Damn, I wish I did some more sport when I was younger...

Granted I'm only 21 but seeing all these young athletes makes me feel really age conscious :[

Don't worry, fat middle-aged Italians won gold in the male team archery. It leaves the door open for all of us!

Of course, if you have a natural talent for a particular sport then you might have a chance if you dedicated yourself.

Fencing: Men's Sabre Individual, round of 16

Two Americans still in, which might be a first for this event!

Piste 1

Aron Szilagyi HUNGARY vs Zhong Man CHINA

on deck:

Max Hartung GERMANY vs Gu Bongil KOREA (Gu is my pick for the gold medal)

Piste 2

Nicolas Limbach GERMANY vs Benedikt Wagner GERMANY (Limbach is one of the favorites to win the tournament)

on deck:

Nikolay Kovalev RUSSIA vs Won Woo Young KOREA (any of the Korean team are crazy explosive, fast, and aggressive in this event)

Piste 3

Aldo Montano ITALY vs Diego Occhiuzzi ITALY (Montano is the 2004 Olympic Champion and one of the best known fencers in the world; bouts against teammates are always dicey, though.)

on deck:

Dmitri Lapkes BELARUS vs Tim Morehouse USA (both can be kinda scrappy; I gotta root for my teammate Tim, who had an amazing performance to get to this round)

Piste 4

Rares Dumitrescu ROMANIA vs Aliaksandr Buikevich BELARUS (should be an interesting bout -- the former is an extremely powerful, physical fencer and the latter almost exclusively relies on timing and guile)

on deck:

Daryl Homer USA vs Alexey Yakimenko RUSSIA (Daryl is probably the best American sabre fencer at the moment and performed strongly to get to this round; Yakimenko is a heavy favorite to win the tournament -- should be a tough fight)

WOWOWOWOW. Both Americans won their bouts to get into the quarterfinals. This is unprecedented in men's sabre fencing.

Fencing: Men's Sabre Individual, Quarterfinal

Piste 1

Aron Szilagyi HUNGARY vs Max Hartung GERMANY (two really young guys who are in new to this stage of the Olympics)

Piste 2

Nicolas Limbach GERMANY vs Nikolay Kovalev RUSSIA (The German is still the heavy favorite, while Kovalev is a surprise quarterfinalist, and amazingly, the only one of the Russians left in the tournament.)

Piste 3

Diego Occhiuzzi ITALY vs Tim Morehouse USA (this is an amazing result for Tim, and he'll have to fight hard to keep going against his tricky, patient Italian opponent)

Piste 4

Rares Dumitrescu ROMANIA vs Daryl Homer USA (Daryl just beat tournament favorite Alexey Yakimenko of Russia with speed and power, something Dumitrescu has tons of. This will be a match of physical display.)

GO USA!

Does anyone know any browser plugin that can download the video from bbc website?

I installed expatshield and joined Team Fuck NBC.

Dunno. Seems like in most sports these days if you don't start as a teenager and go to some elite training camp you have no chance.

Most of the British archers started out when they were kids/teenagers but they haven't won gold in many years. It seems if you spent a couple of years getting the technique perfect and then applying some thought into training and mental conditioning you could dominate that sport.

Of course the more athletic sports require extreme training for many years and even the professionals find that draining.

I think it has more to do with enjoying it enough to the point where you dedicate every day to training. If you're already an adult then you've probably found your own niche lifestyle and might struggle to break old habits.

EDIT: To me Archery seems like a very Zen thing, which really appeals to me.

Finally got a chance to sit down and watch Kerri and Misty do their thing. I love watching those two girls play. Magic on that sand I tell you. Magic.

I went to high school with Kerri. She was a year ahead of me and was an amazing player even back then. She still looks the same as she did in high school, crazy.
