LTTP: Batman: Arkham Asylum

Guessing I'm near the end of the game now, and all I can say is wow! Level design is some of the best I've seen in years, and the secrets instead of tedious, further deepen the game world. Would love to see these guys so the next Legacy of Kain.

Make sure you get all of the Arhkam chronicles or whatever.

Consider that the true ending of the game. That's your best bet.

I have the Steam version on PC, but do have a PS3. I had nothing but problems with the DRM on the PC version last I tried it, so I gave up even getting it to run. I'm tempted to try again, but while I'm at it, what is the best version to get the console or PC version? It made me register like 2-3 different services or something when I tried to play, if I remember, Windows Live, Games for Windows or something and maybe another, i can't remember. So, I'm tempted to pick up the PS3 version.

Replace that with
Leper
Joker and his band of ugly UE3 villains and you get AC.

The mutants only pop up a few times and there is more than just the Joker. He isn't the most interesting villain in the game, though he is much more interesting than he was in AA.

Try to find the B:AC PC thread here and see if you find the info you need. The PC version, when it works, is almost certainly the best possible option no matter what.

The fact AA reminded me of Soul Reaver was one of the reasons I loved the game.

True, but I think AC doesn't have as interesting side-villains as AA, namely Scarecrow and Croc, although the fight against the latter was somewhat a disappointment after all the build up. The atmosphere when you entered his lair was magnificent though. I remember running back to the entrance the first time he appeared. =D

Popular consensus on which of the two versions to get? (PS3 vs 360). I've been bitten by the Bat bug thanks to DKR and need to play this again.

Asylum remains the only game this generation that I finished within a week of buying it. Loved every single thing about it.

Strangely, I gave up on City after a few days. It had none of the magic of the first game.

I couldn't get into City like I did with this one. I lost my save file and I don't want to play on my laptop so I need to find this cheap on 360

Yup.Arkham City was an inferior experience compared to AA, the story was not good and the pacing was all over the place, lame bosses, weak fights, no memorable moments at all,the City itself wasn't used well at all,Arkham Asylum was amazing, a masterpiece that let you feel like batman, with better atmosphere and story and everything and sadly Arkham City was nothing like that.

I thought Asylum was better than City, City was a great time waster but I dont know I felt like Asylum was put together much better. Maybe, I need to play it again now that i've beaten both but from what I remember, I feel like Asylum was better overall

Asylum is in the same league as the first Metroid Prime, aka a MASTERPIECE.

AC is overrated , yet well done.

Put me in the camp that thinks Asylum is better than City. Arkham City's narrative just felt too unfocused, cramming in too many villains as fan service. City also didn't have many memorable moments, and the interior locations (the main 'dungeons') were not as good as they were in Asylum.

Even though Arkham City was great, I still prefer Asylum. The island, the atmosphere, it all just seemed more mysterious to me. Plus the Riddler trophies were hidden better and the Arkham chronicles and interview tapes were actually an interesting and rewarding addition. Plus the Joker (and thus Mark Hamill) seemed to have more of a presence in Asylum which was a treat. Oh and the Scarecrow sections, liked those too.

In City, I found the Riddler trophies to be overkill and they grew tedious after a while; just couldn't maintain interest in stepping on pressure pads. The open city environment was cool but the story felt disjointed. I also didn't care for the prominence of guns being available to almost every goon. Plus there didn't seem to be as many opportunities for silent takedowns and stealth-like gameplay. Still a great game but didn't live up to Asylum for me.

I could not agree more. As amazing as Arkham City was, Arkham Asylum is by far the better game in terms of story, level design and atmosphere. The only thing City does better is the improved combat and its fluid use of gadgets in combos. Next Batman game of Rocksteady can have the same kind of city structure, but there have to be fewer characters that are actually worth a damn instead of just being fillers.

AA was a really good game but I'm somewhat surprised by the praise it gets. I suppose it deserves some respect for proving that a Batman game can be awesome, but calling it the best game of the generation just seems to be going too far. I certainly recommend it though.

It is the best comic based game ever. I guess people were just so happy to finally play as Batman the way it was intended to be, that people forgot to put some common sense in their words.

Its definitely one of my favorite games of the generation. I think it was the first game I liked enough to get all the achievements/platinum trophy for. I think i've played through it like 9 times so far, first on PS3 and then PC later on. I still have urges to go back and play it.

The combat is amazing, I love the metroidvania aspect of it, and I really appreciate that they used the voice actors from the animated series. It's just a solid game and its definitely one i'll be returning to many times in the future

I couldn't get into AA but I'm gonna give it a go tonight, after seeing TDKR on Friday I just want some more Batman action.

I've missed out on this franchise for some reason. It seems like it would be exactly the kind of badass game I would love, but I never got around to it. What year did it even come out?

Only 2 problems with this game:
Boss battles
Blue filter OP

Other than that it was pretty flawless. I completed it on PC and on 360. Most enjoyable combat in any videogame I have ever played.

Playing through City right now for the third time. It will be my second time getting 100%. Managed to get a 2 million score on Joker's Carnival, no idea how.

Tried the PS3 demo and thought it was awful. Consequently thought the game was shit and wrote it off (so I thought). Decided to get it for the 360 later on for some strange reason and WOW... Surprise of the generation for me hands down.

Couldn't believe how I let a demo keep me away from the game for so long. VERY enjoyable well made game. However, aside from the game being great, I think the whole experience of me not liking the demo and deciding to play it later on with no expectations whatsoever was crucial to why I enjoyed this game so much. I normally despise comic book hero games.

I think a lot of the praise comes from just how much of a surprise it was.

If you'd told me in early 2009 that a Batman game made by the guys who made Urban Chaos was going to turn out to be an amazing, 10/10 experience, then I'd have thought you were crazy. I was expecting the standard, shitty licensed game, like Iron Man, not a GOTY contender.

Just beat AA for the first time, I really enjoyed the experience. With TDKR coming out, I pretty much have had a month of Batman. I watched BB, TDK, TDKR and ran through AA, which I've had for a while but never gotten around to. AC is up next, and I guess the crowd's mixed on whether or not it is superior to the first game, so I guess I'll just have to find out myself.

Great game!
Set the bar for Superhero action games, that has yet to be beaten. (Except by its sequel)

Only downside was a crap version of Bane. Reducing a great character to a big dumb bruiser that throws thing at you.

I thought AC was vastly inferior to AA. Some of the boss fights in AA are just so good.

Erm wut?

If there's one thing I think should not be disputed is that the boss fights in AC were much better than AA. I mean opinions and everything... but still, they were far better designed in AC.

Is it worth going back to this game after having played the crap out of Arkham City? I have a sense it's going to feel old and outdated if I try to go back to it without any of the gadgets/moves I used in AC.

Yes, it's not gonna feel outdated really. It's still great.

It does feel a little outdated, but I still found it fun to go back to. I hold AC up as the better game, but was still able to go back and enjoy AA again.

I didn't like it as much as AC, which I fucking loved.

AA just had no intensity or immersion to it because of the lacklustre story.

It was like Batman slowly walking after Joker comically telling "I'm gonna get you Joker", making it all a big farce.

AC on the other hand was really engaging and intense; you really wanted to continue playing to see what would happen.

Just bought the game on 360 for a second time. Got it originally during launch week and now I just got a copy of the "Platinum Hits - Game of the Year Edition." I'm going to try and play through it with the anaglyph 3D mode on the whole time for a change of pace from the first time.

It isn't trust me. You need to learn it fully though... I didn't grasp it entirely until I played the challenge rooms.

You can't just button mash and expect to get 3 stars, in fact it's impossible doing it that way. Timed button presses are required and you gotta learn to chain your combos.

Certain enemies are also only vulnerable to certain attacks. For instance the knife wielding guys have to be stunned in order to keep your combo chain going, or the stun stick guys need to be vaulted over. Takedowns also become a crucial element to racking up a high score. It actually takes a huge amount of skill.

Watch this video to see what I mean:

Also, learn how to master and time ground takedowns. They are worth 100 points each, and if you time them when your counter is high, you can get some crazy scores.

40 hit combo X 100 for a ground takedown = mucho points!

Also diversify your moves so you can get a nice bonus when done.

Don't let people's hyperbole turn you off AC. I understand liking AA more than AC, but saying AC is a shit game is going too far. It's all about preference of game structure.

Just beat AA yesterday after buying it nearly three years ago in a Steam sale.

Loved it, although I sort of regret playing it on easy since I never really had a challenge. Atmosphere was fantastic though. Going to steal Arkham City from my friend when he goes to Europe

AA is worth playing just for Harley's outfit. Though I would say the story felt tighter but AC was an improvement in every area.

This game is so much better than it has any right to be. What genius at Rocksteady said "hm, a Batman game...lets make a mixture of Splinter Cell, Prince of Persia, and Metroid"?

Speaking of Harley, I noticed right off the bat that her voice was changed for Arkham City and I'm totally okay with it. It was nice that they brought back Arleen Sorkin from the animated series, but her performance was just terrible in AA. Just compare one of her interview tapes to her origin story in Batman TAS, which is almost word for word, and the difference is staggering.

Maybe she just stinks without Andrea Romano voice directing, but Tara Strong is doing a much better job in Arkham City.

Other than the story being a bit looser, Arkham City was every bit superior to AA.

Fantastic follow up to a great game.

Also two words: Beat Down! God I loved that move in AC.

So this isn't about Arkham Asylum but more about Arkham City. I'm playing through it right now, and I guess I'm in the middle of the story or something. But did anyone else feel that Kevin Conroy's performance in this was a bit spotty? I don't remember if it was like this in AA as well but it absolutely feels like he is a bit off from time to time.
