Long TSA security lines at Chicago Midway airport (video)

I don't think I have ever had to leave and reenter security ever when getting a connecting flight.

I've had to at Laguardia before (domestic flights). Hopefully all the redesigning will eliminate this. Terminals were not connected and you had to jump on a bus not within a secure zone to get to your terminal/gate.

You also typically have to go through screening again if you are connecting from another country.

If someone really wanted to do damage, all they would have to do is attack the airport terminal. A bunch of people herded up like cattle to go through security, and anyone can just walk in the front door whenever they please.
This is true

The TSA is a shining symbol of the failure of our society. It's a bunch of theatre, a total waste of money and time, and a needless invasion of privacy. All for security contracts and the airlines not wanting to be responsible for anything that happens on their planes.

Just further proof to sign up for TSA pre check. I paid the $90 last year, and it is good for five years. You get to bypass the line for a much shorter/non existent one, and you don't have to take off your coat, shoes, belt, or take your laptop out.

A trip to Florida last weekend went super quick because of it. I was through security in under 4 minutes one place, and under 1 minute in another airport.

it's only worth it if you travel frequently.

Those lines look like LAX at Christmas. Once had a 3 hour line ahead of me, and we had to throw away a present because we couldn't bring it in the plane and had to skip baggage or we would've missed the flight.

Funny story, i just started an application to a TSA back office position in San Fran (poor starting salary but same-position raise up to 70k/year, which would be decent for San Fran if still low-end). But when it transferred me from USAJobs to the TSA site, Pale Moon gave me that "get me out of here!" untrusted site warning.

$85 for five years isn't really much though, relatively speaking. If you travel more than once per year, I'd say it's worth it.

I used it for the first time in Atlanta a few weeks ago. In and out of the PreCheck line in literally 5 minutes instead of standing in the general line with everyone else.

that's exactly what happened in Russia, Paris and Belgium. Just attacked near the security gates.

they also tried it at Glasgow but ugh...

Did something happen? I was in SLC and PHX last week and there was almost no line. Granted, I had TSA Pre, but even the regular lines weren't that bad. Suddenly this week, out of nowhere, every airport is packed.

Summer I guess. Vacations.

So, I used to work at a major international airport. For the record, I was not TSA, thank god, but an employee of a private company that owned the airport itself. Also bear in mind I left several years ago, so things may have changed, but...they probably didn't.

Back when I worked there, I regularly advised travelers to arrive like four hours ahead of time because of the lines we were facing. During the "rush hours", we actually assisted TSA for a while with the lines to try, in vain, to get things moving at a better clip.

I can only imagine how much worse it has become. I'd say I feel bad for the agents, but honestly, I do not. During my time working alongside of them, I can count on one hand how many were actually pleasant people (4 people, specifically). The rest, power went to their heads and were some of the rudest people I had to deal with at my job.

And I had been assaulted, spat upon, cursed at, and bled upon by travelers. So yeah, they trump all those people.

One last insight from someone who worked with them: if you ever wonder why rules sometimes seem to be enforced at random, its often because of how they have several different bosses telling them several different things. I remember that well. I had one of their superiors yell at me for doing things a certain way (the way I had been told to do it, no less), and to do it another way. Five minutes later, superior #2 comes along and chews me out for doing it that way and to go back to the way I was doing it. And so forth.

The abuse my coworkers and I took from the TSA was so bad our boss actually told us to leave them at the first sight of abuse.

They've been a mess for years. This is just everything coming home to roost at last.

An organization started by a bunch of people who think the government can't do anything turns out to not be effective at anything! Surprise!
