Fencing: Men's Sabre Individual, round of 16
Two Americans still in, which might be a first for this event!
Piste 1
Aron Szilagyi HUNGARY vs Zhong Man CHINA
on deck:
Max Hartung GERMANY vs Gu Bongil KOREA (Gu is my pick for the gold medal)
Piste 2
Nicolas Limbach GERMANY vs Benedikt Wagner GERMANY (Limbach is one of the favorites to win the tournament)
on deck:
Nikolay Kovalev RUSSIA vs Won Woo Young KOREA (any of the Korean team are crazy explosive, fast, and aggressive in this event)
Piste 3
Aldo Montano ITALY vs Diego Occhiuzzi ITALY (Montano is the 2004 Olympic Champion and one of the best known fencers in the world; bouts against teammates are always dicey, though.)
on deck:
Dmitri Lapkes BELARUS vs Tim Morehouse USA (both can be kinda scrappy; I gotta root for my teammate Tim, who had an amazing performance to get to this round)
Piste 4
Rares Dumitrescu ROMANIA vs Aliaksandr Buikevich BELARUS (should be an interesting bout -- the former is an extremely powerful, physical fencer and the latter almost exclusively relies on timing and guile)
on deck:
Daryl Homer USA vs Alexey Yakimenko RUSSIA (Daryl is probably the best American sabre fencer at the moment and performed strongly to get to this round; Yakimenko is a heavy favorite to win the tournament -- should be a tough fight)
WOWOWOWOW. Both Americans won their bouts to get into the quarterfinals. This is unprecedented in men's sabre fencing.
Fencing: Men's Sabre Individual, Quarterfinal
Piste 1
Aron Szilagyi HUNGARY vs Max Hartung GERMANY (two really young guys who are in new to this stage of the Olympics)
Piste 2
Nicolas Limbach GERMANY vs Nikolay Kovalev RUSSIA (The German is still the heavy favorite, while Kovalev is a surprise quarterfinalist, and amazingly, the only one of the Russians left in the tournament.)
Piste 3
Diego Occhiuzzi ITALY vs
Tim Morehouse USA (this is an amazing result for Tim, and he'll have to fight hard to keep going against his tricky, patient Italian opponent)
Piste 4
Rares Dumitrescu ROMANIA vs
Daryl Homer USA (Daryl just beat tournament favorite Alexey Yakimenko of Russia with speed and power, something Dumitrescu has tons of. This will be a match of physical display.)
GO USA!
