LTTP: Batman: Arkham Asylum

Started playing this game a few days back and damn is it good. Didn't realize how much fun this game would be. Doesn't feel much like a superhero game at all. Collecting the Riddler stuff is also a great time waster. Do you get anything other than achievements for getting them? So far I'm up to the part where Joker just released the titan formula on Ivey's plants. About how much more of the game do I have?

Also I have the regular version. Is there anything in the DLC that expands on the game story or is it just challenges?

Can't wait to beat it and go on to Arkham City. Didn't realize how good the game is.

DLC is just challenges. Congrats on playing Game of the Year.

EDIT: Collecting Riddler riddles is indeed rewarding in the end if you care to see where Riddler's antics are going. If I am correct (been way too long since I played it), you can unlock the riddles after you finish the game.

Oh and it depends how far you are in the game according to how many bosses you have defeated since you face them all at a certain point and most of them you only face once.

Yeah once the game was over I finished off some of the harder of the Riddler stuff.. You're about half way through (?) I think. There's more bad guys to come before the end (surprise surprise) but I don't wanna ruin anything. I thoroughly enjoyed that game :)

It's one of those games that I played a bit late, so automatically after beating it I thought that it wasn't as ridiculously god like as people said it would be. But it's a fucking fun game, and a batman one at that. So it wins.

I had that feeling as well.. For me it wasn't game of the generation like others say..that is just shocking

Eventually I came to dislike the combat. You only got one attack button, and if you press it Batman might for example do a quick jab or slow cartwheel.
The randomness made it very hard to judge whether you could sneak in an attack or wait to counter.

ive been thinking about picking this up. sounds like its very good, but maybe i shouldnt get my hopes up to high? will i like it if im not a big comics/batman fan, or does much of the games allure rely on the character?

I made the mistake of playing it on easy/normal and it was piss easy. Don't make that mistake and play it on a harder difficulty.

Oh and best super hero game ever. Some great bosses as well.

It's a fantastic game on the level of the Metroid Prime games. If you enjoy having a large-ish game world to unravel and explore, like in those games, then you'll like this. The melee combat is probably the best in any game that isn't a full-on brawler like Bayonetta or God of War, so that's worth noting. As a game, it totally works.

If you're not into Batman, well, I'd still say try it out, because it works regardless of the fiction. If you're a fan, this game is twice as good just for the way the characters are handled, but otherwise they're still engaging enough. It only requires you to know who Batman is, who the Joker is, and any other characters have easily accessible bios anyway- all the characters fill simple enough roles anyway, you should be able to keep up.

I made this mistake as well. Played it on normal and it was way too easy. To the point where it detracted from my experience. Overall it's a very fun game with some neat mechanics.

In a few months I'll replay it on hard & hopefully enjoy it more.

The combat challenges have been kicking my ass though.

Ya..this was one of those game that I platinumed on the PS3 and then got all the achievements for it on the 360...such a great game.

Ive got the steam version with a good physx card...I really should just play that now too.

I didn't know much about this game except that it was good, but I picked it up on sale six months back or so.

Holy shit.

Whoever said "hey, lets make a game that combines Metroid, Price of Persia and Splinter Cell starring the godamned Batman" is an utter genius.

There's a lot of Batman stuff in there for people who are already fans, but it's still a great game even if you're not. It's the perfect blend of combat, stealth, and exploration that makes the game, not the character.

A Batman fan will probably get more out of the game, but it's still a game that shouldn't be missed.

Pretty much the same thing here. I ignored the game pretty much all the way through development, but then I saw a lot of people here on GAF talking about how good it was. Then when I saw people comparing it to Metroid, I was like, oh, okay then, I guess I'm gonna check it out.

Game of the generation, I'm serious.

I'm not even that big of a comic book fan believe it or not. But something about this game really pulled me in...

Mixes Metroid, with awesome beat-em-up style combat, with incredible (and accesible!) stealth. I usually hate stealth, but this is one of the two games where stealth is so much fun for me (this and Uncharted 2).

-We need better bosses.

That's about the really heavy complaint I can lay at the game.

Edit: Oh and maybe tighten up the dialog. "I eat guys like him for breakfast" lol.

Just beat it today, myself! Such a fantastic game, with such great talent behind it.

I'm still not sold on some of the character designs, but the voicework behind them makes up for it in the end.

I don't think I've played many games with such a rewarding and fluid combat system. Beating the batshit out of thugs never gets old for me. I can't wait to play Arkham City!

The combat, story, atmosphere, exploration, and music are just incredible. It really is what any Batman fan could ever want from a Batman videogame and yet it's more than that - it's one of the best games this generation. As a fan of Batman, a Batman game being one of my favorite games out of all the games this generation is, quite frankly, shocking. I know the reputation of superhero/comic book video games and this is the only game to break that reputation (besides Marvel vs. Capcom, I suppose).

Ah yes, I think this is one of my favorite games this gen as well. Probably beat it 3 or 4 times. I feel the game really shines in the challenge mode. I didn't seriously start playing that mode until about a month ago because I was getting hyped due to Arkham City media. Now I am just two fight medals away from platinum.

Collecting the Riddler trophies gets you some closure on his taunting, but that's about it.

Fantastic game. Since I grew up watching Batman TAS, its so great that they got Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill and even Arleen Sorkin reprising their roles...just awesome.

I plat/100% that game, and loved every minute of it. Except maybe a couple of the advanced combat challenges, like the one with the electrified floor.

You get the more flashy attacks after you started a combo. The game didn't explain details like that. Hell, I didn't even know you could do a ledge take down until last month when I was doing the predator challenge map.

I love the combat, it is so precise and everything just glides and moves in a great pace. Stringing together a 15 hit combo is awesome.

I started monday and beat the game yesterday night for the first time. I really enjoyed my time with the game, it was fun, heading around arkham asylum with joker and his antics were great. I still have some riddler stuff to get through and am stuck on some challenges.

Yea the combat is lame and boring. But I love going around sneaking within a room and silently taking down thugs.
It isn't trust me. You need to learn it fully though... I didn't grasp it entirely until I played the challenge rooms.

You can't just button mash and expect to get 3 stars, in fact it's impossible doing it that way. Timed button presses are required and you gotta learn to chain your combos.

Certain enemies are also only vulnerable to certain attacks. For instance the knife wielding guys have to be stunned in order to keep your combo chain going, or the stun stick guys need to be vaulted over. Takedowns also become a crucial element to racking up a high score. It actually takes a huge amount of skill.

Enjoyed it greatly when I first got it for my PS3 and now I am enjoying it again on PC thanks to the Steam sale. Really good optimized PC port too. Even with PhysX on high, the game runs at 60fps on my geforce 460. Wish there were more developers like Rocksteady making superhero games.

Not quite. Only once I can drive the Batmobile freely around Gotham City will I have everything I could ever want from a Batman game.

Not saying I want the Arkham series to become Grand Theft Batman, just saying. I think they can gradually increase the scope, AC seems like a step in the right direction.

It took the challenge modes for me to realize that the combat wasn't boring at all, but rather. extremely addicting. The amount of times I retried just trying to get my combo multipliers higher and higher...fun times.

I think part of the problem is that the campaign doesn't do an especially great job of teaching you the combat, but once you "get it", it becomes incredibly addictive to try and master your highscores.

I completely agree. The combat seems really shallow at first but once you get the hang of it, it's sooo satisfying.

I look forward to replaying it on PC someday when I finally get a new rig.

What I can't understand is how someone hadn't thought of borrowing elements of Metroid Prime sooner lol. I thoroughly enjoyed this game and it was one of my favourites of 2009 though I do have some complaints. Whilst I found the combat fun and challenging at first soon enough I realised it wasn't particularly that deep or rewarding(not that I was excepting Bayonetta levels lol). As time went on it got a little dull, after I had learnt all there was to know I could take down enemies in my sleep. I do love the stealth approach though, swooping down from the rafters and preforming stealth take-downs and scaring the shit out of enemies never gets old.

You have a Sonic the Hedgehog avatar, dude!
:)

Why does that invalidate his criticisms? Sonic used to be good, Sonic 2 is better than this game.

I put this game in the same league as Darksiders. Doesn't do anything remotely interesting but still fun and polished.

I don't particularly like Darksiders but I agree 100% with your assessment. Really they are both completely derivative and unoriginal and yet Batman some how managed to be great.

Whilst Rocksteady captured the Batman universe incredibly well (Paul Dini, B:TAS cast, character bios); the gameplay could've been so much more.

Riddles: Pitifully easy, and 99% of the time players would just look for abnormal objects in the environment for answers
Combat: Simplistic at best. Timed button mashing with no depth at all
Bosses:
Poison Ivy
was the only enjoyable and interesting boss fight in the entire game. Everything else was a Bane clone of dodging the charging bull or a series of minion gauntlets

Agreed. For me, its not only the most satisfying 3d combat, its the best. Im playing Yakuza 3, now that feels bland, unispired and tedious.

This game is one of best games this gen, right up there with RE4.
