LTTP: Driver San Francisco thread of unexpected brilliance

The MP is just as brilliant as the SP. Make sure to dive in and give it a try. Probably the most fun I've had online all year.

It seems a few people are playing this currently so it seems appropriate to ask in this thread.

Anyone else having issues connecting to uPlay? I had no issue like a week or two ago when I got the game but didn't spend any of my uPlay points on the rewards (to unlock challenges) but starting yesterday or the day before it's not letting me log on. It would seem really odd that the problem would be specific to me but I figured I'd just double-check. It's giving me an error saying the uPlay servers are down. Did they unceremoniously shut down the servers on Driver: San Francisco exclusively or something?

That said, really enjoyable game. I'm only in Chapter Two but have enjoyed things a lot so far. The hardest thing is being in the mindset of jumping out of my car. Makes the missions where you're trying to damage racing cars a good bit of fun.

Edit: And if it matters, I'm on the 360 version.

Got this for a buck on PC during the Uplay sale and this game is fucking bananas! Would have been worth the 60. The only issue I have is a personal one; during free drive the game maintains a solid 60fps with no drops whatsoever. If any competitive AI shows up (cops, chases or any selectable driving mission with AI drivers) the game drops frames like Jerry McButterfingers the Optometrist. It does this no matter the graphics settings so I'm guessing it's my weak ass CPU (Athlon dual core 3ghz). Sometimes it's still within "perfectly playable" other times is kind of rough. Oh well.

I'm having PC performance problems with it as well. The framerate actually starts to die over time. I have to exit the game re-enter it in order for it to back to 60FPS. I am running on Windows 8 Release Preview, so that may be a factor but trying in Windows 7 has its own share of issues related to the game not recognizing the correct refresh rate of my HDTV and locking me to 24 FPS.

Oh, I had that problem too. Turns out I had to make a custom resolution of 1076 as opposed to 1080. Selected that resolution from the settings and no more 24fps bug. As a bonus it also fixed PoP, which had the same problem. I read on the steam forums that Driver has a memory leak which degrades performance over the span of a game session but my problem is tied directly to AI racers showing up, even if it's the first thing I do when I launch the game. I also read that it may be the game forcing on vsync (which it does) but even changing the .ini file and setting it to read only still had the vsync turn itself on whenever it felt like it. Weird. Still enjoying the game but I wish it wouldn't dip so bad, when it's running at 60 it's pure arcade awesome.

I started this last night.

I loved the original Driver, I remember it being one of the few games I've ever bought day one.

Really enjoying the game, and I love the variety of missions. I've barely touched the story so far, I've just been zipping about picking up side missions. So far it reminds me of a mix of Burnout Paradise and Stuntman Ignition (such an overlooked game).

Only had one problem so far, and that's getting away from the police. Back in the Driver days there was a mode that basically hurled police cars at you, and would time how long you could survive. I got a lot of play out of it, and was pretty good. In Driver SF though, I'm struggling to get away! Is there any secret to it that I'm missing? Admittedly, I've only played one cop chase mission, and that was before I learned boost.

I'm guessing sharp cornering is key, and possessing other drivers to crash into the cops. Any other tips?

Is there anything else I should know to get the most out of the game? I'm going to invest in the score multiplier early on to get my points up - anything else?

Probably the main thing I dislike about the game is how tough it is to lose the police. I've never been one for being chased, at least in this open city style. Usually I do best by lucky tight turns where the police AI bumbles too much or just wait until they inevitably squish next to me and then I try to ram them into oncoming traffic. Also, it seems that it gets easier later on with the better vehicles, but I suppose that makes too much sense.

Also, the multiplier seems to be extremely selective. Sometimes I get a large bonus and other times I get zero bonus. I'm not certain what determines it.

By of a bump, but I just dug this out of my cupboard while scraping together trade-in candidates. This thread makes me want to keep it, but is it child friendly? My son is enjoying NFS at the moment, and played a burnout paradise and split/second for ages. S he would probably want to play but language might be a bit excessive?

Yes, totally agree. Besides that one mode, where everyone doesn't play properly and only goes after trophies/achievements :/

S he would probably want to play but language might be a bit excessive?

There is cursing and it's quite a lot.
But you can't kill/hurt pedestrians.

Some buddies and I bought this over the summer for cheap and got hooked to it's multiplayer for quite a bit. Had alot of fun.

How old is he? Language didn't make an impression on me, but there's a villain in the story that could scare him... maybe. It's a fun game otherwise, and I don't remember any profanity.
