Lost in Translation

Pretty good, and it was my initiation for kayokyoku because of the Happy End inclusion. Not sure why people either love it or hate it, but I sit in some kind of middle-ground. There's plenty of movies discussing ennui, alienation and/or emotional distance being made in Japan these days, too, like works from Ryuichi Hiroki.

Definitely one of my all-time favorite movies, there's something magical about it that I can't quite define. My friends don't really get it, and I maintain that they are crazy.

Top 10 for me. It felt like it was made just for me. I love everything about it. Flawless.

The first time I saw it, it was on a movie channel and it started around 12:30am. I didn't know anything about it.

Is there anything better than discovering a great movie late a night? That's one of my favorite things.

Really amazing film, one of my favourites. The actors, the mood, everything is top notch. It is amazing how much this film convey through so little of actually happening. I was a bit soured by the ending though, that kiss seemed really unneccesary to me.
...and it also cemented my dislike of japanese culture and environment.

Was an Ok movie though I still can't understand how you could feel lost and lonely in Tokyo of all places.. Had the time of my life there.

one of my favorites. the entire mood surrounding this movie is surreal and attractive. I haven't watched it in a while.. I should rectify that.

I went to see it on a first date when it came out, having no idea what it was or what it was about. I'm sure glad I did.

i usually watch it every year, especially if i'm going to japan (most recent trip was last october). still has the best soundtrack of any mainstream hollywood film in the last 15 years.

Still one of my favorite movies. Great cinematography, acting, soundtrack and simply unmatched atmosphere and ambiance. So, so disappointed in Sofia's output since this film, although Somewhere was alright.

My favorite romance film and one of my favorites of the 2000s.

Such an elegant interplay between the visuals and music, Bill Murray and Scarlett Johansson's performances were superlative and career-best, and the film as a whole is a great evocation of loneliness.

Well, did you speak Japanese even a little, or have people to do shit with? Not hard to believe it would feel like an alienating place for a Westerner if they were traveling alone and/or didn't speak the language. A buddy of mine went once to visit his uncle that worked there and kind of had a scarjo setup where he was alone during the day and only spent time with the uncle in the evenings. Said he had dreadful culture shock due to it and couldn't wait to get out of there. I'm sure it boils down to the individual but I'd think it'd be hard if you were alone and didn't know jack language wise.

Not just a language barrier in this case, but the disorientation and fear that comes with not knowing what to do with one's life. Scarlett's character was a recent Philosophy major who was pretty much lost in translation in life and just following her aloof photographer boyfriend around. She had no idea what she was doing in Tokyo, otherwise.

Been looking for the LP, anyone know where you can still get it?

Ebay or discogs?

The picture disc seems to be more rare. I have a hardcover photo book with a CD soundtrack included as well.

It definitely can come across as boring to some. Firstly you have to "get" it (which a lot of people don't) and secondly the point of the movie has to resonate with you. If those two points don't happen, you're probably going to have a bad time.

I lived in a foreign country where I didn't speak the language, moved around a lot my whole life so I would always feel a bit lonely. Still found the movie pretty boring. I'll have to rewatch it again though, I don't seem to remember any of the details of it at all. >_< Didn't know it was such a popular movie lol, felt like a DVD bin movie to me >_>

She's not feeling lost/lonely because of her location though, that's just a symbolic parallel to the state of her current life situation (and his).

Fantastic movie, wonderful soundtrack. It's one of those movies that I always stop and watch if I am flipping channels.

Incredible film. Absolutely gorgeous to look at and it has resonated with me on different levels at different points in my life. One of my favorites for sure.

I actually enjoy the movie a lot but its "White People Problems - The Movie".

I really don't understand this at all.

I can't find it now but someone posted a translation of what the whisky commercial director said that the translator fumbled, and it's totally hilarious.

Even if you didn't like like it, I don't see how this movie can feel like a DVD bin movie. Like, at all. In fact, it's pretty close to what I would consider a perfectly made film.

Watched it for the first time on Christmas Eve 2012. Immediately fell in love with it. So incredible.

It's my favourite film ever now.

Ha yup I've been in that situation before relationship wise, I can sympathize. Though being in Tokyo may have made it more interesting at least :/

I was speaking more generally for why someone might feel that way in a place they're unfamiliar with language wise and culturally, but yes apt points on the character.

Lol ironically I was watching it on a 15 hour international flight, and most the movies on there were awful.

One of my favorite movies. While I can see why it can be boring to some, some of the main themes in the movie resonated with me and I think that is what defines whether you find it boring or not.

I kinda ruined the magic of the movie for myself by watching the video where they process the last line digitally so you can hear what they say. Wish I hadn't.

Still, great movie.

Can you tell me in spoiler tags? Google is giving me different results. :<
