Lucasfilm hired acting coach for Han Solo star's performance

You know what's funny about Ewan as Obi Wan, he does a good impression of Alec at times but is he actually good as Obi Wan except looking a bit cool.

It's kinda like that kid who did one of Harrison Ford.

I suppose Ewan is a good actor in comparison obviously but his Obi Wan isn't exactly, give me more status. He rocks a good beard, good actor and that's it really.

Find it funny that people keep saying have no one wants a Han Solo yet at the same time keep clamoring for an Obi wan film, ever though both have the same fundamental problems

Not really.

Harrison Ford is ICONIC as Han Solo. They are not extricable from one another.
When we met Obi Wan, he was an old man far past his prime. There was a lot of promise in the idea of seeing the warrior he once was.

Han Solo is arguably in his prime DURING the original trilogy. He's already pretty young when we meet him, so a slightly younger version played by a different actor is going to be fucking weird no matter how good the movie is.

An Obi Wan solo movie will probably not take place very long after Episode 3, placing him firmly in Ewan McGregor territory.

This is all fine but when the fuck is the Max Rebo musical happening?

Everyone loves Stars Wars, Musicals and Max Rebo, its free money.

Do it.

It's not even remotely the same "problem". Han/Ford is an icon and Ewan was actually welcomed and generally praised by fans. He was one of the few components of the PT that was pretty much universally enjoyed.

Which is why you saw a fuck ton of people calling for an Obi movie and literally no one asking for a Han spin-off, when Lucasfilm announced they'd be doing SW story films.

There is still time Lucasfilm/Disney, cancel this and make an Obi-Wan movie instead. This guy is ready to go:

Obi-Wan, paranoid that the Empire is close to finding Luke, steals him from Uncle Ben and Aunt Beru. He flies to a nearby system and contacts the Rebels, but when a group arrives, it's the Empire in disguise. He clumsily fights them as he tries to get his lightsaber techniques back, while baby Luke climbs into the pilot seat and takes out the nearby Star Destroyer with the help of the Force. Owen follows in pursuit, and Darth Maul follows him. Hijinks ensue, blah blah blah.

Han is a completely different situation because people are content with Ford doing that character for three full films. They didn't feel like they wanted or needed more from him, or wonder what goes backstory was. Obi-Wan is a old wise wizard who has a much smaller role. His backstory is largely mysterious and untouched in the OT. It made SENSE to put him in more films.

And it makes sense to put him in another because he was wasted potential in a sea of shit.

Why would they NOT applause?

The boss has a meeting with the crew, announces the new director, you think people will just sit there with crickets chirping? In any work environment people will applaud.

I think people are reading way too much into that quote. I read it as the crew just being polite and respectful for the change-over, perhaps even being excited that someone as high profile as Howard was coming in for the last few weeks of filming.

I'm sure they weren't applauding in celebration of an end to Lord and Miller's hideously incompetent reign of terror, or something.

Yeah, uh, about that...

THR updated their article.

June 26, 4:15 p.m. A previous version of this article stated that the crew of the Han Solo spinoff broke into applause following the announcement of Ron Howard as director. In fact, these sources say the applause came at the end of the meeting in which the departure of Lord and Miller was announced and they were informed a new director would be arriving.

You joke (I think) but I'm still betting on the standalone Obi Wan film tying into Episode VIII or IX somehow. We'll get some revelation that will open the door for backstory, and Disney trots out the standalone Obi Wan film to fill in the gaps and possibly even plant something for an upcoming saga film.

I put more effort into it but then deleted it and went with the blah blah instead. I'm totally cool with an Obi-Wan movie, if done right, it could be incredible. Didn't they say there would be announcements for the future movies during the summer? D23 is pretty soon, hopefully it comes then. Just trot out Ewan and do it already!

God's had his chance.
If Hand Solo doesn't scream "SMMMMOOOOOOKING!!!" somewhere in this movie it's a gigantic steaming failure turd full of mary sues and midichlorians ...

Also he cut open a wookie for warmth and when he climbs inside he finds another wookie like a russian doll and they cuddle and it forms a "Life-Bond" (trademark pending) and they can't find any knives and the body rolled over so they have to bite their way out the back of the beast. Han and his feeble human mandibles can't handle it but his new best friend? Gets them free in a parsec or whatever and BAM

Chewie.

I'll take my billion dollars now, thankyewverymuch

(this movie no one asked for sounds like a fuckin trainwreck. I can't wait.)

Really haven't been a fan of this yearly franchise shit Disney/Lucasfilm is doing with star wars

Rogue One was just an extremely bland and forgettable movie and this Han Solo movie was not only a wack idea since it's inception but it's sounding more and more like it won't turn out so good.

Plus the hiring of trevorrow for episode 9 was some more underwhelming news to come out of this franchise

I had major reservations from this movie from the get-go. Don't get me wrong, I love the character of Han, but to me, his story was complete with TFA. Going back now and doing one/off stories, with someone that lacks the charm of Ford (no one can match Ford's presence as Han). No offense to the person they cast as Han, but those are impossible shoes to fill.

Add in the director replacement, and now this, I really hope I am wrong in these assessments.

It always amazes how you guys say this as if it's fact. Unless you have polling data I'm unaware of, we have no idea what the draw of a young Han Solo would be.

Now I wonder who might have such data? Hmmmm.

Do we have any real evidence of people calling for a young Han or even any Han film at all, since the end of ROTJ? You're right, it's not fact. But Obi, on the other hand, has generated quite a bit of buzz from fans in terms of getting Ewan back in the role.

I hadn't heard of a single person, on this forum or elsewhere, calling for a Han film of any kind.

If any interest is out there, I'd love to see it.

I also like to see a polling data comparison for fan interest.

Ewan on Jimmy Kimmel:

"It's got to the point where I've been asked this question so many times and I answer questions when I'm asked them because I've been brought up like that, it's polite"

I really wish they could think of a new story to tell in this fucking universe

Dexter Jettster origin movie.

I have no interest in a Han Solo movie so I'll be missing this either way. I'm damn on board for an Obi Wan movie though. Ewen has earned the right to be in a good Star Wars movie.

I am laughing at Bobby's numerous saltposts in this thread. For some reason it's funny when Bobby gets combative.

I provide insecure boys a glorious purpose.

Their days burn just a teensy bit brighter when they can have some backchannel bitch session with likeminded bros.

The post-game high-fives from today's lace-lashing will nourish their souls for the very fair price of mere moments of my day

I give them gladly.

I mean... Ewan will be fine either way. I just get bored with all this lore plumbing. They aren't real people, they have no histories. They should trying to catch that falling star and just set out to make a good fucking movie with laser swords and shit.

So its looks like the success of their past movies really got to L&M's head.

Reminds me of Michael Cimino...

That is of course how Lucasfilm will spin it. We will probably not hear the whole story for decades, if ever.

Found George Lucas' GAF account. Nobody else could come up with something so bad.

http://ew.com/movies/2017/06/22/ron-howard-takes-over-directing-duties-on-han-solo-film/

UPDATE (6/26): Other sources have come forward to clarify — although Lord and Miller were indeed going off-script to create new dialogue and action, there is disagreement over whether they were adding humor.

One person with knowledge of the dispute said they were clashing with Lucasfilm over changes to the script made spur-of-the-moment during filming. “But improvisation in this case does not always mean comedy,” the source said.

If there was a genre the directors were trying to impose upon the Han Solo film, it was more of a western than screwball comedy, according to this source, who added that had Lord and Miller wanted to shift the tone to humor, they wouldn’t have hired cinematographer Bradford Young, who is known for dramas like Arrival and A Most Violent Year.

Another individual close to the movie agrees it wasn’t a question about how much comedy would be in the film. While there are many variations on the reason for the clash, the consensus now is that the filmmakers were encouraging significant improvisation from the actors, which some at Lucasfilm believed was shifting the story off-course. (End update.)

So I guess Lord and Miller aren't the right pick for when the vision doesn't belong exclusively to the directors.

From the exact same updated paragraph you quoted from:

Yes, but we all know that's a nonsense quote meant to sugarcoat it.

"They applauded when they found out Lord & Miller were fired, but it's just because they support the movie!" Come on now.

There is no other way to take applause as a reaction to Lord & Miller being fired other than happiness that they were gone.
