Looking to buy a piece of art...

I'm redecorating my room, and I can't help thinking that it wouldn't be finished, given my musical and artistic leanings, without a piece of modern art to go across my back wall. Where are the best places to look? Ebay seems to have an enormous listing, but the romantic in me doesn't want to buy art on Ebay. If it is the best option, though, I'll consider it.

What I'm looking for is a modern/abstract painting OR any other kind of abstract art that can hang on a wall. A size of 6-10 feet would be nice. I'm setting an arbitrary price cap of $400, including shipping.

check that shit out. they're all reprints, but its on heavy paper or canvas. you can even get old war propaganda posters printed up for you. or some Dali, which I feel no room is complete without.

I've always been partial to pre-Raphaelite art, but I guess it depends on your "pad" really. o_O Do you have any pictures of your room anywhere?

One of Malevich's Suprematist paintings ('White on White', Construction in Dissolution') would look brilliant. When I get my studio, one of his works will be covering a wall.

:lol I think that "Post Pictures of Your Room" thread got a lot of us lazy, sloppy people off our asses. I'm cleaning and re-organizing right now.

This is where the art will go:

It's going to take the place of those three posters. I thought that something avant-garde would inspire me to learn some Stockhausen.

Check out the art section of eBay. "Outsider art" turns up some interesting matches. It's original, and you might find something you like for a lot less than a reprint that hundreds of thousands of people have.

Meh.. upon closer examination, it seems that this artist keeps doing the same piece over and over again, in different sizes, in blue and red. That doesn't sound like it will be worth anything in 50 years. Neither do the metal wall arts I'm looking at. I should probably set my sights a bit higher.

You want something that's going to appreciate in value, look good on your wall, and is cheap? I think you can only pick two of those at a time for a functioning equation.

I saw this guy yesterday online and I thought with the Lucy pic and musical reference you might like these.http://www.krugerstars.com/ But maybe i going in the complete opposite of what you want. Also http://www.art.com has some nice quality prints that can be mounted.

Edit : :lol just saw the prices. I think you can get prints and posters though

Mmm, you're right about that. It reminds me what an Italian cyclist said about bicycle components: "Cheap, durable, light. Pick any two."

Price is probably going to be the thing I'll have to be flexible with to get what I want, which means I won't be able to get what I want. :/

I'd rather not think of art as an investment. I always go for something that I think looks good but isn't too pricey, then again if I like it I'll pay more than I should for it.
