistant to learning why and why not use certain words, you are essentially saying with a disturbing sense of pride that you have poor conversation skills because you actively choose to avoid knowing things.
Also, if that "Negro means black in spanish" sounds a lot like "Nigger just means ignorant person"(TM) is because its a variation of the same ridiculous argument, just think about the logic you are indulging and ask yourself if you want to stand next to the kind of people that say that.

Load of shit

I see.

Yes some people don't like to be called certain things. I am sure most black people don't like being called negro or colored.

If you're so confused about what to call us, try using each of those descriptors the next time you arrest a black person and report back how they respond.

Calm yourself down when I arrest someone I ask them what they like to be called.

I always find the "It just means black in Spanish" as an argument to be dumb, considering the fact the ones who make that argument are people who don't know a lick of Spanish. And are usually the remedial people calling everything "Mexican".

People finding that word offensive will have heart attacks if they go to any Latin American country.

99% of people traveling to a Latin America country would understand linguist context.

So being unable to find proper logic to dispute my sentiments you resort to insults. Is this the playground now?

proper logic?

your post doesn't even make sense to you lol its one fallacy after another with willful ignorance and obtuse fukkery every chance you get

I couldn't believe this story. The fact that their internal system offers a wide selection of options, is just too much.

Sometime in 1994

Hey, we just got our new computer processing system!

- Oh yeah? What can we do with it?

We can add new people, update their information, and even color code them Negroes!

- Woah! That could come in real handy.

Que?

Spanish negro just means black, while the English origins are explained in the article.

No need to get overly emotional like those people telling you just to stop using a word at certain situations. I have expressed my views on the subject a couple of posts up but I choose to make it a response to a point rather than at some guy posturing over some argument he obviously cares little and is more concerned about getting internet EXP 1+, when your response to a post about derogatory words is some weird vaguely relevant MRA defense then I honestly have nothing share with you and the lesson you are trying to teach me amounts to "being ignorant about stuff is good!".

If you feel im insulting you, please contact the moderators, just make sure its not Bish.

Would you be so kind as to point out the fallacies in my previous post for me? I would also appreciate an exact definition of "obtuse fukkery" as well with some examples taken from my post.

Unless of course this thread has devolved to a point where baseless accusations and ignorance are permitted to run rampant, in which case I would happily leave you all in like company.

P.S. If you could include some semblance of proper punctuation it would vastly improve my ability to understand your sentiments. I make no claims to be a written English genius but long run-on's can leave one's point ambiguous. If I'm truly as ignorant as I'm claimed to be, I could use all the help I can get.

you can't be smart enough to go through the mental gymnastics you just did and then dumb enough to not be able to interpret a lazy post that really is just plain 'unreadable'. it can't be both

Different country, different context. And they have their own equivalent words:

There is this: When asked if he had ever been a victim of racism, he said, "Never. Neither inside nor outside the field. Because I'm not black, right?"

Actually, the word he used was preto, which is significant, since, in Brazil, when used as a color ascribed to people—rather than things, like rice or beans—it is the rough equivalent of the n-word, negro and negra being the acceptable ways of describing someone who is truly black (and moreno or morena being standard descriptors for someone dark-skinned, as well as, occasionally, euphemisms for blackness).

You'll notice that Preto isn't in the list of descriptors the Brazilian people used for themselves in the next part of the article. But hey, it's just a word meaning "black". You can head to Latin America and use it.

I dunno, I kind of agree with him. I do my best to not be offensive to anyone with my day-to-day speech, but sometimes it does seem like people want to be offended. Like they enjoy the attention or something. I dunno.

I guess that's just my "privilege" talking though.

I guess you should describe every black person you see as a negro then since they all just wanna be offended by a truly unoffensive word /shrug

Of all the threads to claim "people are finding everything offensive these days" some of you are seriously picking this one?

I can't lmao.

Here's the trick.

You meet a person like that and maybe you say something accidentally and they flip out and for you, it's blown way out of proportion. Because you're treating it purely as an interaction between the two of you.

But sometimes, for people, that interaction carries far more baggage. For the statement or word that you've innocently dropped, it may be the 20th, 30th, or 100th times they've heard it. That have a bad relationship with the word and it shows.

Coming at it for another angle for your understanding. Has there ever been a commercial jingle, a slogan, song or other meme that bothered you? Something you heard and you think "I fucking hate hearing that over and over again" or "I wish people would stop saying that."

Now imagine that same idea, but it's connected with your very identity. It seeps into how the world itself interacts with you, usually in a poor way.

That's why people flip out.

don't confuse my 'wanting' to be offended with me being indifferent while letting you know how people actually are being offensive

some people want to debate how they're not wrong instead of just chalking it up to the game that they just don't know they're fucked up in how they're dealing with people. if you want to agree with him and all the mental gymnastics included

cool

dick = mra
gay = descriptor (and who gives a fuck if we're just labeling people like groceries in a shopping cart amirite?)
something about the irish and potatoes because that definitely makes sense in the context to this conversation. false equivalence til you get tired and blue

or check his post history which JDSN already linked

go right ahead

Hey now, I never said that. I have enough sense to not use that word. I was mainly referring to "black," which some people do consider do be offensive.

This is where they tell you to get over it, it's just words.

Yeah, that's when I drop the question, "what if I called your child or significant other *insert word here*?"

Generally around 7 words in, they understand that "they're just words" is bullshit.

"that's different. and i don't see your point."

insert coin. start over.

Then at least I know there's no need to talk to those people anymore.

This will probably sound ignorant but "negro" is offensive? I honestly didn't think that was. Not that I exactly run into that word...like ever. Doesn't it just mean black in Spanish? It does sound weird if it's under "complexion" though.

Trust me, considering how often we use the word in the names of several of our groups and events, it would be hard to tell if Negro was offensive. I guess it's considered like the other word, we can say it with no negative connotation, however, if any other race says it, it's offensive.

That makes perfect sense, but it works both ways. The person who flips out at me in your example wouldn't be the first person to do so. Granted, it's merely a minor annoyance and in no way similar to the baggage carried by the other person. But you do see how repeated interactions like that might cause someone to develop resentment towards certain racial groups, right?

Only in people whose world experience is very bare and ego so fragile.

I honestly didn't think that was offensive. Dated but not offensive.

Pretty much every dated racial descriptor is offensive. Most people probably don't know what a quadroon is, but there's a very good chance a 1/4 Black person would be taken aback if you called them one.

That's kinda like white people telling black people to "get over it.

Look, I get that many people still have valid reasons to be sensitive about this stuff. I understand that it hasn't really been that long since things were really bad for black Americans. Shit, until very recently we still had former segregationists serving in congress! Mind-boggling.

That said, you should always try to look at things from the perspectives of others if you want them to do the same for you. I was once banned from GAF for a couple weeks for poking fun at the word "redskin" being a racial slur. I honestly didn't know. When I cooled down and thought on it further it made sense, but at the time I just didn't understand how a prominent sports team could have a blatantly racist name. I was ignorant, yes, but not malevolent.

So that kinda pissed me off. Not to the point that it warped me into a racist lunatic, but it did make me angry... and I can totally see how repeated situations like that might turn a person jaded.

I see the word "negro" as a sentence enhancer. Something spicy you drop to make yourself sound badass and cool. There's a bunch of other sentence enhancers out there, but they just don't cut it sometimes, you know?

Glass houses.

Jeezus, this thread is terrifying.

Are there really that many people out there who don't realize that "negro" is not an OK word to use?

What. The. Fuck.

Another word taken from us. Check your vocabulary privilege.

Bow being serious, so if I'm talking in Spanish and someone hears me saying negro, I could get in trouble?

its really easy to tell the difference.

Why would you? Most people aren't stupid and realize linguistic context. Besides the Spanish word "negro" isn't even pronounced like the US word "negro". Which amkes the whole "It's just spanish for black, get over it black people" argument even dumber IMO.

So, you were completely ignorant of the "redskins" issue yet still decided that it wasn't real or important for whatever reasons. When you were banned for that, you admit you got angry (defensive). But, now, you realize that you completely were wrong all along. But, your last sentence seems to say that ignorant people like you, instead of being silent and opening your mind to other perspectives, will just stay angry and stop even trying to understanding what all the fuss is about because it just happens too often. And the more it happens, the more pissed off you get. Did I get that right?

Jeezus, this thread is terrifying.

Are there really that many people out there who don't realize that "negro" is not an OK word to use?

What. The. Fuck.

Well apparently 'gringo' is an affectionate term so from now on I'll be referring to all my black chums as negroes. Just 'cause I like them, you understand.

I don't know, is something that just came to my head. I remember when visiting Los Angeles, seeing a place with a lot of poor people and I was mindfuck on how all of them seem to be black only, no white people. So I started talked with my GF and said negro plenty of times. Just came to me after reading the thread and finding that is offensive.

Good to know that is pronounced differently.

Easy guide

negro pronounced "knee-grow": English-language bastardization, old, offensive, let it go like your snow princess

negro pronounced correctly: probably ok

Or Africans.

That too yeah.

It annoyed me that it has become the most acceptable way of referring to dark skinned people nowadays. "Even though you are not Americans or Africans but since it is the American way of Acceptability you just have to nod when we refer to you as African Americans."

Heh.

"African-American" is such a silly term since not all dark-skinned people are Americans.

Way does that even mean?

If they are not American then they will be called what they are. Black Americans are called African Americans because it was an identity that was stolen from them.

West Indians and other folks are always more than happy to tell you where they are from so the designation on black Americans shouldn't be seen as poor.
