Saw that the last Cowboy Bebop thread was almost 3 years old, so I hope that it's ok to start a new one! Anyway I started watching a few of the episodes, but before I knew it I watched all 26 episodes and the movie within a week. Safe to say this is probably one of my favorite animated shows of all time, anime or not.

Off the top of my head episodes that I really enjoyed were The Real Folk Blues, Cowboy Funk, Pierrot le Fou, Mushroom Samba, Ballad of the Fallen Angels, Toys in the Attic, and Speak Like a Child. In general though, the show was consistently excellent with only a few episodes that I really didn't care for. (Boogie Woogie Feng Shui and Sympathy for the Devil mostly)

I could rave on and on about what I love about this show such as the superb animation and music, but I think what really brought it all together was the show's incredible cast where I think there wasn't a single character that I thought the show would be better off without. (although I didn't really care for Vicious, it was mostly his impact on Spike that gave him importance in my opinion)

For me it was seeing these character's past and watching them grow and change throughout the series that really kept me hooked, and by the end I was getting misty eyed seeing their stories all come to a close. Even right now I'm still thinking about the show's core themes such as loneliness and letting the past go, and for me in general something has to be very thought provoking if I'm still thinking about it several days later. This is especially surprising that this is coming from an anime, and from my experience I never really cared for the medium. (too many cliches, lack of maturity, two dimensional characters)

Overall I was heavily impressed by this show and can now easily see why it is so revered by many. Is there any other anime out there that is on par with this series (mostly in terms of character, level of maturity, etc.) that I should check out? (maybe something recent/modern?)

Samurai Champloo. Essentially tied with Bebop for best anime of all time. Shinichirō Watanabe is God.

Such a great show, I wish Watanabe would make a new original series. Loved Sakamichi, but it's an adaptation of someone else's manga.

Yeah, love it to death.

You might want to try Baccano. It's not exactly the same, but most people who love Bebop also like Baccano.

Watch Samurai Champloo. Created by the same guy and it's equally great. Even has Steve Blum voicing the main character like Cowboy Bebop.

Does anyone know if a streaming service like Netflix or Hulu has this available? I've been meaning to watch this for a while, but I don't want to buy any physical media unless it's the only option.

Yeah I'm not that into anime either but Cowboy Bebop is definitely one of my favourite shows. The soundtrack alone...

I generally like animes geared more towards adults. Samurai Champloo has been mentioned, but I also like Welcome to the NHK and 5 meters per second.

Going to check out Kids on the Slope.

I finished Samurai Champloo recently. Don't get overhyped. It's not as good as Cowboy Bebop, but it's still pretty good.

I just finished Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo for the first time a month or two ago. So good.

I haven't really watched any anime since I was in highschool, and even then I only saw what was on adult swim.

Now I'm watching SAO and I'm not really enjoying it anywhere near as much as Bebop or Champloo.

Womp womp.

The guy did work in Animatrix too. Cowboy Bebop is classic, we need a Blu-ray stat.

Never watch this show with English dubs. Same goes for Samurai Champloo.

I just started watching it, too! I've been dating this rad lady for a few weeks, and we watch a few episodes together whenever I go over to her place. I haven't liked an anime series this much since... like, ever. I love a few anime movies, but was never really into the TV shows. This one's awesome, though.

The fuck? The english dub is regarded as the best dub for a lot of people. Not sure about Champloo, but even then it's very good quality.

It is one of the very few anime's that I like. Show is amazing. Too bad it isn't on tv until 5 AM on Saturday now.

Absolutely this.

Samurai Champloo is very similar (obviously since it was made by the same guy) but I much prefer Bebop over it. Can't really recommend more animes for you OP since I've never like anything else.

With the possible exception of Paranoia Agent but it's not really in the same vein as Cowboy Bebop.

If you want a show that tackles more mature themes look for Mushishi. Its episodic like most of Cowboy Bebop but its not an action show. Very much a drama.

watch it love it

16 episode series

Not sure how the DVDs are, but when I first watch the series, the last 3 episodes weren't included (or released yet) until later... so if you a compilation make sure the total eps are 16

Love Cowboy Bebop.

I'd also recommend "Kino's Journey". A traveler visiting different countries on her motorrad, learning their culture and values, never staying for more than 3 days. Very mature and philosophical.

It's pretty good, but a bit overrated imho. I didn't care for the Ed character at all, and I guess I'm not a fan of series that have a pretty subtle overarching story and focus mostly on random side stories. The music was cool though.
I actually prefer Samurai Champloo over Bebop.

cowboy bebop is by far the best anime ive ever seen. excellent english dub (i think its way better than the original japanese voices), the story is good, just the right length in terms of episodes, and oh my god the music - just overall completely amazing.

samurai champloo and kids on the slope were pretty good too. i just started watching the big o and now i think i will get baccano since it looks great.

oh man you start comparing anime to Bebop and Shamploo you will always be disappointed.

Ghost in The Shell Stand Alone Complex as a whole is good as well.

Best episode was the fridge with the year old crab sandwich in it.

Well that's probably one of the few episodes I've seen but it was hilarious.

"You're gonna carry that weight."

So many years later and I still do man, I still do.

Nadesico and this are pretty much my favorite anime tv shows ever. Well, that and Escaflowne.

I finished watching the series about 2 months ago and totally agrees with OP. I'm not really into anime but this is one of my favorite shows. The music, the characters, the animation just oozes with style. I tried Samurai Champloo and it's just not as good.

Samurai Champloo, FLCL, Ghost in the Shell, Baccano. Too bad stuff like Baccano is so rare these days.
Ok the wife and I watched one episode of Baccano (I hope I'M talking about the right show) and never went back. It was strange. People shooting each other in the streets. We didn't understand it at all and I think we meant to watch a few more to kind of make sense of it but we just never did.

it has a very unique method of story telling. It's definitely worth watching again.

Of course I love this show.

My favorite moment of the whole show:

When it's very aware that Spike is going to go on a suicide mission. He starts telling Faye about himself and she is like shut up, don't tell me, you don't get to say nothing about yourself the whole time I know you and now you're leaving you want to tell me. Spike was such an enigma in the show and I though this part was excellent. Reminds me of a famous quote from a novel "Don't ever tell anybody anything. If you do, you start missing everybody".

Yeah I love Bebop but was pretty meh on Champloo as the series wore on. (*great* first episode though) I think some of it was that Champloo seemed to riff on some pretty specific Japanese references while Bebop's references I recognized (Aliens, Westerns, 90210! etc.) The other was that Bebop was rock solid consistent throughout where Champloo wasn't.
