Unfortunately, a lot of people will take for granted that the news did its job in investigating.

I don't blame the people who gave, they thought they were helping someone out that the news said had a rough time.
 
I have a compulsive liar friend. All his lies tend to involve non-existent sexual escapades and gambling winnings.

We haven't caught him lying about more serious stuff yet, but you never know.

My sister used to do stuff extremely similar to this, telling her friends she was raped, that my brothers and I would beat her, that she was homeless. Then all those lies came out when I met her friends and they were super angry at me and I we all had a good laugh at her for her stupid lies.

That's a shame, her story was quite heartwarming due to the outpouring of support from people. The fact she lied to receive that support is incredibly shitty. It will make people less likely to give in to their generous side which is the biggest tragedy of this. Fuck her lying ass for that.
 
I have a friend who was a compulsive liar... Or at least we thought. He must have turned things around. We used to call him Missouri _____ (removed his name). Because Missouri is the show me state. I think he may have grown out of it.

As a former compulsive liar, I can almost guarantee he/she already has lied about serious stuff. Most of the petty lies you'll pick up on, but if you ever feel sympathy for him/her because of some sad situation they were in recently, they're lying to you. It's all about manipulation.

I somewhat hate and somewhat sympathize with this girl. She lied about some pretty messed up stuff and put a black mark on a topic that really needs to be addressed. Having said that, she's doing all of this for attention. Most likely it was because she grew up in an abusive household and the only way for her to feel loved was to accomplish something. After a while, to feel more love she made stuff up. Then things snowballed.

I'm certainly projecting, but it's also something I've noticed in other compulsive liars since making an active effort to investigate my lies and to stop lying. It's been about two years since I felt the need to lie. It honestly comes down to hitting rock bottom and from there realizing that being honest means being honest with yourself first. The rest will follow.

Yeah, that's really the worst thing. Honestly I can forgive and forget as well as the next guy, but when you make it more difficult for actual instances of bigotry to reach the national spotlight without having people ask "is this real or fake like the last time?", well, she can fuck herself.
 
Why is her compulsive lying being exposed just now? I guess her friends were fine with her getting away with it until her story started falling apart and now they feel the need to expose her or else they'll look bad too.
 
Knowing a compulsive lair, it's hard to imagine them having actual friends. You cannot trust them in the slightest, and it can be very difficult to separate their "condition" from their dishonest, insulting and often dickish behavior towards everyone they encounter. Even if they seem like great people at first, by the time you are close enough to become a good friend it's generally apparent that they are full of shit.

A Michigan woman accused of lying for years about having cancer was convicted Thursday in a separate case of falsely accusing two men of rape.

The jury took less than 30 minutes to convict 38-year-old Sara Ylen after a three-day trial in St. Clair County, 60 miles northeast of Detroit.

Ylen was charged with making up a story about two men attacking her in her Lexington home in 2012. Ylen was also convicted of tampering with evidence after police said she used makeup to create what looked like bruises. She did not testify in her own defense.

Ylen’s story resembled a “cheap novel,” prosecutor Suzette Samuels told jurors. “She’s lying through her teeth. … This was unreal,” Samuels said.

Yesterday Jennifer Fox claimed (first on this blog and then to The Stranger) that she miscarried her fetus, three months into her pregnancy, five days after police pepper sprayed her at an Occupy Seattle protest. I repeatedly asked if she could provide any medical records to back up her claim—a claim that doctors at Harborview Medical Center said her clash with police caused the miscarriage—but she said she would be in touch with a case worker. Lacking a way to verify her claim (except asking for her records) I said I would follow up.

So I tracked Fox down today at the Occupy Seattle encampment at Seattle Central Community College. Had she contacted anyone at the hospital? “I can’t go to the hospital until Sunday or Monday,” she said. Fox said that she’s having a memorial service for her miscarried baby and one of her fellow occupiers is planning a candlelight vigil, which will consume her time until next week. Can’t she get away to the hospital for an hour? “No.” I provided Fox a copy of a records release for the hospital, which she put into her coat, but again Fox said she couldn’t go request her records until next week. I offered her a ride to and from the hospital, but she again refused. I explained to Fox that, lacking any evidence of her claim, her story was increasingly subject to scrutiny.

"Jennifer has a tendency to exaggerate," her former foster parent Lark Stebbins told KIRO’s Dori Monson this week. "Jennifer doesn't understand the ramifications of allegations towards people, and that's my concern with this possible lawsuit against the Seattle Police Department."

Lark told Monson that when Fox called the night she was pepper sprayed she didn’t mention having a bike thrown at her, didn’t mention that she was pregnant, and didn’t say she was kicked in the stomach.

I think I'm missing something here. If she's a compulsive liar doesn't that mean that to some significant extent she can't control the lies she tells?

Most of you guys aren't going as far as saying she deserves a public lynching (because you're sane), but wouldn't a lack of control absolve her of being a "piece of scum?"

I'm not necessarily calling anyone out here, I genuinely don't know the extent to which compulsive liars can be blamed for their actions.
 
I've known two people like this. One has serious issues with lying. Im not friends with either of them mainly because I could smell their BS a mile away but weve had a lot of mutual friends in common. At first he would lie about stupid shit such as being born and raised in Georgia for 10 years when he lived in the same town his entire life or would tell the local high school that he made American Idol. Then it became more severe. He completely made up things on his resume and essentially copied other people's resumes. He was a teacher's assistant at a school for a while until they found out he lied about going to college or any or his experience in the field. Then he got hired as a wide receiver coach for university of st. Francis because he completely made up his resume and I believe put some of his friends as proffesional contacts and his friends would lie for him. The school eventually found out it was all bullshit and fired him. I'm not sure what has happened to him since.
 
Rofl I just knew about this, those are some epic lies there. Thankfully I missed the GAF thread before we knew she lie. I'm guessing it got ugly.
 
Wow, she has a wild imagination to come up with being the sole survivor in her platoon. That one could easily be exposed for being a lie.

That's taking it to another level damn.

I wonder how fast someone can get caught up in some crazy web of lies? You start off with one and then it just snowballs.

We had a friend in our crew who was like this, a compulsive liar. Lied about money, exaggerated stories. Once, he got caught in a funny way. He used to live next to an air field and my buddy who lived near him gave him a call and asked him what he was doing, he said he was out of town with his gf (we figured it was a lie). As he was finishing his sentence a plane flies over them and my friend said he heard it first then heard it from the other guys phone! He hung up the phone right away.

There was another one at school who lied constantly as well. About all sorts of things. He would say that he got high all the time so we asked him "did you see the dragon when you got high?" And after a bit of this he said "yeah man, I saw it!" Also said he could play any song on the guitar so finally my friend got fed up and brought up his acoustic guitar, put it on his lap and said "here, play something". He said he needed a tab book, my friend whips out a Beatles tab book and hands it to him. He got nervous and broke a string trying to tune it.

Exactly. This is just going to make it harder for actual victims of bigotry in the future.
