LTTP - Kameo: Elements of Power

I can't say I liked the game very much. I never finished it and I just didn't really feel any need to. There was nothing really engrossing about the game. It felt like playing a Dreamworks movie as opposed to a Pixar one, and I found the visuals very off-putting. Far too shiny and no real style.

This game was the most fun I had on my 360 in the 2 years I had it before I sold it in 2008. Massively overlooked and underrated title, so much so that its criminal.

The game got lost in the hype of the 360 launch and wasn't fairly reviewed due to rediculously high expectations. Funny thing is, if the game was released now rather than at launch it'd get better reviews and it'd have a bigger following.

Yeah it's weird that a launch game is one of the best looking games on the system, at 1080p on my set the game is still breathtaking...the game was also a very good and fun experience overall.

Hopefully we'll see a sequel announcement soon.

I was actually referring to the truism that Dreamworks movies lack that certain something in comparison to Pixar's offerings. Every movie stands on its own, some are better and some are worse, no matter which company makes them. For instance, I prefer The Incredibles to every Dreamworks movie, but I also prefer Antz to every other Pixar movie.

Anyway, I apologize for this off-topic rant, please move along.
 
i bought kameo years ago for $10. it's an okay game but not great by any means and maybe one of rares worst. looks fantastic though.

It was shat on and generally doesn't get much love on here. I think it was a pretty good game with fantastic graphics. I don't see why it deserved to be shat on at all.
 
Agreed, really good OP.

There is only one thing that I think was downplayed a bit too much: how good the original score REALLY is. Its simply one of the most amazing you will ever hear and, as the OP hinted at, severely affected my enjoyment of Twilight Princess, as I played Kameo the month before TP. The moment you first enter the Badlands and go riding on your steed through a HUGE army of trolls listening to THIS track blaring through a surround sound system ..... its a moment I'll never forget. As stated in the OP, it makes everything feel more epic than it actually is and its a really cool feeling.

Enjoyed the game. Great launch title for sure and recommended for those that enjoy action/adventure games.
 
Bought the game for $5 two weeks ago. I didn't play much. I finished the forest temple and just got Ash. I love it so far. Beautiful art, good voice acting, amazing soundtrack and really impressive graphics for a launch game. I'm looking forward to go back to it this week. :D

I don't agree. There aren't many games like it anymore, especially on the Xbox.
 
I'm just playing this game now. I've just finished the water temple part. Steering the blue underwater dude around vs those metal sharks was a hoot. I've not had as much fun playing a game in a long time. Lovely graphics, and generally a lot of fun. It reminds me a lot of zelda OoT on the n64.

Great to hear you're enjoying the game - especially considering you liked the water temple which is almost universally one of the major gripes people have with the game.

The next area is pretty brilliant, particularly the temple, so look forward to that. :)
 
Kameo's still a superbly well crafted and absolutely beautiful game in my opinion.

The art direction and multitude of characters you can play as make it a winner in my book. I just loved the variety of the levels, the fun combat, platforming, and especially just all the colors. The Enchanted garden area and pond was especially breathtaking when I first played it back in 2005.

Hell, still looks awesome to this day.

Too bad...really would love a sequel...one of the better 360 exclusives in my opinion =/
 
I really enjoyed this game, I was kind of obsessed with it when it came. I spent ridiculous amounts of time playing it. The presentation is so great.

The game actually feels whimsical and hits all the right notes, I wish this game had been given a better chance because it is just so unique and really shows what Rare is good at.
 
Good post Even all this time later. This game is the last truly great Rare game. So many people didn't even give it a chance. It just pisses me off that a sequel was canned for this amazing gem of a game.
 
I basically liked every current gen Rare game besides Perfect Dark. They all had something different and interesting to offer while having a colourful and sometimes exotic presentation. Which makes it a shame that they haven't offered me anything since Nuts & Bolts.
 
After playing Skylanders a bit I was reminded of this game so I decided to come back to Kameo to do a run-through and I was shocked at how good it holds up. Is it just that we as gamers have lowered our standards this generation? Were our standards too high for the new generation when this game came out? This is an amazing adventure game that I once scoffed at. There are towns with people going about their business, interesting boss fights, 10 transformations with upgradable characters, and interesting secrets to find. It has this family game vibe mixed with gameplay and ‘violence’ that makes it enjoyable for all groups.
If you’ve never played this game and you like Zelda-ish adventure games you owe it to yourself to spend the $5 to get it.
 
Was intrigued by the gamecube version of the game, but the videos of the 360 version killed all the hype I had.
Ended up buying the game because I absolutely love the music, and decided it was worth a shot. The bland art and gameplay never pushed me to finish it though, but I still listen to the music regularly.

The GCN version had some great lava:

Remember playing this on a demo unit when the console launched and being really stunned by the grass.
 
one thing i think that helps Kameo hold up visually as well as it does is that the game features high res textures with solid bump mapping. even today lots of releases feature pretty low resolution assets. high res textures really help paste over the cracks that other games start to show with age as lighting and poly counts et al date.

full 720p framebuffer usage (and i think it had some good MSAA) certainly help it hold up as well.

Yeah, it feels like we've gone a bit back from the start of this gen. In Kameo we had all you said, 100s of Ogres on screen and amazing depth of field. DOA4 had highly detailed graphics, 60fps, online records, lobbies, 2on2 online and so much other stuff that no fighter has matched still. PDZ (yes i know it's hated) but it's still top tier in terms of content. 32 player online, online bots, bot replacement, secondary fire on every weapon, specialised game modes, Even a L4D style mode which seems to have exploded in popularity recently.

We'll see these features again early next-gen, only to have them dissapear at some point. And then devs will hype them yet again at the start of another gen.
 
Had a 360 at launch. It was a pretty good game for a launch title, nothing to write home about. I would have preferred to see what Rare could have done with a title like Voodoo Vince or Blinx at launch.
 
Played through this about 2 years ago and thought it was jolly good. Gameplay was merely alright, but it was fun and looked great. Still impressed with those scenes that had hundreds of trolls/ogres/whatevertheywere on screen.

Bloody shame they have Rare making feckin avatar handbags and the like these days. Lots of talent going to waste.
 
Does this game suffer from rare style collectathons?

Ive always been interested in the game but then I get flashbacks of DK64's 200 golden bananas.
 
This is honestly still one of the best looking platformer-type games I've seen on the 360. I remember people saying that the first ratchet and clank on the ps3 blew it away but after playing that recently, I still think Kameo looks much more impressive
 
This game has some of the worst art I think I've ever seen. It's like they asked a 6 year old to draw some fairies and monsters and make some fantasy locations and called it a day.
 
This thread makes me sad. Kameo is still one of my favorite 360 exclusives, and with Rare stuck at making Kinect games and key people leaving the company it's not likely that they'll ever make a game like this again.
 
I thought the game was pretty solid,good fun. One of the best looking games still. Great fantasy settings, and some really unique bosses. Wish we could have a sequel someday.
 
I loved it. Still one of the best looking games around too. Short, but memorable to me. The DLC costumes were some of the best I've ever seen too. Odd thing to say but it was pretty neat how all the different animal spirits had weird variations of their original outfits.

The OST has to be in the top ten soundtracks of all time. It's that good.

Wow... this game is almost 7 years old and still looks good IMO.

it's also the only 360 launch title aside from ridge racer 6 that i keep (i bought every single dlc for RR6... too much good music to let go lol)
 
I enjoyed the game, despite the control issues and shortness of it. But I have to say, the thing I hated most was the overworld. I've never seen an overworld as useless and annoying to navigate as that since Twilight Princess.
