LTTP: Dark Souls

He's just skeptical because it's rather tricky to get 10 Dragon scales in one playthrough without a guide. But I suppose you might have farmed Drakes for their drops

Oh, I see, TBH I don't think I was ever looking for them particularly, I do remember tho, that one dark phantom left me a ton a cool shit, so maybe that's from where I got those Dragon scales, lol.

What stats are you leveling up more? Strength or Dexterity ? Maybe both?

IIRC the Man-Serpent Greatsword is one of the best Strength weapons in the game, so if you are levling up strength ditch that drake sword and upgrade the Man-Serpent Greatsword.

Up to recently I was leveling them all equally, I thought that would be a good idea, but I guess not, lol. Now I am trying to level up strength to 24 so I can use MS Greatsword, an maybe endurance so I can be faster?

It's not usually a good idea, but it's nothing you can't overcome. When you say you "leveled them all equally", did you touch Resistance, Attunement, Faith or Intelligence? Resistance is always a bad choice because switching out or upgrading your armor is much cheaper and gets far better results.

And another nice thing about the MS Greatsword is that it can be buffed, unlike Drake sword. If you have Resin items, or any Magic Weapon spell, your damage should increase even further.

Just started this again on the PC (thank you Durante!) and am about to beat either Capra or the Hydra. It's about as far as I've come when I played it on 360 at release.
I was lucky to get a black knight sword as that does amazing amounts of damage and, apart from its comparably slow speed, is a lot better than the drake sword.

I really don't know what to level up though, any tips? Currently my str is about 20, agi 18, vit 15, end 26 and that's all the stats I've touched (playing pyromancer).
I thinking about leveling up endurance more to be able to equip better armor without movement penalty, havels ring and ring of favour and protection are equipped so I get a good bonus there.

Yeah, I lucked out on this awesome weapon during my first playthrough using a Cleric from the very first Black Knight and immediately specced out to use it. The +5 version carried me until the end lol.

I played Dark Souls very reservedly because I was afraid of losing any souls. Consequently I finished the game at like level 100 or something stupid. I didn't find it difficult, and I really enjoyed just going around the world and learning more about it.

I stormed through NG+ on quickest paths until I got to O&S, at which point I got destroyed (trying to kill in order) and after hours of grinding I just got bored and put it down. I don't think I'll go back to it.

This game is far easier than I expected.

Got past the Taurus demon and to the dragon on the scary bridge and I've only died once because of some big guy with a club who one shot me. Almost died because of a scary black Knight dude in the undead burg. But other than that pretty easy.

Also not being able to pause is a pain in the ass...
lmao

"The game is easy, I haven't reached the first actual boss fight but I've yet to be challenged."

I'm not saying it's easy, I'm saying it's easier than I expected.

People were saying it's the hardest game they have ever played etc. Only dying once in about 2-3 hours of playing isn't exactly the hardest game I have ever played.

It is pretty fun though, quite satisfying to beat the larger guys like the Taurus Demon.

Yes, I leveled all of those equally, lol. They are all level 17 now.

So, I am finally level 24 strength and can properly use MS Greatsword, I upgraded it immediately to +5, but it looks like I can't buff it any further? Because at this point it's doing much smaller damage then my Drake +5 and is much slower as well :/

If you are looking for pure damage, Go kill Havel the Rock and get his club/dragon tooth. He is found in the basement of the tower of 1st Taurus Demon and the door can be opened using master key, if u are in the early game. Else some boss drops the key.
Dragon tooth is in Anor Londo Havel doesn't drop it.

You can't upgrade it further at just any location. The transition from +5 to +6 (normal route) is a service that only Andre (blackmith in Undead Parish) can provide in his "Modify Equipment" option, if you gave him the Large Ember from the Depths.

You should stop upgrading any stats related to magics that you aren't actively using. And Resistance.

I'm not saying it's easy, I'm saying it's easier than I expected.
It's, generally speaking, a fairly challenging game, but its reputation of being "super hard" is incredibly exaggerated.
Monster Hunter Tri is far more hard, for instance, and yet you don't see people screaming all over the internet that it's the hardest thing in existence.

Just started the game myself a few days ago and it's fantastic. The only real problem I have is one shared by Demon's Souls. Not being able to pause is incredibly frustrating

Saying that I'm in Blight Town at the moment and I really just want to finish and get out of here. It reminds me of the Valley of Defilement which i hated in Demon's

In theory yes but not everyone chooses Master Key and getting the ember is pretty much a must.

You can totally avoid the depths with no repercussions and with no master key.

Firstly, you can use any upgrade path other than physical, or use a weapon that upgrades with twinkling.

As to how to get to blighttown with no key, you go from
Undead parish to darkroot basin, to valley of drakes, to BT exit near the new londo elevator.

It can be a bit annoying at times, yes.
But just in case you weren't aware of it, let me point that you can actually quit the game at ANY point and you will continue *exactly* where you left, when you reload.

Yeah that's what I do. But if the phone or doorbell rings, or someone calls me, I have to decide whether to quit game, or try and be quick. It's a choice I'd rather not make. Sure it doesn't take long to quit and reload, but it's still a hassle. I get the whole online aspect, but if they just disabled pausing when connected to someone (either via invasions or summoning) but allowed pausing elsewhere that would be fine

With the game available as a GFG download i decided to download it and get stuck into it again. I got it as a christmas present on the 360 a few years ago but i neglected to start playing it until last year...... months after i stopped playing the pc version (lost motivation + i had to format my pc - even though i backed up my save game progress, i didn't have the heart to see if it worked so i never reinstalled it).

I wound up building up my character really well on the pc version, without knowing what was what (i still don't know the upgrade paths for the weapons and exactly where find the items that make upgrading them possible).

When people say to goto different locations i havn't the foggiest how to get from point a to point b, i just end up in various spots due to exploring.

I'll need to do some research to say exactly where i was up to in the game, but i am pretty sure i beat two other bosses after the capra demon.

Will never forget the first time i beat the first black knight...... did it by a fluke after he walloped me many times with 1 hit kills haha.

Anyway in my current game on the 360 that i started last week, instead of doing what i did on the pc version (warrior for the win), i first tried to be a knight..... i quit that after 15 minutes and chose a pyromancer. Six hours into the game and i'm trying to get a better weapon instead of a hand axe (i want the battle axe i had on a playthrough in another game lol). I do have a short short and great long sword but i still need to build up my stats to use them correctly.

The last time i played it 2 days ago i beat the Taurus Demon after my second go (took 3434233 attempts in my first play through, but in my second playthrough last year i did it first go haha).

Well I am not using magic at all, lol.

I managed to upgrade my weapon to +10, now how do I make that +11 transition?

You need another Ember.
Read the SPOILER to know where to find it, if you want:
New Londo, on the second floor of a building with Dark Wraiths.

Capra Demon is super easy. I fail to see how anyone had trouble with this boss, unless they haven't learn how to roll yet.

lol, no it isn't. fighting the camera is the hardest part of that boss. i enjoyed the combat in DS, but i got to capra demon and put the game down. solid game, though.

So you've seen... what?A tenth of the whole game?
Anyway, I would agree with anyone claiming that Capra Demon was some awful boss fight design, but it's hardly a game stopper.
All you need is a bit of luck to avoid his initial charge and the dogs. Once you are upstairs the combat is essentially already won if you don't screw things up.

sure, we'll call it a tenth. enjoyed what i saw, but didn't feel like continuing. i tend to put down games and move on to others a lot.

I'm constantly disappointed that so many people pollute their first playthrough with this.

And it's not even that the sword is outrageously powerful, it's the fact that (for the most part) receiving this item at all shows that instead of going into the game with a fresh mind and attitude the player did background research on how to play the game.

Which is pretty lame, because this is a single player game. Part of the fun is figuring out what works and what doesn't. The expectation from the developers is that the players are trudging through something unfamiliar, and we can especially see that in Dark Souls.
You know this game was likened to SMB, and how people shared its secrets, right? I'm sure you NEVER used the invisible blocks or warp zones...
this, of course, depends on your age.

Dark Souls is not a hard game. It tests your patience, and it can be tedious, but it's not hard. Enemy patterns are very easy to figure out, and the world is clearly connected. Just don't rush.

don't celebrate so early on in the game. you will feel serious pain at O+S.

I'm about to start playing this for the first time, and I'm having trouble deciding which gift to pick. I "cheated" a bit and looked them up, and it seems like the Master Key is the only truly useful one. However, do I really WANT TO be able to open all those doors the first time through, many of which are likely to lead to places I really don't want to be early on? I feel like it would probably just make the game more confusing and frustrating, given that I'm going into it practically blind. So would it not be better to let the game lead me through it the way it's intended? If so, which gift should I pick instead?

If you're playing for the first time, it may be better to skip the master key. It's more fun to get it on later runs, when you already know all the areas and you can discover shortcuts all over. btw you can buy the master key ingame later anyhow.

If you don't get the key, then the gift doesn't matter. Pick whatever you want

Thanks, that's what I figured. I bet the key is cool to have when you already know the game and are ready for some sequence breaking, but I think I'll skip it for now and just go with the intended flow of the game.

I'm actually playing through it at the moment (since it's "free" on Xbox 360). I dunno why but I don't connect to this game as much as I did with Demons Souls. That game had something special about and yet Dark Souls just annoys me. I don't find it hard but the camera is effing horrendous and the controls are terrible.
I'm going to continue playing it but I swear Demons Souls didn't feel as annoying as this. This is made by the same team right?

Enemy patterns seem wrong to me. You strafe around them and they follow you while attacking. They've have a spear that tracks in the motion that you're moving. Why?

I highly recommend you get another weapon if your using the drake sword. There will come a point where the weapon will cease to be effective anymore and you won't have any other way to deal with the enemies so find a weapon you like from the merchant or andre (merchant sells the reinforced club and its a very good weapon for the low requirements it has) and see which one you like and start upgrading it.

The controls are tighter than Demons and the camera is the same. You're just imagining shit, like most people who prefer Demons do :x

I've only started playing it recently myself. About to head down into the Tomb of the Giants after I finish this post. I had bought it on a Steam sale ages ago...but before I got a 360 controller for my PC. Anyone who tried to play it with keyboard and mouse will understand the bile-inducing disgust that instantly made me erase all trace of the game from my computer. A controller and DSFix improved everything.

Once I got through the Undead Parish, I think the game really began to warm to me. I had played Demon's Souls before, and while the bosses were really impressive, I just couldn't get into it otherwise. Had a tough time finishing Anor Londo without grinding, though, and then I really started to enjoy the grind when I noticed what a significant difference it was making to my character. Managed to smash Ornstein and Smough with Quelaag's Furysword +3 and a Silver Knight Straight Sword +5. So far, only the darkness of the Tomb of the Giants has given me difficulty since.

It's not a hard game: just oblique. It explains none of its systems to you, and very few objectives. Yet that is also very refreshing, and the arms-distance story is excused by the oodles of atmosphere. Overall, I think it's a shame that I didn't give it a chance when it came out, but at least that is being remedied now.

Dammit, I keep accidentally drinking my flasks! Too used to Square being attack in 3rd person action games, lol...

I just recently purchased this game on Steam and can say it was my instant game of last generation. I would like to point out a little annoyance though. Although I did do my research on the game, I was never aware of the Artorias of the Abyss DLC until after I completed it. I had to put about 15 or so extra hours into NG+ to open it up...and that was having to look at a guide to figure out how.

To the point, all new players with Prepare to Die edition, there's a DLC that's pretty spectacular, but you're probably not going to access it unless you do some research.

Where do I go? How do I know where to go?

I'm trying to give this game a chance but I prefer the Demons Souls layout of going back to the hub room. I have no idea where I'm going. It honestly feels like a cheap imitation of Demons Souls.

Look around? Try few paths yourself? Listen to what NPCs say?
What's so hard to figure out?

Where to go. Wandering aimlessly isn't fun. I found a new path. Cool what does that mean? Nothing. Again, I find the design choice for the levels to be terrible. The hub system for this style of gameplay works in Demons Souls. Take that away and it's wander around fighting stuff.

What the hell are you talking about?
It isn't a sandbox game, there aren't useless or wrong paths.
Every single one you find is a good one to take as far as you can manage what's on your way... And as I already said if you want "the most advisable one" you have just to listen to NPCs. The very first NPC you meet landing at Firelink Shrine, in fact, if we really need to be even more specific.

Again, I find the design choice for the levels to be terrible.
Except it's not. If anything, the level design/map layout is the absolute highlight of Dark Souls.

Well, I've certainly died a lot already! But they haven't felt like cheap deaths, I only have myself to blame. Part of it is also that I'm not quite used to the controls yet. But I'm having fun!

If you die again before getting to your stuff it's gone forever, right? Is it just souls you lose, or other stuff as well? No items or anything, right? I also haven't quite figured out this hollow/unhollow stuff. You become hollow when you die? What's bad about that, exactly, except that you then can't invade other players? Oh yeah, and you also can't kindle fires, right? Is hollow the same as undead, or are those different things?

And man, those big knight dudes... Am I supposed to be able to kill them yet? Because it feels really, really hard.

Not a Metroid player, I see.

You lose souls and humanity upon death, and failing to corpse run successfully.

When you die you're hallowing, which you can reverse at a bonfire for the price of a humanity. If you're human, you can be invaded, but you can kindle bonfires, and summon people for help if needed (including NPCs). The number of humanity you have in the corner of the HUD does affect a few of your stats positively.

Being hallowed and being undead are not the same, when someone is undead, they're hallowing, and within the lore, the more time spent hallowing moves you closer to being hallowed, which is being undead and having lost your mind, essentially.

I think that's it.

And you can leave the Black Knights for now.
