Dj. Irv aka. Irving Lorenzo was a local Queens DJ working with underground prodigies like Mic Geronino, and producing tracks for other established artists like Jay Z, Foxy Brown, and DMX.

It wasn't until the late '90s when he formed Murder Inc Records, a record label within the parent Def Jam, mainly composed of his fellow-Queens rapper Ja Rule, the "queen of R&B" Ashanti, Cadillac Tah, Blackchild, and Charli Baltimore.

The label broke out with Ja Rule's debut LP, and kept producing some of the most famous hits of the early 21st century. Ja Rule starred in the first The Fast and The Furious movie, and he even did a song with Metallica

The awards and the platinum plaques kept coming until mid-2003, when a beef was ignited against 50 Cent/Dre/Eminem's label, Aftermath Records and it was after several federal investigations, drug allegations, a name change, and a dozen of beef tracks later, the label slowly but steadily fell into total obscurity.

Honestly, i think that they don't get the credit they deserve. Yes, Ja Rule accused of going pop-rap after his first album, but 50 Cent went by the same formula a couple of years later after he broke out. Overall they had a decent run and they were one the prime forces contributing to Def Jam's revival in the late '90s.

Ja Rule's first album is legitimately great. I even liked the Pop Rap stuff of his next two albums. Especially the Pain is Love album.

Eh, I feel most of their catalogue has aged poorly and history has treated them correctly.

Ja Rule is one of the artists I go back to and think "...How did I listen to this?"
