[Update – This article was updated in early January 2017 to better reflect the state of the below reports and rumours, and add information on reports done since the original article was posted].

I still don’t know exactly why I heard June launch for Zelda for so long from my EU sources. NA sources are able to verifiably confirm that it’s launching day one in NA. It’s more important that I update my info as I learn more rather than sticking to old info out of fear of reprisal.

Yep, the one that has broken the percieved credibility of many a leaker before me. I have heard from a source at Nintendo (Source A), and two sources I will not at this stage comment on, that Mother 3 is ready for Switch and will be releasing in Q2 2017. The game features a new translation rather than the existing fan translation and has been sat ready to publish for multiple months. Emily Rogers and Tom Phillips past attempts to report on the existance of the project for Wii U were not inaccurate through fault on their part, the game was done and ready to go, but it was shelved to drive interest in the Switch once it became apparent the Wii U was not going to recover steam.
I firmly believe we will see the game release on Switch in Q2 2017. I am well aware that many before me have tried to report on this game without sucess, so I do not undertake this lightly.
To further elaborate, while a release date will not be given Jan 12th, I expect it to get a release date announcement at E3 2017, to be released imminently after or during the show. Mother 3 is going to be their “You can get the game soon after our presentation” announcement at E3 2017.

It wouldn't have mattered if Nintendo had an actually decent cross-gen library system instead of nickel and diming people to move a ROM file from one emulator folder to another.

While I'm skeptical of this, it does fit Nintendo's shitty business model.

Take a finished virtual console localisation and move it from Wii U to Switch. Sounds silly but it also makes a lot of sense. It'll be very special to see Mother 3 in 9 days.

Damn, really wanted the trilogy on Wii U. I guess there's now alternate options on that front...
They're probably gonna port the other Earthbound/Mother games to the Switch VC anyway.

That said, great news across the board. Hopefully this pans out & we get Zelda on Day 1. And as mentioned in the Switch thread, it's likely that the Mother 3 localization was finished for the Wii U, but was moved to the Switch when it was clear that the Wii U was dead.

Holding off on releasing a game because the system it's set for is doomed isn't exactly a stupid move.

Why do you think Zelda is getting released on Switch?

So Mother 3 a shadow drop during E3 to go along side Mother 4 announcement?

Talked about this in another thread but I think it's pretty certain there will never be an official Mother 4, considering Shigesato Itoi doesn't want to do it.

I know he apparently said Nintendo could make it without him if they wanted...but, quite frankly, I don't really know why they would want to, considering Itoi IS Mother, pretty much.

Can you imagine?

They released Earthbound Beginnings during E3 and I thought they were going to announce a Mother 3 Remake during the show.

Itoi seems to have been around Nintendo a lot more since Iwata's death, would be really nice to have a Mother game inspired by this loss.

Has Itoi expressed any interest in bringing the series back? Last I heard he was still done with video games.

I guess they could always make one without him but I can't imagine that they would, given his history with the company.

I'm kind of ready for the leaks to stop. It was all fun and games when we had no clue about the NX, but damn I enjoy some surprises a few times a year.

I won't be pulling the trigger on a Switch for at least a couple of years, so it would have been nice to have some closure on the existing hardware.

Why do you think Zelda is getting released on Switch?

Mother 3 would be a VC release - an edited GBA ROM file. And if it's Switch-only, they can, quite frankly, go fuck themselves.

Zelda is a much more high profile release, and I'm convinced it would have had major performance issues on the Wii U.

Why didn't they release Earthbound or Duck Hunt on Wii? Even virtual console games can make a system more appealing. Earthbound topped the Wii U's charts for years.

Itoi said that the world we live in is Mother 4.

Also, I really hope that Mother 3 actually does get an official international release.

I think that Nintendo didn't think EarthBound would sell. Legal issues with stuff in the game preventing its release were talked about among fans for years but since they released it on the Wii U with no trouble, we now know that that was bogus. Also, you need a Zapper to play Duck Hunt and the Wii didn't support them, and Duck Hunt doesn't work on flatscreen TVs anyway.

Cool, but at this point im just waiting for the event next week.

I will wait to see what the community thinks of the new Mother 3 translation before jumping to give Nintendo [more] money. I wonder if the fan translation will consider making changes after seeing what Nintendo has done, or hold firm and treat it as a different, distinct thing.

They should pull a BOTW and just release Mother 3 on both Switch and Wii U. Hell, throw it on 3DS eShop too.

To me it's look like the NA localization was faster than EU and Nintendo ultimately decided to launch in March. I really hope it has nothing to do with the quality of the game and the most issues it has is because the EU localization was rushed.

I could see it happening. Earthbound Beginnings is still only on Wii U VC, despite there being no good reason for it not to be on 3DS VC, too.

Ideally, they'd just release it on both, though.

Zelda is still coming to the Wii U.

It won't be delayed in Europe, I'm sure of it.

Yeah, Zelda games have been released almost globally (within the same week) for some time now. Last time PALands had to wait was Phantom Hourglass as it was released months before in Japan and there was a few weeks gap between the NA and PAL release and of course Twilight Princess, but that was related to the Wii's release rather than the game itself.

We have to go back to something like Four Sword Adventures for a truly staggered worldwide release of a Zelda game.

People would buy a Switch for a proper Mother 3 localisation, even if it doesn't sell systems so a niche audience it still adds a lot of value. Mother fan base is small but loud. Earthbound can still be found on the eshop charts.

Would love to have it on 3DS but Switch will do. Whoever is playing it for the first time (Mother 3), you're in for a treat.

Buy a Switch Mother fans for dat official translation.

I guarantee the fan translation will be more faithful. It's one of the best localizations I've ever played.

I really hope this rumor turns true. I have been one of the biggest pessimists of a localization for this game, and with good reason. But it is a game that should be experienced by as many people as possible.

One thing I don't understand is the withholding. Okay, I get that it's a nice cherry for the Switch, but why wait so long after Switch's launch to release it? Should be a luanch day game if it's ready.

Seems like Nintendo is strategically spreading out releases, including Wii U ports and VC, because they know they don't have much original Switch software ready for this year and they know some might slip into 2018.

EarthBound because it was so niche, I guess. I don't know they released plenty of garbage no one wanted.

Duck Hunt because lightgun games are garbage on Wii, the Zapper emulation would feel like shit with a wii remote. I have played Duck Hunt on the Wii via an emulator and it sucked.

I just hope the Japanese version of BotW won't arrive later.
As most games actually since I'll be playing 9/10 Japanese 1/10 EU.
If region free.

10 Days.

Zelda at launch
and on the go.

Mario RPG.

Possibly 3D Mario.

Splatoon: Second Coat.

Coming out of the gate damn stronk

Laura said in the report that she expects it to release during E3, perhaps to build momentum for another installment, Smash character or similar game.

Talk about jumping to conclusions...

Mother 3 hitting Switch VC means they dont have enough content ? Oook.

I'll cry when Nintendo officially talk about Mother 3, having an official French translation will be amazing, and the first of the Mother series to get one :lol

Completely forgot about Mother 3, but I couldn't give 2 fucks about it since we've had a perfectly fine translation for years.

If Zelda's at launch, Mario's probably gonna get pushed back to at least the summer. As awesome as it would be, there's no need for both on Day 1

No, Mario Kart 8, Smash 4 and Mario Maker means they don't have enough content. MK8 isn't making launch day - and it really should - and the other two are big ???.

To be frank, they should have that Pokemon Stars game out asap, too, but I understand why that is going to take longer.

Although it is pretty fishy that they would sit on Mother 3 instead of releasing it on Wii U, don't you think?

Remember when Earthbound and Earthbound Beginnings was the biggest announcement they had at one point?

No, it's a show of good faith. Emulation for that game is pretty sub-optimal due to the rhythm elements, anyway.

Yup. I remember one of the old starmen dot net members (Stephen Georg) buying a Wii U solely because of EarthBound and encouraged others to do the same. If I hadn't got the Wii U for Christmas the year the console came out I would have bought it solely because of supporting the Mother series officially as well.
