Lumines - 1up.com review

I'm not saying they're entitled to their own opinions, but their reviews should at least have the aire of being platform independent.

If Lumines was released on DS in the same capacity (I know, I know, the screen isn't nearly as beautiful, but just hypothetically here), would the 1UP guys have given it a 9.6?

I really feel like a professional reviewer puts his personal opinions aside when he's writing a review of a product. What I'm getting at here is that there is no way they can justify giving Lumines a higher score than they know it deserves because they want to make the PSP launch lineup look as attractive as possible.

I think the PSP has a fine launch lineup as is, without their inevitable ass kissing. I just don't find it professional that they throw their personal opinions around so liberally. At least, how can we be expected to compare their review scores cross platforms at all?

Can someone please elaborate the details on how this can go on and the 1UP people still be legitimate journalists in all this?

I think you should pose this question to the Videogame Ombudsman.

Sure I'll trust their PSP reviews. But first I'll take them along with a grain of salt, which I'll hold in my hand and then SHOVE IN MY FUCKING EYE.

Actually, if anything, the idiot who reviewed this game is biased in favor of the DS and considers most of the PSP launch lineup a complete waste. He just happens to think Lumines is completely frigging awesome.

Do enjoy your salt though. It makes ill-informed generalizations go down smoooooove.

Lumines is fun as you get better at it, the music is indeed awesome, and you find yourself totally sucked into it even though the game mechanics are extra simple. Still, when you get really good at it you have to block out an hour+ of time to play a full game if not 2 hours. And honestly, that's just a weird level of commitment needed for a puzzle game for me at least. It's probably because of this that I haven't played it in a month.

It also would've helped if they had some sort of shuffle mode of previously beaten levels just so you don't have to hear the same music in the same order. There's so much music worth listening to in this game but you end up hearing the Level 1 music far more than the later levels, whose music is harder to come by.

Actually I don't like puzzle games. But I tried lumines and I can say that this is one of the best games of all time. Pure art.

It grows on you and some days later you'll be dreaming with falling blocks. :)

Whine whine whine.

Oh, and Meteos has a terrible game crushing gameplay flaw! Now go cry some more ;)

If you feel that way you can always play the vs. mode, which is difficult enough to always be challenging, and short enough to always be accessible.

A review is a personal opinion. If your personal opinion is that Lumines fucking rocks, that's what you put in your review. And frankly, I'm happy that these people keep blogs telling us their personal viewpoints on consoles and shite. You never get such frank honesty from magazines, they're too busy pandering to people who would cry at the first sense of reality.

Toastyfrog! I just said that to tell you that you should post more.

the mechanics of Lumines is as simple as it gets, the control is ridiculously basic but the music, the groove, the fact that i bob my head in public while playing this game is what makes it so awesome.

judging the game as a puzzler i give it an 8, but tag on the experience and i can see why it's a 9

Not with the superior sound of the PSP.

They couldn't do Meteos on the PSP (at all)

They couldn't do Lumines on the DS (correctly)

A review is a personal opinion

A review that sets aside a personal opinion is anything BUT professional

Lumines has been in these people's hands for months and they are still compelled to play it not because it's a PSP game but because it's appearantly an honest to miyamoto damn good game

If you fail to see how Lumines can be worthy of this score (or the multitude of positive impressions and reviews) and you have never played the game before then you need to re-evaluate the validity of your views along with your posting habits in Lumines threads because depending on how you word your posts it implies a fanboy intention, a general sense of idiocity, or (at worst) makes you appear to be trolling

Thanks. I will just as soon as someone tacks a few extra hours onto the day. Right now I only have time to leave lurk mode to throat-punch people who accuse me of liking the PSP. The nerve!

You couldn't do the controls, but you could do the aspect ratio. I already know of a couple of PSP games that let you play vertically.

Haha. You better not come here too often... there are entire threads dedicated to ripping apart reviews that people don't agree with!

Aren't the 1UP guys the ones with blogs? Blogs where they go so far as to say they hate the DS? I don't know about you, but any publication that lets its reviewers go so far as to say they "hate" an entire platform of game development on their own servers really isn't going to be trusted when that platform's competitor is launched. At least not in my book.

Sure I'll trust their PSP reviews. But first I'll take them along with a grain of salt, which I'll hold in my hand and then SHOVE IN MY FUCKING EYE.

Hey junior, I'd like you to point out where I've ever said I hate the DS on my blog, fuck you very much.

I CAN'T WAIT ANYMORE! I want my goddamn PSP already. *passes out*
