LTTP: Half -Life 2

Everytime I see this thread i get excited for Episode 3. I'm starting to imagine the beginning of that game. Since each episode takes place (roughly) 10 minutes after the last one ended, I can assume we'll be flying in a helicopter around the start. I hope that flight is as epic as the tour of the citadel in Half-Life 2. Flying out of the forest, over City 17and the citadel, to the shore, and then out to the ocean as we fly for artic waters.

I know it doesn't sound like much on paper, but set pieces and evironments are some of Valve's best strong points, and I know they're make it as memorable as possible. But, I'm off topic, sorry.

I think there will be at least a little mourning for Eli.

These two things no longer exist.

Beginning of Episode 2? (as far as I remember) ..Not sure if it's the exact same image though. Haven't played it since yesterday and my memory is short. :lol

Yeh, it's at the beginning of Episode 2. I'm not sure how you'd miss it..I think Alyx runs over and stands near the cliff edge for a while looking at it.

I could be imagining things though.

I think I missed it on my first playthrough...At least I couldn't remember that scene when I played the second time and saw it. :lol

Edit: now that I see the video I maybe just looked into the "wrong" direction. I remember getting nervous when she shouted something at me..and suddenly the bridge collapsed. :D

Oh, that. I think I always stared directly at the portal than the ruins all around. How weird.

That view and scene (when you see that portal storm) is so damn good. It's the set pieces and stuff like that really which makes HL2 so good, imho.

I bought HL2 together with the orange box like 5 months ago, but never beat it.. I don´t have the motivation to go on any further... Just in case you wanna know, I am in city 17 (i think) where I have to lead these rebels to do something. IMO really boring.
Another problem for me are the weapons, I dont feel any satisfaction killing somebody, they don´t feel right.

How can you miss all of that? It's a bit obvious, and you can't even progress without looking at it and triggering the portal storm!

God, the story is amazing now that I think of it. I'm replaying half life 1 with a buddy and the 'silent' story is great.
The marines coming to kill off the whole project, the Xen portal, Xen itself, vortigaunts imprisoned.
The coming back of the resonance cascade like in hl1 in hl2ep2 is nice and the whole universe is amazing.

Is it just me or does Half-Life 2 seem to have more people who COMPLETELY MISS THE POINT on GAF than any other game? These threads are usually crawling with insanity like this.

Keep on going. THat's easily the worst level in the game, and it gets much much better from there (especially in the episodes).

City 17 is amazing - to me - I loved HL2 and ate the orange box all up. I sped through all the different chapters, maybe I had it on too easy a difficulty level, but I didnt care. I was having a blast.

I loved the eerie atmosphere of City 17; the tension in the City was palpable. I would stand and watch the radio/TV broadcasts when I could and soak it all in, I was very sad when it all ended.

HL2 is the pinnacle of game story-telling and it is a good yarn.

it's kind of frustrating when I read stuff like that, but to be fair, HL2 threads on GAF are usually some the BEST threads on GAF.

The fans are the right level of obsessive, not too embarrassing/annoying, but interesting nonetheless. Makes for some good discussions, I reckon. :lol

Also I think some people need to remember that HL2 was released almost FIVE years ago.

i've not had a shooting game experience that was, in total, as impressive since, apart from the episodes (though i am taking everything related to HL2, at this point, as one big game).

it has little flaws, but it's more than the sum of its parts.

The Half life franchise is my favorite of all time. I remember the first time i played hl1, my cousin brought it over and installed it on my computer. i was about 15 at the time, and that was probably the defining gaming experience for me, and i was hooked after that. I can still remember playing through it for the first time, just incredible. Changed my perception of gaming completely. bought all of the expansions after that.

But what's frustrating about it? I can completely see why someone would think so. The parts where you lead a squad has some very obvious issues, with the allies constantely getting stuck or blocking your way.

it seems nitpicky and very much "can't see the forest for the trees" mentality to me. of all the things that the game does so right, a little technical bullcrap issue seems (to me) like criticizing a restaurant for the way the knife handle feels a little funny in your hand, overlooking how tasty the food is.

beelz just summed that up way, way more elegantly than I could have at this time of night

What is nitpicky? The squad thing? The issues with that is pretty obvious when playing but no, it doesn't spoil the game for me.

I like HL2 and both the episodes, but I do think there are gameplay issues there--some more apparent and some not. What makes me like the game so much is, just like I explained earlier, the set pieces/atmosphere and story. As far as gunplay goes you can definitely find better games now in that regard (considering that HL2 was released five years ago).

yep, agree with you about the shooting stuff. i just don't value that stuff as much as the atmosphere and inventiveness of puzzles and scenarios--two fields in which HALF-LIFE destroys other games, for the most part (a few exceptions inch close to it, but never exceed it for me)

Ohlol, funny that, I'm playing the game with a buddy too. He's a little slow though.

I love the atmosphere of the game, the complete feeling of desolation and solace, navigating through the constantly unwelcoming and uncomfortable maze which is Black Mesa. I think I know why I enjoy it so much, because it is pretty much the closest 3D interpretation to Super Metroid. Even more than the Prime series, IMO.

And I remember in the developer commentary of Ep 2, the developers noted that they added specific visual cues to make the player notice the Portal storm, such as Alyx explicitly standing right in front of it. The reason was it took 2 of the developers about 3 months to program, and they didn't want the player to miss it by looking at a rock...

DieNgamers + rock 1, Valve 0 :lol :lol :lol

Alright, just finished Episode 1 earlier today and guess what......I loved it:lol IMO Ep1>HL2

The thing I was most impressed by was Alyx. She never actually got in the way and instead was a huge help.

The start where Dog throws you over to the citadel is awesome, felt like one of those virtual roller coaster rides. The actual citadel level was interesting and had some nice puzzles. Listening to the developer commentary after playing really tells you the genius of the people at Valve. Putting a lone soldier to attract the player's attention so they would then focus on the dropship and follow it across the screen until it crashed. Stuff like that makes me feel like a puppet on a string:lol

The underground section freaked me out mainly because I'm a big scaredycat. The darkness + zombie noises gave me shivers. Surrounded by enemies, battery levels falling and Alyx shouting at me to shine the light, these situations made me love this section.

The hospital section was ok, only memorable thing were the Combine vs Zombine action.

Escorting the citizens was tedious but none of mine died so I'm satisfied. Strider battle was awesome.

I can't even imagine playing the game firing only one bullet, what a challenge I will probably never do:D

Now onwards to Episode 2!

And people get banned for saying the game looked like it came out of 1998. :D

Not with the apocalypse fast-approaching.

One thing I really love about Valve is that, in addition to making something available like The Orange Box, which has some of the best games of the decade, is their inclusion of developer commentary. It's always great to hear the voice actors speak about developing the character and what the developers did to get the player to notice a particular event or how they led the player on. But I really love how they talk about playtesters. I understand they're a pretty important part of the process, but the commentary makes them sound like idiots.

So, so true.

I really loved hearing Merle Dandridge's commentary during Episode 2. It was great hearing about her involvement and experiences. Plus her performance in the game itself was fantastic.

I hope that for Ep.3, we get to hear Gordon's VA in the commentary.

I liked hearing GLaDOS' VA commentary in Portal. Interesting stuff.

:lol I still can't believe how brush trigger + Alyx standing there + Alyx pointing and saying LOOK + ALYX EVEN FUCKING SHOUTING PORTAL STORM made some people miss the portal storm :lol

Also lol my buddy tends to let pee out when he's with headcrabs in airducts.

I can't believe you were LTTP to the original. I have never been so disappointed in anyone in my life.
I seem to recall you finding this out several times before ;)

But to be serious, I would have been eight years old in 1998, much too young to be playing Half-Life (I wouldn't have been allowed to go anywhere near it, and I woulda shit myself for real :lol ).

And aha, you even posted in my lttp thread!
http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=14287910&postcount=29

HL2's better in my mind in large part to what you talked about in that post, it blew my mind and completely changed what I thought of First Person Shooters and of their potential.

I love Half Life 2...

I need the Orange Box because I've never played E1 or E2.

Damnit.

I've seen a retail bundle of the episodes for $10 in some stores. But if you haven't played Portal and/or TF2, then yes get The Orange Box.

Having played through the original Half-Life only months prior to the release of Orange Box, I was really excited to play the sequel. But for some reason, Half-Life 2 has never gelled well with me. I never really enjoyed it as much as the original. But because I had only played up until "Water Hazard", I thought that I should shelve the game, simply play something else, and then come back to it at a later time. And I did, one year later. Now, I've gone through the majority of "Sandtrap" and I still haven't gotten much enjoyment out of the game. For this very reason, I feel like I'm missing something. What could be the issue here?

you lack a soul?

that, or the tricks the game uses to draw people in aren't working on you for whatever reason.

I'd still stick out the game, because when I first played up to an including Sandtrap, I didn't think the game was "OMG SO FANTASTIC". I didn't totally fall in love with it until I finished it, and looked back on my time with it.

But yeah, if you're not enjoying yourself, don't force yourself to keep playing. But if you're not HATING it, it might be worth sticking with.

I'm not hating it, I'm just indifferent. But based on what you've said, I think I'll continue onwards and finish the game.

HL2 and to a lesser extent, the episodes, have a very different kind of pacing than most games. It's in my top 5 franchises, and definitely my favorite FPS series. That said, I understand that the pacing is not for everyone. It takes a little while to get on on the same page as the game.

For some reason, I tend to enjoy the games more on the second playthough. You really get an appreciation for the scope of what Valve accomplishes and the little touches that put them above and beyond everyone else.

Finished HL2:EP2

Freaking Awesome..... Blah, blah, blah. It's all been said before, great game, go play it those who haven't.
