Lttp: Advance Wars Series

Many years ago I bought a game for the GBA called Advance Wars. Expecting it to be a great game I quickly started playing it and for a while it was fun, but not too long after I thought "this game is boring/hard, screw it!" and then I forgot the series ever existed.... Untill earlier this month...

I decided to try out Advance Wars DS since I'm older and more mature now and the game probably won't be as hard/boring as I previously thought it was... and I was right! It's easily become one of my favorite games and I don't know why the hell I didn't like the series when I first played Advance Wars for GBA. I mean you just start playing and get sucked in. The charming graphics and music and gameplay just keep you entertained forever it seems like.

So now my question is, are the two AW games for GBA and the new AW game as good, or possibly better, than AWDS?

I loved advance wars 2 for gba and advanced wars dual strike

I love advance wars days of ruin

I think days of ruin is the best in the series. The CO powers in dual stike were way too broken, especially with being able to use 2 in one day.

Of the 3 I've played, AW: DS is the easiest, DoR is in the middle and Advance Wars (1) is the hardest. They get kind of samey altho DoR is a bit different (easier to replay past levels, more varied units).

DOR actually had a plot that made me care. Cheesey dialogue at times, but a pretty good plot with intrigue and rebellion written in. Gameplay is solid as well. Better than AW2 I thought. Anybody playing the one on Wii?

I still can't finish the last mission of AW1 is very frustartings since I played it non-stop until that mission, is so fucking impossible :(

How's the online of the AW:DoR? that's one of the few reasons to get a DS at least for me.

The online for AW:DoR is pretty good. It makes you win automatically if there's a disconnector, and the maps are random, but other than that the only thing you need to worry about is hackers :lol

The GBA Advance Wars are generally known as the hardest. They are also, IMO, better than AWDS gameplay-wise. There's nothing like fighting with 3 COs at once against an enemy who can Meteor strike you into smithereens, has 50 cities at once, and is generally a bad-ass dude.

AWDS is flawed, because it has the retarded Tag Powers. Also, the new units were mediocre at best. Days of Ruin fixed many of the problems, but it took the fun out of the CO powers by nerfing them considerably. It is now more about strategy than using powers right. Also,
CAULDER
IS F'ING BROKEN!
:lol

Advance Wars 2 is more of the same with slight improvements. And when I say slight, I mean it. One extra unit type, several new enemy units, new COs and... that's it. And it's totally worth the purchase.

I haven't gotten around to DS or DoR yet. I'm trying to decide if I'll skip DS.

I still play the GBA ones, especially AW2. Never played the DS versions but I've heard good things of them.

You've got to love Sami.

My first experience with the series was with the (first) GBA version as well, though more of a spectator than player. My then-boyfriend was playing it and it was fun even just watching. I got my hands on it a couple days later and have been a fan since then.

It's addicting. Great series.

I don't like DoR much because it doesnt have Sami. I guess I also missed the prominence of CO powers and traits. Now every CO is pretty much the same. :(

Days of Ruin is pretty different than normal AW that it's almost hard to compare it to AWDS. You should absolutely play it though.

And if you haven't, PLAY ANY FIRE EMBLEM GAME!

I liked them all. Though they play mostly similar, I had a fun time playing through each campaign in each Wars! game.

AW Dual strike is the most complete package with the amount of extras and achievements to go for. The CO's can be over powered, especialy with tag CO powers. You can also get a bit over powered your self attaching skills. There's also plenty of maps to play where you can disable powers and adjust settings.

AW Days of Ruin is a series reset with all new characters. It's much more stripped down feature wise then AW:DS. COs are much weaker, and you can't even use CO powers through half the campaign, and when you do get them I often don't bother to use them.
Marked improvement in the computers's AI on how it moves and uses it's units.
I'd expect in another year or so a more feature rich DoR sequel.

Don't know about the Japanese versions, but for me AW1 is the best overall game. Followed by AW2, although 2 is more like a tutorial much easier than 1. 1 is pure skill.

AWDS is a joke. The multiplayer is fine but the rehash of maps is a joke and the super tags make it so easy.

Dawn of Sorrow is unbelieveably easy. Its like the shit this out specifically to piss of the diehards. If they could make AW1 with DS graphics and online it would be the best.

I never heard of or played the Advance Wars series (not surprising since I never owned a handheld before) until I picked up Days of Ruin for the DS earlier this year. It's a fantastic game with so much replay value. From what I've heard this newest release is far more balanced than the first AW for the DS with a much more "mature" theme. I would definitely pick it up. Plus, you have the ability to download new maps and create your own (you can even save up to 50 maps!).

I was enjoying Days of Ruin but I, for some reason, stopped at the 3rd mission and forgot I even had the game. Might be cause of the completely uninteresting story
so far
.

I loved AW DS though, but stopped at that one mission that everyone seems to also have a problem with. Sold it along time ago though. If I ever see it I'll buy it again.

Batallion Wars is completely different from Advance Wars. The series' share hardly anything.

Days of Ruin owned me for the first couple weeks it came out but I haven't played since, unfortunately. I love DS and DoR.

I consider Days of Ruin the worst in the (localized) series due to the lack of content in there. The Trial Maps won't even let you change your COs!

It's still well worth a purchase, however, as is any Advance Wars game.

Days of Ruin really suffers in having no Hard Campaign mode.

The AI is the smartest of the series in DoR. The campaign maps offset this difficulty by not having you outnumbered as much, or by starting with more cities. Some levels I'm honestly surpised with the amount of units they give you.
I really miss not having a second play through but with more numerous enemies.

Advance Wars is one of the best gameseries I have ever played, handheld or console. I have AW 1 & 2, AW DS and AW DoR and they are all awesome.

@ Topic starter: You should try any Fire Emblem on the GBA. It has many similarities with Advance Wars but as a strategy RPG in a medievil setting (both series come from the same developer). They are also fan-tas-tic and worth buying a handheld for.

Personally, I like the first one best. It felt like the hardest one, with Rivals on Advance Campaign... Might be just nostalgia speaking though. AWDS was too easy, and there were too many unbalanced COs. Days of Ruin is fine, though I don't like that they have different names for the COs in America/Europe.

You might want to change that.

I'm way ahead of you man, I've been playing Fire Emblem since it first came out over here, although I've only played the GBA versions.

Like most here, I absolutely love Advance Wars. I've got all of them but have only really played the original GBA one intensely. For some reason I can't consider it 'complete' until I've finished everything in the War Room. Good times though.

Another vote for Fire Emblem aswell. Well worth looking into for a different flavour.

Well I just went out and bought both GBA Advance Wars games for a little under $20, which completes my AW collection. :D

Now I just gotta beat the games.

Not to ask a stupid question, but is there an "Advance Wars For Dummies" type site somewhere that explains the strategy basics for the game? I just don't "get" strategy games, so I never got very far in AW2...are there any resources which could clue me in?

Gamefaqs.

No...seriously. They have stuff like this unit FAQ for Days of Ruin

Just got to the last campaign of Days of Ruin.

Wow, this game is fucking great. A real return to form after the mistep that was "dual strike".

Handheld GOTY for me.

Great game, and a better last mission than Dual Strike. But it still sucks compared to Sturm.

After hearing all the praise about the first AW, I really want to find a copy and try it out. AW2:BHR was a blast to play. AW:DOR would've been even better had it included a freakin' War Room. Online play doesn't quite make up for it since (free) WiFi isn't available everywhere.

Excellent. Carry on then, good sir. ;-)

AWDS is probably my favorite in the series. The two GBA ones are close, and you should get them, but I'd advise staying away from the second DS one.

AW1 has the best damn tutorial of any game ever, that's actually entertaining to play through. Definitely start with that one if you're new to the series or strategy gaming in general. And while AW can be very hard, it's not anywhere near as complex as some other strategy titles out there.
