Originally released in 2008, two years after Gears of War 1 and it's not much different than gears of war 1 and that's what I love about it. I think sequels get away from things a lot.

The plot in this one is simple, humanity reached their boiling point and takes the attack to the locusts and you do this through a linear route.

Discovering the locust home turf was amazing, the palace, them just hanging out underground, and how cool was that civil war aspect against the lambet?

Marcus and Dom characters are no doubt just perfect characters, watching them interact and I love their dialogue instead of the super hero who comments on everything these two I think were refreshing.

The guns are fun and don't come across as too much.

The visuals on the series x whether enhanced or not are good looking to this day.

93 metacritic score, games today aren't going above 90.

I thought it was a solid third person shooter, and after coming off the events of Gears of War 1 it's a great game.

What did GAF think of Gears of War 2?

What a fuckin' awesome game and sequel. Holds up remarkably well today as well both in terms of the simple pop-n-cover game play, as well as holding up pretty good visually.

Is COD the only games still launching with a full campaign and multiple online elements? We took that shit for granted. Seemed like any rando AA dev could launch a game with a full campaign, co-op and MP. Frontlines for example.

Campaign is considered unnecessary now and yet people are still paying $60 or more.

Let me ask you a quick question:
How were you able to download the game?

This user seems to imply that games from 20 years ago can no longer be downloaded:
Of course, Sony will keep this game available for download from their servers forever! There's no way people will have trouble installing and playing this game in 20 years, right?

Right?
Is it because Gears 2 is only 17 years old? So we can still download it NOW, but as soon as 20 years will have passed, we will be prevented from downloading it?

One of my most anticipated and most disappointing sequels EVER!

Like Doom Eternal, Gears 2 loses its survival horror aura about it and treats itself like an internet meme. You can make an argument 2 looks better than 1 but its art direction certainly doesnt.

More importantly to me, they completely ruined multiplayer with the movement changes, stopping power, smoke grenades, shotgun, etc. The game just felt so demonstrably different from 1. If Gears 1 feels stiff or clunky, Gears 2 feels like youre running on a beach of dry sand or a foot of water at all times.

Horde is a good bonus but ultimately just that, a bonus.

Came here to post this. The campaign is fine but if you were actually into gears 1 multiplayer and good at the game, gears 2 was a disappointment.

Dunno, let's check again in 20 years from now!

Third best Gears game after 1 and 3.

The first playthrough was insanely good in terms of scale and the destructible physics.

Yeah, the scale was phenomenal for a 2008 game. The riftworm, the caves, mount kadar, the locust nexus and the skorge battle were all just chef's kiss. The biggest twist was Myrrah being human in a locust ceremonial dress at the end of nexus, which sets up the 3RD game.

But they botched the fucking MP launch. Classic Epic Games. From that stupid ragdoll physics in smokes and the slow ass movement, which were all fixed later with title updates, that carried on to 3.

I got banned on Epic Forums for a month for posting videos (I didn't even call out any dev's name, just posted community videos regarding the lag switching with rubber banding and how awful the hit detection was, in general) and they even permed a lot of regular members posting constructive feedback lol

I used to smash this games MP relentlessly back in 2009. Kinda miss those times tbh. You were grateful for one map pack.
I used to smash my controller while playing this games awful MP back in the day. Several times. Remember gnasher shooting in the ground even though you're aiming straight in front of you? Yeah, the MP was fucked up for more than a year until they finally fixed it to a playable level. It never was good though, especially for Gears 1 veterans who're used to play with the shotgun.

Gears 2s campaign on the other hand was great.

Amazing game, but what a terrible launch Gears 2 had. Rushed, bug ridden, MP was broken the first month. Epic made it right though and its still one of my favorites.

I just recently played thru GoW1,2,3 during my paternity leave a few months ago and damn do these games still got it. The enhancement and fps boost was nice but the game from characters and dialogue to story and gameplay just slaps. Absolutely loved going back and playing the original trilogy again. If the remastered collection dropped today I'd play thru the story all over again day one. It's just that good. They really don't make games like this anymore. Companies are incapable of coming close to this level of greatness.

Ye
Ah... so you didn't mean 20 years, but 37 years. And in 37 years from now on, there might be the concern what could happen in another 37 years. I see the struggle.
Yes, exactly! I so happen to own a bunch of 37 year old games on cartridges with all play perfectly fine. Games that I play regularly 🙂

But I'm not sure what you're getting at. Don't you wish that all PS5 games will be playable 20 or 40 years from now? I'm not saying they won't, but yeah?

Can't wait to play it on the Pro, the only Xbox franchise I really cared for. They better hurry up with the announcement and don't fuck up with the physical release like indy.

Feels like games from that era had tons of bad multiplayer launches.
Halo 3 didn't have problems at launch. Gears 1 didn't have problems at launch. MW didn't have problems at launch. Neither did Battlefield 3. Actually most games back then were great from launch, Gears 2 was one of the very few exceptions back in the day.

It's funny I didn't really rate Gears 2 at the time of it's launch, but going back and replaying it a couple times over the years, it really is a perfect sequel.

The only thing I'd say is (like someone else mentioned) that the removal of the horror elements from Gears 1 remains disappointing.

Gears 4 tried to bring it back, but it's not the same with Marvel poisoned characters and goofy looking robots.

Didn't Halo 3 have server issues?
