Lumines looks great, bizarre style and all, I love that. Hopefully we'll get a bunch of impressions come next week or so. I'm really looking forward to it.

Agreed. Sure way to turnoff fans of the series. Oh well, hopefully it doesn't suck as much as it seems like it will. I do enjoy the MG games. PEACE.

Hahahaha, MGS for the GBC is the #2 game ever on Gamerankings.

Shut up, Kojima!

That's a 2D MG that was only given the Solid name to make it sell in the US (in Japan its MG: Ghost Babel). He's referring to 3D MG's that have different mechanics than a 2D one.

apperantly the fact that its turn based has to do with the psp's battery life.
a proper mgs title requires constant streaming from the diskdrive, witch would drain the battery alot faster then the current turn based setup.

What a piece of crap system the PSP seems to be from a developer's standpoint. Hopefully this will encourage more than ports...

Okay, then I blame the analog nub.

The MGS series was built around the PS controller. Now you've got the PSP that has 2 less buttons, no analog buttons, and 1 less analog stick. People complained about the GC set up and it only had 1 less button, now imagine it with all that missing.

How about simplifying the controls a bit, changing the entire game seems a bit drastic. Also MGS played just fine without analog on the ps1.

Dig MGS1 require the DualShock? I honestly don't remember....

I remember it was one of the first games to utilize rumble features in an interesting way, but I don't know if it was playable w/ the standard PSX controller.

That's the biggest load of crap I've ever heard.

I'm pretty sure there was another reason they chose to use cards.

i have little interest in a card game, but i don't think a proper mgs would be appropriate for the psp either. the gbc was far enough removed from the psx that its metal gear could be a different, valid thing. a psp metal gear would just be a bowdlerized version of the console games, with compromised graphics and controls. and is a portable appropriate for games with lengthy cutscenes and codec conversations? particularly a portable without much battery life to spare?

ANALOG BUTTONS, not analog stick. MGS1 didn't have a first person mode, so analog buttons wasn't needed.

What?! They're making a Final Fantasy Tactical game?! That'll never work! Its gotta be crap because its not in the tradition of the rest of the series!

Fuck Lumines looks awesome. Only real reason I'm getting a PSP at the moment.

Hey where's xsarien? Figured he's chime in by now.

MGS1 was playable just fine with D-Pad, and definitely didn't require right analog stick or analog buttons. So there really are no excuses for not bringing a proper MGS games on PSP, which has an analog stick control surely good enough for simple directional movement. The lack of two shoulder buttons could be alleviated so easily by simple design changes, that I won't even bother to type what would be required for it. In other words, Kojima is BS'ing here a bit, and we won't hear the real reason why ACID is what is.

That's not true. MGS games don't stream constantly, except for the voices in codec scenes and cutscenes - they could simply go with no voices, and be done with it. ACID doesn't have any voices during codec either.

Anyways, screw all that, Lumines look f'n awesome!

I forget where, but I read the reason for going turn based, according to one of the producers, is that the idea of sneaking around would be hard to do in a portable game since you might be playing the game at a time where you had to end the game quickly or some other nonsense.

I still say it's bullshit. Whatever the game, if there's cards involved, I stay the fuck away.

Have you ever actually given any card battle games a fair shot? I'm turned off by real life Magic-card nerds and their whole scene too, but I've found that most of the video game card-battle games that I've played have been great addictive fun.

It's a little disheartening how much people resist change in their beloved series around these parts. I think MGS + cards could make for some real hilarity, not to mention potentially a really cool game. I don't think they'd just pull it out of their asses for the sake of angering people - maybe they have a good idea here that we won't really "get" until we play it? I predict it'll be awesome.

Lumines looks so great, by the way. 2p "love mode" is awesome!

Yes it did. A first person mode was added into Metal Gear Solid Integral (Japanese only release which was MGS with the English dub, plus the VR missions disc). :)

Yes. More than I care to really list. I just don't like card games. I find most of them arbitrary, too difficult, slow and exceptionally boring.

Granted, I also dislike RPGs, and I suck at/find boring traditional card games like Poker, so that might explain a few things as well.

Let's hope so. Otherwise, good luck with those RPG's, Square-Enix.

It probably explains something about me too, as I'm a pretty big fan of traditional card and board games and play them with family and friends as often as possible - often more than I play video games, in fact. I guess that probably at least partially explains why I enjoy their video game counterparts (Mario Party, PSOIII, Pokemon Card Battle, etc) so much. There's something about that long, drawn-out, methodical, turn-based competition that I can really get into.

Yah the pacing of card battle games is the biggest turn off for me. They're generally really slow paced which I don't like. There hasn't really been enough released on MG:A to judge how fast or slow it'll be.

I'm interested in exactly what Kojima means when he says that this is the most stylish game in the series since both Twin Snakes and MGS3 are very stylish. Here's the story set up for those that don't know it:

Solid should be in his late 40's in this game.

It is worth noting that the producer of MGA is the same producer of Ring Of Red. So there is hope it can turn out a pretty and fresh strategy game (I've never heard of a strategy *stealth* game. So this is gonna be interesting).
